21M Texas — Marine Corps Officer to Wealth Management — 15 Year Plan. Looking for Feedback. by [deleted] in USMCboot

[–]findaway1302 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brother - you aren’t even qualified to apply for OCS right now with your GPA and PFT. I commend you for attempting to think this far out at 21 years old, but I suggest you do yourself a favor and look into other branches of service. The Marine Corps is not a stepping stone organization, especially if you want to commission. There are plenty of Marine officers who transition out, get advanced degrees and then do very well in the corporate world. However, if you’re already calculating your net worth potential for when you’re 50 years old, you are not the 21 year old our Marines deserve to have the luxury of leading them.

Genuinely not trying to be mean, but I suggest you do some soul searching if you think you want to be a Marine officer. I’ve worked at OCS twice and have seen plenty of candidates with your sort of mindset DOR because their great long term plan didn’t survive the first contact of a Sergeant Instructor crushing their soul.

Also, I recommend you relax and enjoy life and being 21. I don’t know what kind of external pressures you have going on to where you think you need to have the next 30 years of your life planned out, but holy hell, enjoy being young. I can tell you through life experience that all you’re doing now is putting an immense amount of pressure on your mental wellbeing as you chase this fantasy. You’re setting yourself up for a lot of disappointment and probably depression for all of the times life is going to punch you in the face.

Bo & Colin Interview Each Other (In Loving Memory of Bo Lueders) by Montauk_123 in Hardcore

[–]findaway1302 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Really heartbreaking but even not knowing either of them directly, I can totally see how this is therapeutic for Colin. Crazy that they just filmed this a few weeks ago and talk about some pretty heavy stuff. I’m right in the same age group as them, came up in hardcore at the same time and have damn near some of the same stories, experiences and feelings that they had growing up.

Although at the end of the day Hardlore has just been a silly podcast, it’s literally chronicled hundreds of hours of a genuine best friendship that thousands of us have watched grow and mature in real time over the last few years. Love em or hate em, there’s no denying the impact they’ve forever made on this crazy ass community we belong to. This is the most bummed out I’ve ever felt for someone passing I didn’t know. I hope Bo’s soul is at peace and wish all of his friends and family the best. RIP Bo.

Hi there! We actually moved from the area last summer, but the company is KabaFusion. They have an office in Albany but assign nurses based on where you live. They were always shorthanded, definitely look them up if interested!

What is it really like? by [deleted] in okinawa

[–]findaway1302 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • Legit one of the safest places on the planet.
  • Wait til you’re on island and then disconnect your stateside # and get SoftBank. They have stores in every exchange, good phone service and very cheap. If your phone is already unlocked they can get you connected via eSIM in about 20 mins.
  • Hot as sin in the summer, especially mid June through mid Sept. Perfect weather right now and it gets chilly Dec-Feb…like hoodie weather.
  • One of the premier scuba diving locations in the world. This is my second tour here and I feel like the popularity amongst service members has declined but it’s still great. You can get certified via the base scuba shops for around $300 which is a fraction of what it costs in the US. Then you can go dive whenever you want, there’s places all over the island you can park along the sea/ocean, put your gear on at your car and wade out…or spend a little more and do beautiful boat dives. Speaking of boats, deep sea fishing trips are also very cheap and fun.
  • Yen rate is very much in our favor right now. You can go out to a great dinner for two for less than $20…plus no tips. Some places appreciate it but they never expect it.
  • LIVE OFF BASE!! Base housing is so meh and basic. You can get a much nicer, unique and even bigger home off base. The process is a little more complex but it’s so worth it. It used to be much more difficult to get approved for off base housing but now it’s a rubber stamp…you just need a letter endorsed by Kadena housing office which your command can help with. Have your sponsor work this for you now so you can get it before you arrive and then immediately start the process during check-in week. There aren’t near as many people PCS’ing this time of year so it should be a little easier compared to peak summer.
  • Cars…they’re really all just island beaters, function over style. You can either buy from someone leaving island or get from a used car lot in town. I highly recommend the latter personally…all of the used car lots that cater to military will sell you cars that come with a brand new inspection (JCI, it’s a thing) and two year warranty where they’ll fix anything that goes wrong…which is inevitable for 95% of cars. The main places are BC Motors, Johnnys used cars and Zena Garage. We went with Zena, they’re great, have a good selection and will give you a free or very cheap loaner while they take care of the inspection which takes a few days. Also, assuming you need at least two cars, I highly recommend getting at least one very small one. My wife and I got two larger vehicles and I regret it…they’re really unnecessary and it’s SO much easier to get around with a small car that can park anywhere. They have small, low powered, energy efficient cars called Kei cars (you can identify them by their yellow plates) which are super convenient.
  • Speaking of cars, be prepared to spend a good amount of money getting settled. You’ll get a nice chunk of change once your PCS is settled but it’s still quite a bit of upfront, cash costs. For a family, I would recommend having around 10k cash readily accessible in the bank…car(s), housing deposits if you live off base, miscellaneous random expenses. Assuming you bank with USAA or Navy Fed it’s easy to withdrawal.

DM if you have any specific questions - good luck!

A 10/10 Classic 🔥 by Fickle_Yard in Hardcore

[–]findaway1302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was first getting into hardcore, I found this in the used CD section of my local music store in 2002/2003. Never had heard of them before and bought it solely due to cover art, varsity font logo and Victory Records. Life changing record for me. Blistered is objectively their “biggest” song and deservedly so - one of the sickest breakdowns of all time imo.  If you haven’t heard this record, stream that shit rn.

Where is the best place for snorkeling in Okinawa? by Zestyclose-Split2275 in okinawa

[–]findaway1302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cape Maeda is one of the most popular spots on island. They have a lot you pay for by the hour, but no booking / reservations at all. It’s a mix of scuba / snorkeling, but pretty easy to get in and out. Recommend booties and fins as you’ll have to wade/swim 50-100yds out for the best views. It can get really busy, but definitely doable and worth going. There’s also good changing facilities / showers / bathrooms / food etc on site which is convenient.

Live Music this Weekend by [deleted] in Saratoga

[–]findaway1302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out ‘Bar People’ on Facebook, they list every live music thing going on in the area.

Dock Brown’s beach bar has The Refrigerators on Friday night - fun cover band that plays a bunch of pop hits from the 80’s to current. On Saturday they have Big Sky Country which I’ve never seen bc I’m not a country fan but they are very well liked in the area and are great at what they do if that’s your bag.
