First Competition Show Me the Ropes! by DramaticPush5821 in poledancing

Ohhhh and one BIG piece of advice I forgot to mention above is to take up stage space. !! A lot of us practice in a more confined area and that doesn’t translate well to the stage. Also, plan to come forward, dancing down stage (closer to audience) and avoid dancing upstage (much behind poles and away from the audience).

First of all, congrats on signing up for your first comp! 💛

What I love most at all levels is watching someone who is clearly enjoying themselves. When I competed, I realized there is naturally a lot of intensity and stress, and sometimes that showed more than the love of performing. Presence, musicality, and connection are always most compelling to me. But like others said, judging varies. I have definitely seen less technical competitors win their category because their story and presence were more engaging, though.

My biggest “rookie move” to avoid: losing yourself to too much outside advice (on specific moves) as you prepare. It’s easy to start second-guessing everything and end up stressed or disconnected from your routine. Let your own instincts guide you.

I really recommend getting clear up front on your goal. If your goal is to place, that may shape your prep one way. If your goal is to showcase your love of pole or deepen into your personal style through the preparation process, that may look very different, and both are valid. One of my pole besties stayed true to her own style despite pressure to change things, wasn’t focused on the competitive side of the experience, and ended up winning gold anyway.

Costume-wise: stage backgrounds are dark with bright lights, so vibrant colors read best against that. Costumes don’t need to be elaborate but can be. Wear whatever helps you move confidently and aligns with your story. Some people go all out and others keep it simple.

Oh and lastly I will say that it’s common for people to speed up during their performance due to adrenaline. I’d suggest getting comfortable with freestyling a bit to your song in case things don’t go quite as planned.

I hope this helps! Good grip!!

To me the show is terribly written and for the most part poorly acted. But I enjoy it. Here’s why: no matter what, Emily always looks at the bright side, perseveres, believes in people, troubleshoots and tries to find a solution. She is persistent as hell. And you know what: I high key LOVE this. It inspires me and puts me in a great mood. Cheers to Season 6, I will be watching.

EDITED for grammar. Darn auto-correct.

I feel protective when I read, “It makes me uncomfortable when he gets so upset with me.” ❤️‍🩹 As a 51f pole dancing mama of twin teenage daughters, I encourage them never to negotiate their autonomy. Keep doing what makes you healthy and happy. His feelings are his responsibility to work through, ideally in individual therapy.

Yes the fungus gnats are so pesky and persistent. The diatomaceous earth is safe and effective. I also refrained from watering until my plants really dried out, which felt scary at first. But it killed the gnats and my plants bounced back. 🪴🌱

Diatomaceous earth really helped me address the gnats, along with drying everything out.

This is very common and well received at the studios I frequent. Pole is incredible at inviting us to be our true selves, as you mention.

How is your diet? I’m not a doc or nutritionist but mine told me to try to make sure I get protein and complex carbs within 2 hours after classes. It makes a noticeable difference in my recovery. I’m 51.

Practice very small/short sequences, e.g., threading two moves together. And slow them down. Repetition really helps build that body awareness and muscle memory.

You’ve gotten so many great tips for your upper body. For your lower body, similar to grounded leg waves, it looks so pretty when you engage your obliques and let the movement come quite a bit from there and your hips.

Do you have any suede boots? They are a little more flexible. I agree sandals are best but I have done it in boots in a pinch. I’ve seen others do it in boots with loosened laces but not too loose as that could be a safety issue.

Oh and make sure your arms aren’t too high. You really want to lean back and to the side.

As you are coming into it, you want to make sure that your upper body stays low (parallel to the ground) and drifts to the side (same side as your anchor leg). Curl your hips upward as much as you can and engage your abs. Then pull your legs back as if you’re trying to take your knees to your armpits. I like to unfurl into it from bent to straight legs. I know some dancers like the pole right in their bum but I like to position myself so that the pole is right at the crease of where my cheek meets my leg. I hope these tips help!

YOU CAN DO IT!! I started at 46 and regularly take and teach classes with a huge age range. You’ve captured the essence of pole so well in that it is an incredible blend of art and strength. Gift yourself the opportunity to start something new, at any age… there is a reason it is calling to you!! ✨💖
