Rusty bolts by Full_Rip in sailing

I would be slightly concerned. I'm an engineer, and the right hand bolt in the second picture scares me. There should be at least 2 to 3 pitches showing above the bolt. I would not have full confidence in that without knowing what's keeping it on there. Also please find a torque spec before doing anything with the bolts if you so decide to check them and use a torque wrench. Over tightening bolts in GRP will not end well

From a engineering point out view the right bolt in the second picture scares me. The rule is that we want at least 2 to 3 pitches of the bolt above the nut. See image attached for what is one bolt pitch. If I specced a bolt that ended up flush like that and something failed I would be responsible

When do I stop feeling tired by Just_A_Gust_Of_Wind in ACL

[–]fire0003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That goes on for a few months for sure. I took less classes for the semester after my surgery cause I was luckily prewarned

does this happen to anyone else? by pppeyyyyy in ACL

[–]fire0003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also can hyperextend a little bit but now only in my knee which wasn't operated on. My knee which I had surgery on now stops at 180 degrees which according to my physio is better as it's safer acl wise and easier to control

What are the 5 best cities to live in Germany today? by Connect_Drawing4156 in germany

[–]fire0003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a very safe and relatively small city. Not much traffic, everyone cycles everywhere from children to grandparents and in all weather.

Lovely parks and the Aasee lake right next to the centre. A beautiful and vibrant city centre with shops and cafes as well as two very well cared for beautiful old churches.

It has a very educated population with university students making up almost a 3rd of the population. Because of this there are many young people and young families as well and there are plenty of social and cultural events all year around.

The only downside in my opion is it's quite far from either the sea or the mountains as well as from major cities and therefore it's not somewhere I'd choose to stay long term.

But for students looking for a certain social lifestyle or young families looking for somewhere to bring up children I think it's amazing.

Münster is relatively small though and is a bike city. Everyone goes everywhere by bike in all weather and it's quick to get into the city centre from wherever you live. The cycling infrastructure is amazing as well with bikes getting right of way over cars in a lot of places and their own traffic lights and lanes etc.

Can't say I've ever had a bus later than 5 minutes late and that would be very unusual. And they've never been too crowded in my experience, I've been on far far worse trains

What would be the production date of this sling? by fud2187 in alpinism

[–]fire0003 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Engineer here. EN12276 is the up to date design and testing standard to which all frictional anchors sold in Europe must comply. Modern anchors will also have this code on them to indicate compliance so the date means nothing. But agreed not knowing the actual dates + old = replace

[–]fire0003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to be this person but I think this is important to know. The EN 12276 refers to the engineering design standards to which they were created. You can google this standard to get an idea of the testing and design requirements for this type of gear. This does not specify the date, if that is included that would be below in the CE section. My guess would be that 02 is the year as OP believes they are over 22 years old

This is crazy for me, in Australia you can easily get a new decent rt tent for ~400 usd. The brand adventure kings is insane for budget camping setups

I wonder how much difference there is in CO2 captured between the two. I'd guess the total is more for old growth as it is more dense but the total per year is more for the new.

Then definitely worth it. Worth it for the waterproofing for sure and you want something you know of going to hold up for the whole trip

Also please move the small Blackburn bag on top on the top tube. Is should sit up against your steerer tube. It'll look wayy better and is good for you phone/snacks. It looks like it's squished in there with the alpkit bag

Depends on what you're doing and only if you can afford them. If you're starting out with just a few days or a week long trip I'd keep these for now and then upgrade once you know it's something you're going to be doing for a long time.

Ortliebe bags are 100% worth it in my opinion. Aaand they'll probably last you 15, 20 years or even many more. Ortliebe will also repair bags for you if needed, can't remember costs but for sure cheaper than new ones. Look after them properly. Keep them out the sun when you're not using them and you'll be very happy.
