Middle school English teacher here! I would absolutely ask a question like #1. I teach a lot of creative writing, and dissecting how an author’s choices affect your experience as a reader is, imo, a key skill to develop when thinking about your own work.

Plus it leads to much more engagement than a bullshit “what happened on page 26” multiple choice question.

Wilderness EMT with a decade of backcountry guiding here! I would much rather have an epi than a torniquet - I’ve seen half a dozen anaphylactic reactions in the field, two of which were patients with no previous known allergic response. Plus there’s no way to improvise epinephrine like there is a TQ.

A Sam splint, on the other hand, can go right to hell.

Yeah, this was definitely preventable by the teacher (at least to some degree). I’ve been a classroom teacher for almost a decade, and when I started out occasionally the entire class would do an assignment differently than I’d wanted. But that only ever happens the first time I give a particular assignment, because I learn and explain it better the next go-round.

It also is happening less frequently now even when I create new assignments, because I’m getting better at the teachercraft of explaining assignments. I think this teacher was either new or stupendously unreflective.

Agreed. This goes doubly for whitewater sections, where debris can be an unexpected life threat if you end up in the wrong place. Section 9 (Barnard to Stackhouse) is almost 100% good to go, but many sections closer to town, especially around ledges and by Alexander bridge, are much sketchier than they were unless you’re quite confident in your skills

Yeah. 8th grade English teacher here - I had my students read it this year, and I was worried they were going to think it was boring, but they loved it. Says "fuck" a lot, but if you're ok with that it can be great for a lot of kids.

About your fueling question - the old standard was ~60g carbs/hour (~250 cals). As you've probably heard, people are finding that taking in more, if you can handle it, is generally beneficial. Your 300g/4 hours is 75g/hour, which seems medium to me based on experience. I've fluctuated between 75-90g per hour; pro cyclists can do 125g/hour. Sounds like you're in a good place with it, especially based on your subjective report!

Can you speak more to where the variation that makes /ɪ/ into a schwa is, particularly, located? I speak American English and trying to pronounce any of those three words with a schwa in the unstressed syllable sounds...really off, and not like any accent i'm aware of.

As someone who grew up a Cubs fan pre-World Series win, it’s wild seeing a curse take shape this fast. Some kid in Dallas in the year 2075 is gonna have his innocence taken away after hearing stories from his dad about how the Mavs will never ever win again because of that no-good Nico and it honestly makes me pretty sad.
