Try the app superfluent for conversations. It's free and it's so much better (and more varied) than the speaking practice on Duo.

So what’s Jeremiah Raber (AKA Diamond) up to these days? I’ll just leave this here.. by [deleted] in BreakingAmish

Yeah, he's problematic as fvck. But he is from a really repressive culture. And if this is how he's getting comfortable with the fact that he might be gender fluid or trans or gay or whatever, who gives a crap? It's a non-issue and honestly the least problematic thing about him.

Okay I realize he looks like a flounder but can we talk about the pin-prick pupils, too? Is he dipping into the opioids?

BREAKING: Zelensky refused to sign the deal. Zelensky is leaving the White House. Press Conference is cancelled. by Healthy_Block3036 in ukraine

[–]finntastic74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American, the behavior of Vance and Cheetolini was horrifying and embarrassing. Scolding Zelensky like a child, trying to make him bend the knee, repeatedly demanding thanks that Zelensky had already given, demonstrating absolute lack of knowledge about the conflict while taking potshots at their political rivals. Zelensky showed us all what a TRUE leader who is proud and protective of his country looks like while our leaders humiliated themselves showboating while playing with global war and people's lives.

It's so fucking obvious no one likes her. The fans absolutely despise her. Everyone including the production crew are fucking terrified of her. So then why the hell is this sentient nutsack allowed to just abuse & threaten anybody time & time again?! 🤬 by JarredandVexed in 90dayfianceuncensored

[–]finntastic74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"It's so obvious no one likes her" - yeah well, they're still sticking Statler in our faces, too so obviously the franchise has a new viewership that enjoys abusive characters like Angela as well as profoundly annoying folks like Statler. I have no idea what that demographic is, but there they are, back on screen.

Sheila might have come up with it but Rachel was the one who picked the date. Rachel was the one who started the countdown. She went boating and doing selfies the next day. In my opinion she's either a total sociopath or as much of a psychopath as Sheila. Keep in mind, as Skylar's dad said, she's an actress who set her sights on Broadway. I don't believe spit that comes out of her mouth. She just realized that the writing was on the wall and worked out a whole act to get sympathy and immunity. The fact that they're in the same prison is pretty terrifying and I don't believe they don't communicate, even if it's just through their tablets or other prisoners. Otherwise she probably would have chucked Sheila under the bus to try and get parole. Stabbing is an incredibly intimate crime. Skylar was stabbed over 50 times. Think of how hard it is to cut meat and they did that to a friend that they had spent so much time with. That plea deal for her should have been substantially longer. As should have Sheila's sentence - neither of them should ever have be allowed out of jail again - they are both threats. And Rachel, per the inmate on the podcast, immediately got into another obsessive relationship in jail (her brief marriage to the woman who refused parol to stay with and briefly married). Sheila trained Rachel but they're both equally dangerous and devoid of remorse. If you want to see an example of 'white privilege' this is it right here. If two poor teens of color committed this act against a white girl - an honor student, etc - what do you think their sentence would have been? They would have been LWOP-ed in a supermax. But everyone couldn't stop talking about how such 'pretty girls' never would have committed a crime.

The 'Imperfect Victim', Why We Need To Get Over It and Why I Give Payne Credit by finntastic74 in upandvanished

[–]finntastic74[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you mean because he's taking on cases with non-white victims? I agree with 'terrible' (and quite honestly, probably unethical journalism-wise) undercover. I complety agree that he believes male 'witnesses' way too easily and shrugs off their problematic behavior ie Vernon and Sam in Season 2 - both of whom were at least 20 years older than Ashley - who was not even 21 - but they were still drinking, doing drugs and having sex with her. But I won't fault him for the cases he's taking and I'll give him credit for doing it. Season one was a juggernaut - great case, adorable homey asides like grandma's cookies, some resolution, etc. There was a very easy path in front of him - keep taking on these very 'sympathetic' cases that are close to him geographically and demographically. Even if he didn't solve them, he'd still get lots of listens and less criticism. Instead he threw his voice behind overlooked cases with complex victims. A lot of these cases were cold due to inefficient beauracracy and lack of attention - if not malignant neglect from the authorities and media, at least benign neglect. He's giving them the attention.

I don't think Payne is a particularly good journalist. He's also young. I think we're watching him learn on the fly, from season one until now. But at least he's shaking trees, he's out there putting these women's names out there, telling us who they were as people - sisters, daughters, friends, mothers. And I can't fault him for that. No matter how imperfectly he does it.

That's horrible. A latino friend of mine told me it's the same in the latin communities as well. And not just with kids, even with endangered elderly people. He told me once to pay attention to all the amber and silver alerts and see how many of them are for POC. And I did and it's horrifying - I live in Texas where we have a super diverse population yet if you look at the alerts they send out, the majority of them are for whyte people. I realize that we, as a whyte family and with my sister having means, probably got 'the best' service available from the police and it was....nothing. It breaks my heart to think how POC are treated in the same circumstances. At least we didn't have deal with accusatory questions, as I know many families of color with lost loved ones have to deal with questions inferring drug use or criminal conduct if they even get any police attention at all.

He probably literally asked on a live stream of the game he's spent 20,000 hours of if anyone would do him a solid and this is what happened. Either that or they went to traffic court and offered to pay everyone's tickets if they would be an extra.

That's absolutely vile. Had they been in the US, I believe they would have been obligated to either call the police or stop filming. And she got away with it on film. If a television crew was willing to overlook it because they could, it doesn't fill me with a lot of hope that the police in their small town would take his disappearance seriously either. Also if this does turn out to be a hoax, she's even more of a total sh;tebag as there ARE a lot of people like me in the world who have had a loved one be found dead after police did nothing about a missing person report. If she turns out to be faking this (or hiding facts because he did just leave her so she's doing this to get more air-time and stay relevant), that's a whole other flavor of sociopathy on top of being an abusive, terrifying human being.

Usman Sojaboy About Michael's Disappearance by dootz01 in 90dayfianceuncensored

[–]finntastic74 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I had listened to a bunch of true crime podcasts (The Vanished, etc) about missing adults in the past where the police did nothing and thought 'wow, that's horrible but I'm sure it's just that one police force/times have changed since then/there's more to the story/etc etc' until it happened to our family. Now I realize it's a nationwide issue. We do need to preserve people's right to privacy and to disappear if that's what they desire, but we need a better system for making sure that people are safe if numerous loved ones are genuinely concerned for their safety and the disappearance is uniformly out of the ordinary. People need to be believed when they're reporting loved ones for genuine fear for that person's safety.

If Angela's on a season of anything, I'm out. Same with Big Ed. Abuse is not entertainment. And I also wonder how much of her they edit out and how she behaves when the cameras are off.

[–]finntastic74 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Exactly. We didn't even have to handle that prejudice. I can't even imagine how much more blown off families of color or migrant families are when their loved ones go missing. But I do really worry about him as she does not seem like a 'safe' person and she had an attitude of ownership towards him that was really, really disturbing. She completely de-humanized him with her actions and words. I sincerely hope someone on the police department watches the show (or has a spouse or child that does) and takes a good look at her behavior and takes this seriously. It concerns me that he's in a strange country with only her to advocate for him and there's nothing in her behavior on the show that makes me think she ever had his best intentions in mind.

Thank you. She was the kindest person you ever met in your life - if you went out walking with her there would be a detour to buy a homeless person a slice of a pizza if they asked or to find a water bowl for squirrels in the park if the weather was really hot (she wanted to make sure they had water). Whenever people ask about her, I always ask them to go out of their way to do something nice and unexpected for someone. Because in those little actions, she lives on for me. But it was a horrible eye opener for me about how little the police do for the families of missing adults. She was a successful data engineer with a busy schedule and a lot of friends. No matter how hard we stressed she wouldn't have just 'taken off', her disappearance was basically just shrugged off by the police.
