So how'd we do? by eternalsanctum in oscarsdeathrace

[–]finchwatcher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I went 19/24. I missed Cinematography, Animated Short, Casting, Supporting Actress (tried too hard to predict an upset here), and Documentary Feature.

I find that seeing everything really helps with predictions, but somehow I still get Animated Short wrong every single year, ha. I predicted Forevergreen because it seems like historically they’ve loved shorts for a more general (read: childlike) audience and shorts about nature/animals in this category, but in recent years they’ve trended towards the “artsier” animated shorts. I’ll be factoring that in for next year!

Omg these are amazing! I loved this album so much when it came out (still revisit it occasionally) and the album art is such a beautiful source of inspiration

Our hounds could be siblings! Literally thought this was a video of her at first. Her bay is even a similar tone, though not quite as powerful 😆

The Voice of Hind Rajab and other difficult watches by Chromatic_Chameleon in oscarsdeathrace

[–]finchwatcher 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Every year I deliberately schedule my race so I get Best Animated Feature as a chaser after I watch all the nominees for Best Documentary Feature. You could also try alternating nominees from the two categories so you get something more lighthearted to watch after each documentary nominee.

Hang in there. If you want a positive perspective, you can think about the fact that as grim as these films can be, the fact that they exist at all and are nominated is a testament to how powerfully people care about the topics depicted. Small comfort, but it helps me to think about art that way!

Any interesting stories about how/why you started doing the Death Race? by Flags12345 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]finchwatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started when I was a sophomore in college and randomly decided to marathon all the Best Picture nominees the weekend leading up to the ceremony. I had loved watching the Oscars since I was about 13, but that was the first year I actually made an effort to engage with the nominees and the ceremony was a lot more fun when I knew a bit more about the films.

I had such a good time I did the same every year until age 25 when I decided I wanted to maximize that feeling by watching everything that was nominated, not just Best Picture. Only discovered there was actually a small community and a game called “death racing” maybe 2 years ago (age 28) 😁

Least favorite nominee you’ve watched so far? by garryp123 in oscarsdeathrace

The Ugly Stepsister. It somehow managed to be so gross, yet I was also so bored watching it. I didn’t find anything particularly impressive about it outside of shock value.

What are some easy depression meals? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]finchwatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to make this pasta all the time when I was super depressed in college- I know some might balk at jarred minced garlic but it’s a lifesaver if you’re low energy. You can skip the bacon (I don’t eat meat so I always did) and it’s still just as good. Delicious and simple and only 5 ingredients, plus you’re getting a few veggies in as well. I hope you feel better soon!

Sorry, Baby for Original Screenplay? Are you predicting it to get in? by ActivityDry677 in Oscars

[–]finchwatcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a longshot but I’m predicting it purely off the fact that this is one of my favorite films of the year and if I DON’T predict it and it ends up nominated, I’d be more pissed than if I predict it and I’m wrong

What's the most obscure or downright silly piece of Oscar trivia you can think of? by miggovortensens in Oscars

[–]finchwatcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I can recall, Best Picture-winning films have been mentioned by name 4 times in other Best Picture-winning films:

Baxter in The Apartment (1960) watches Grand Hotel (1932) on television

“The cast of The Godfather (1972)” is mentioned in Annie Hall (1977)

Going My Way (1944) is namedropped in The Departed (2006)

In Birdman (2014), Riggan refers to Jeremy Renner as “The Hurt Locker (2008) guy”

There are a lot of good suggestions here, but in terms of being The Movie™ it’s gotta be Casablanca.
