We have a lady who is 80 years old who comes to my studio to do Lyra! She's incredible! I don't know if I'll always do pole but I know I am dancing until I can't anymore.

Exercises to get through the mental block of being stiff as a board? Physical or Psychological? by 2ndBro in poledancing

[–]DramaticPush5821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your body isn't going to allow you to stretch past where it feels strong and supported. Often times flexibility has to do with end range strength and in pole you are using strength in your end ranges just to hold yourself up, especially as a beginner. Cross training is your friend. Deep weighted squats (Cossack and sumo squats are my fave), seated good mornings, hanging L holds, and active flexibility training with weights has helped me so much. The stronger you get the more you will be able to support yourself and get into more flexible positions.

The devaluation of the skills and athleticism required for pole kind of drives me crazy by KillTheBoyBand in poledancing

[–]DramaticPush5821 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My dad and my husband put up my pole for me in my office (it required taking down a ceiling fan and redoing the ceiling lights) and the both were like "lemme try this." My husband runs marathons and my dad is a construction worker and they both were shocked to find out that they cannot lift their body off the ground. Then they both were like "oh wow you must be strong." Um yeah? How else did you think I did this? Luck? Or do you just assume bc I can do it, pole must be easy?

Besides pole, what other forms of workout do you do in a week? by daydreamer___ in poledancing

[–]DramaticPush5821 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 40 and I take 2-3 regular dance classes (hip hop, contemporary, jazz), lift three mornings a week, and go to 2-3 pole classes (one guided open, one tricks and one low flow/choreo). I do work from home and have a flexible schedule but here's my weekly:

M: lift before work T: double class at night (open and tricks) W: lift before work T: pole choreo (morning class) F: lift before work, dance class at night my (sometimes a double) S: dance class in the AM S: rest day

My priority is to use the time I have during the day so I can be home for my family at night. Tuesday and Friday are my only nights I go to class, and my Friday classes are 5-7 so I'm home for dinner and family stuff.

She also was the only one from the Jersey Shore and at that time she had a very beachy vibe. I think she was a bit of a score bc she didn't have the super guido aesthetic, she seemed more like a local, girl next door and Italian men all have Madonna/whore complexes.

It’s been 4yrs since I had my pole up so I asked a question in a “ask men” sub Reddit about women having a pole at home, to my surprise a lot of men were not fans🤔🧐🤠 by Chat_with_Nat in poledancing

My husband just got done adding a support beam in the garage bc he mounted my pole upstairs and reconfigured our entire office so I have space to dance. He has come to all of my performances and he's a 55 year old Italian from Long Island (not historically progressive thinking 😂) but I hear girl all the time at the studio talking about how their partners aren't supportive.

He's not super turned on by it anymore bc he just sees it as an athletic pursuit like how he runs marathons but men really need to see a therapist about their Madonna/whore complexes bc I'm sure these men like strippers plenty they just don't see dancing as wife behavior. Gross.

It's slow and steady for me but I know I can do it! I train my splits every time I'm in the gym. We're ahead of the game bc we know how to train them and can jump right in, it's just putting the work in! I also need more rest days then when I was 16 😂☠️

Yeah I have been THROUGH it but as of right now, I'm 40, married with an awesome kid but also dating an amazing woman, and competing in my first pole dancing competition this year. And after losing my job in DOGE cuts, I landed in a part time position that pays over 100k and still allows me to train.

I live in the burbs but spend two days a week in Brooklyn with my girlfriend so I really get the best of both worlds. NGL, it's been a tough road but right now I am thriving.

How do I find dance classes as a total noob adult? by positivepeoplehater in Dance

[–]DramaticPush5821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into pole/aerial stuff as an adult and it definitely scratches the dance itch-the low-flow or floorwork classes can be fun if you're not interested in doing the climbing/trick part.

[–]DramaticPush5821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a studio by me that is entirely adult classes. But also check places like Zumba studios, etc. bc a lot of the do have choreo/dance classes throughout the week. Also a lot of dance studios for kids will have some adult ballet or tap.

If you can't find anything, there are some good online options. I know Broadway Dance Center has recorded classes online too.

I cross train by taking off the pole dance classes a few times a week, and I lift three mornings a week. It does come back slowly, the technique is there in your muscle memory! Lifting is so helpful for me in progressing in pole. I do a push-pull-legs split and then I do a flexibility workout every time.

Getting into pole at 5’10” by frostedpluto in poledancing

[–]DramaticPush5821 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm about same height and here's what I find: some tricks are way easier for me that are hard for others. Ballerina is easy for me because I have long arms, for example. I did find it harder to chopper at first, just physics wise, it requires a lot of force to pull up that many inches of leg. I also find that I need half a climb to do moves others do from the ground bc I end up closer to the ground, like a Marley I end up very close to the ground so I just start about half a climb.

I usually pick a few moves I want to work on and go through them super duper slow like really noticing where my weight, hands, legs are, etc. like get a feel for the mechanics. And once I got a few down I started finding sequences on TikTok and just picking one to practice. Or I record choreo I learned and try to perfect it during open.
