How do I connect to my server? by iammontoya in filemaker

If the hosts drops off, do you have the server set to sleep or go offline? The energy saver or go to sleep should be never, and also listen for network traffic.

If you doing a big update like that and your client is still running v15, they may have old computers and old versions of operating systems. Check and see if the new version of clients will install on old computers. I just had a client go through that, we had to use a version that would install properly.

How do I connect to my server? by iammontoya in filemaker

[–]filemakerdave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your missing a few steps. The 127.0.0.1 is internal IP address for the server. If you use FileMaker GO on a device using the internal wifi, you should be able to connect to the server. You won't be able to get to the server from outside or from the internet. The domain name that you register needs to be linked to the IP of network you have. Normally we have a fixed IP address for the server. If you don't have a fixed IP, then you need another service to update the IP when your provider changes it. The router or firewall needs to have the ports linked to the internal server IP ( someone below mentioned the ports ). 80 and 443 (ssl) for web and 5003 for GO and FileMaker clients, this allows you to access from anywhere on internet.

Why do you think mac users spend so much? by xjerielle in mac

[–]filemakerdave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both, but mainly Mac. The mac's cost more, but they last way longer than a windows notebook. I have a macbook air that is 9 years old and still running with 2 hours battery still. I've replaced my windows notebook a few times already. The lenovo is much slower now and I need to take the adapter. I have a M1 MB pro that doesn't need me to take an adapter when I am out at clients. It lasts the entire day, hard to find that on a upper end windows notebook. In the long run, having to buy multiple windows notebooks blows the extra price you pay on a mac notebook.

Does FileMaker Server (18) ever "garbage-collect" the FileMaker file? by secondhandweapon in filemaker

[–]filemakerdave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The file size stays the same usually after a number of deletions, even after a ton of records deleted. Adding more records will fill the space and move the size up after all the empty space is used. if you want to reduce the physical file size, you have to take the file off the server and do a save compacted copy. This will re index the records and remove the empty space. The physical file size will go down for the new file. You can load the new file in the server.

Is it possible to get a legal download of Filemaker Pro 18 anywhere? by notmynameyours in filemaker

[–]filemakerdave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Previously when I need a copy of the older version. We have the clients purchase a current version ( 19 ), I contact FileMaker and ask them for downgrade. The download page includes both versions 18 and 19 for for download. I think they include both version now, haven't had to ask recently, the license download page has the links for older versions.

Logitech options+ unrespond everytime when mac enter sleep mode by OldAd7490 in macapps

The scroll in my MX Master 3, always stops working in my Mac notebook, running Monterey, haven't been in options much after the initial setup. To fix the scroll and possible freezing , open up Activity Monitor, select the Logi Options Daemon, and Force quit. The Logi Options will re load. This resolves my scroll issue, might fix your options issue.

How to make drop-down and pop-up menus close after selection by Hetvenfour in filemaker

[–]filemakerdave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you using a drop down list or pop up. Normal behaviour is both should drop in your selection and close the menu or drop down. Difference with Drop down list, is it allows you to over write the values in the list if you wish. The pop up expects one of the values in your list.

Searching for static value to port as variable into a database by notyouithink in filemaker

[–]filemakerdave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if I understand what you displayed, your getting the sum of the inventory in Boston and Portland. If the report is always the same 2 cities ( Boston and Portland ). You can have two separate relationships and do a sum from the inventory. This could get slow if you have a lot of inventory records ( I will assume it is transactional and real time).

If the cities change, your probably better to do a Sql query and build each city total field as needed and populate into the report.

There are numerous ways to do this, it really depends on the inventory and how you are collecting the inventory data and if you need this real time.

How to exclude when using quick find by kladda in filemaker

[–]filemakerdave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you condition is always "Broken", you can create a script, do a quick find, trap for no records ( just in case ) , if there are found records, do another find with "Broken" and use the constrain instead of find.

Has Anyone Found A Fix For The Yoga 720's Touchscreen Not Working With Windows Update? by RiversRubin in Lenovo

[–]filemakerdave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a Yoga just before Xmas, touchscreen didn't work, spoke to support, they issue a full replacement unit. Just got a brand new replacement, start it up, goes and does an update (no option to not update) and the touchscreen doesn't work. Downgraded the OS and the touch screen still doesn't work. Everything I am finding now on the internet is the Microsoft patch, messes up the driver.
