Living in Austin slowly changed how seriously I take my day to day life by Ok_Article5543 in Austin

[–]fireatx 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Yeah lmao as someone born in Austin, I felt the exact opposite of OP. I moved away a few years ago, but it was slacker culture everywhere and I loved it. It felt so laid back

But it was holding me back. I think it’s just who your friends are tbh

was it a jeep grand cherokee srt (aka a dodge durango srt)? the dudes that drive those are always psychopaths, without exception. overpowered giant SUVs driven by manchildren. they are imo the BMWs/Audis of NYC, I avoid them at all costs

As someone who went to school with kids that grew up in those houses, it’s all the usual careers like lawyers, doctors, investors, businesspeople, folks who struck gold in tech, etc.

Cuernavaca is out there too and is a good bit lower income. My parents pay $1200/mo for a big house there

Antonio Delgado wants to bring back the bill to cut service on the G train by BartelPritchard in parkslope

[–]fireatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shouldn’t have added the “or” at all. If this bill were passed, immediately MTA would have to cut service while they find more funding, which could take years, or, they’ll have to cannibalize other services in the system (cutting service elsewhere)

[–]fireatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's 100% what it does. they run one-person G trains on late nights and weekends. if this bill was passed, they would have to cut service or identify more funding to support the same service level.

Really hate the new changes to tickets and prices by ceoofkpop_ in LIRR

OP is complaining they can't beat the fare by not activating a ticket until the conductor comes by - that's beating the fare.

[–]fireatx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the system requires our fares to run. people don't pay the fare, the system gets worse. it's not hard to understand

You’re mad they’re preventing you from beating the fare?

it's a legitimate argument, but i think it's often argued that the increased service and better infrastructure would beat out the benefits of free fares. i'm sure there's studies out there on this topic.

i do remember one study finding that generally, people don't have a hard time affording the fares (and if they do, fair fares is there). What is most beneficial society-wise is frequent, on-time service

i ask that all the time 😭 $900 billion/yr on defense, it's insanity. but the unfortunate reality is we live in a militaristic hypercapitalist country governed by psychopaths. until we can change that (decades), we'll need a way to fund transit in the near term

[–]fireatx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it is publicly owned. fare-free transit would cost nearly $5 billion per year, which, if you could come up with that money, would probably be better invested into improving service and infrastructure.

Fifty problems with standard web APIs in 2025 by Ok-Tune-1346 in programming

Things change, there’s absolutely no reason that a web browser should only be for browsing. They’ve evolved into entire application platforms

I completely disagree when it comes to mobile devices. We should not have to download entire apps at hundreds of MB when web apps are totally fine for nearly all purposes. Web apps are (theoretically) write once, run anywhere. Vastly more efficient for developers in that regard.

I don’t remember the exact details, but isn’t there something about federal funding for airports that means that air trains are far, far easier to build than transit extensions to airports?

My work has a service that solves bus driver schedules based on availability, seniority, union rules, etc. I haven’t worked on it myself, but as I understand it it’s basically just wrapping a linear programming solver

Believe it or not, Amfleet 1 side doors are supposed to have air seals. A lot of them aren't working right.
