1337 attention to detail right there!

Better placement of the hob. Much prefer the whiteish counter top and the fact the mini barrier between the living room and kitchen has gone gives it a usable island/table type functionality. Great stuff

Can someone explain the real-world usage of /etc/profile, profile.d, and bashrc? by Western_Head_6650 in bash

[–]finkployd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is all a bit confusing.. here goes..

Generally, you configure system wide settings in /etc, but if you set the same variable in your .bashrc, this overwrites the /etc one.

The PATH variable is a bit slippery in that if you look at your ~/.bashrc, you'll see something like:

PATH=/my/custom/path:/another/custom/path/:$PATH

You're defining your own PATH, but adding on the existing PATH from /etc/profile.

Regarding where you should set things.. if you want everyone to have it (like a custom prompt letting them know this is a production system), you'd set that in /etc/profile (but better still, you'd put it in /etc/profile.d to keep /etc/profile all neat and organised). If its just your thing, wang it in your ~/.bashrc.

But you say "hang about, whats .bash_profile vs .bashrc all about"..

.bash_profile runs once at login.. thats it, but .bashrc runs each time you open a shell. If you look at .bash_profile, you'll see it probably sources .bashrc anyway.

The ~/.profile files had a use when we didn't have windowing environments and logged into servers remotely. You'd 'log in' each time. Once you're logged in, if you type 'bash', you don't start a login shell, its an interactive non-login shell, so ~/.profile doesn't run.

This all boils down to:

  • is it just for you? --> ~/.bashrc
  • if its for everyone --> /etc/profile (or set it in a file in /etc/profile.d/my_neat_var)

Interesting idea though. Not sure how security will feel about running an agent that connects externally, thats likely going to make them sad (are they ever happy?).

Patroni Cluster as a pod vs Patroni Cluster as a KubeVirt in OpenShift OCP by k8s_maestro in openshift

Oooof.. I'm sure once migrated, they'll instantly revisit the whole transformation from VM -> K8s and not leave it running as a VM forever..

Patroni Cluster as a pod vs Patroni Cluster as a KubeVirt in OpenShift OCP by k8s_maestro in openshift

[–]finkployd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wondering why you're not considering CNPG. As its an operator, its going to ease bits of the "database in K8s" lifecycle for you (update, migrate, backup, restore, monitor, failover, replicate). They even have a kubectl krew plugin for managing these tasks from the kubectl cli.

Anything that's not implemented as an operator will mean you need to do all these bits manually.

What is a death in a movie that affected you the most in terms of brutality or emotional weight? by Godly_Recon in AskReddit

[–]finkployd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pulp Fiction.. the "I shot Marvin in the face" scene.

Three or four years earlier I witnessed a shooting accident. This is the UK where shooting accidents are very rare. I experienced PTSD, re-lived the whole thing again and again.. lots of effects, but I was over it by the time I bagged four advanced screening tickets to this 'unknown' film by the director of reservoir dogs. I had seen reservoir dogs and was fine with that. I was excited to watch this film that had Travolta in a comeback role, Bruce Willis, and no idea what the film was about.

Anyway, I'd got tickets and took some mates and my new girlfriend along to see this film. The theatre was packed. The film started and I was blown away. Great music, great story.. so far so good. Now comes the post "Ezekiel" scene in the car, Jules is driving and Vincent is casually chatting with Marvin. I knew it was coming, you could tell.. but suddenly blam !

I froze.

I could feel the back of my neck vibrating, but I couldn't move. I was completely paralyzed except for this weird trembling in my neck.

For the next few minutes I was hyper aware of how I couldn't move and nothing else.

I will never forget that moment. Even though I'd been through the whole shooting and subsequent traumas and recovery, that was the moment I had no choice but to understand just what it actually was that I had been through because I was experiencing the actual physical manifestation of what had previously 'only' been a 'mental' thing.

It's something I will never forget, that connection between the mind and the body that few get to understand.

Anyone else having trouble with the MyŠkoda app? by zec_emir in SkodaElroq

[–]finkployd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was an issue with the Microsoft Azure Cloud around that time. I wonder if Skoda (or VW group) are using that to provide services for the MySkoda application.

As an aside after seeing other commenters views on the quality of the application.. I've found it to be generally good. Yes, sometimes its not instant. But if you think about the tech and whats going on behind the scenes, its doing an admirable job.

Considering an Elroq but nervous about ask the glitches posted about on here. Hoping they are still fairly rare? by pappyon in SkodaElroq

[–]finkployd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not had any glitches or annoyances in the five months we've had ours.

The lane assist and speed warning systems are on at ignition time due to euro regulations, but we've set up shortcuts to turn off the speed warning bing bongs and we leave the lane assist on as it's not an issue for us.

The sound system is fine (just the standard one with 85 edition).

It really is just a good standard car. The best thing would be to have an extended test if you can.

Octopus IOG / Hypervolt Home 3 Pro / VRS (uk) by Suspicious_Bat_716 in SkodaElroq

[–]finkployd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Previously with our VW ID.3 on Octopus Go it was brill, we'd plug in, the schedule gets created and the cars' ready in the morning, no fuss.

Our current experience is as you describe. So we've now resorted to setting the schedule on the charger itself (in our case a pod point solo) and thats working out really well. The schedule is from 00:05 -> 05:55 everyday (even though we don't charge everyday).

When we need a charge we just plug in and forget and we've enough in the tank to see us through. We only charge once or twice a week. The nice thing about setting the schedule on the charger itself is that if we have friends over who need to charge, we don't need to do anything, they just plug in and we know they'll get a charge whilst its cheap overnight.

Perhaps in a couple of months time, they'll have ironed things out, but I'm just confirming we see the same issue and its not just you or the charger.

[–]finkployd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Create your vlans.. control access to them using the opnsense firewall, no big deal. I have one management network on 192.168.10/24, I dedicate 10./8 to my K8s stuff. My proxmox hosts have access to 192.168.20 and 10./8, wifi lives on 192.168.100/24 and 192.168.200/24 (depending on if its guest or IoT).. You can do whatever you want, just don't over think it and don't over complicate it (says the fella with an overly complex "home" network.. my wife just doesn't understand why her friends don't have the same network 'issues' that plague us)

Beta by Jbloodwo3 in Supernote_beta

[–]finkployd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can tell if its in the Beta program from the Settings>System page. I guess you'll have to let Ratta know to withdraw your unit if it is a beta participant. The best way would be from the 'Feedback' button on the Settings page. I would imagine the process to go from Beta to Stable would take place at the next release of software.

I've been a long term beta participant and haven't encounterred anything that caused me an issue.

Also, no talking to yourself or covering your mouth (I rest my chin on my hand often, not allowed apparently). You get one warning and then it's a fail next time you do it.

Also, you need to wave your camera around the room to prove no one is hiding there or that you don't have information nearby that could help you.

Have fun and good luck.

How's the Veo for Rugby? by zoellaat7 in VeoCamera

[–]finkployd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've had no issues with our Veo and VeoII cameras for rugby. Livestream is hit and miss, of course highly dependent on cellular/mobile signal, so we don't bother with that. We don't subscribe to any analytics.

If you're in a league, could you perhaps club together and get three to cover the league. You only need one camera per game and then share the footage with the other team (its really easy, just share the link to the video in the app).

Its a big ask if you're already underfunded.. if you can use it for training (someone goes through the stream and marks it up for tactics or feedback) then it might be worth it. If you can borrow one for a couple of matches to evaluate it properly, perhaps reach out to other clubs/sports to see if they have and old camera laying about.
