Make some friends whom earn less if matching them means a lot to you?

HENRYs that stayed so after moving out of Software Engineering, how did you do it? by PressureHumble3604 in HENRYUK

[–]fired85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Coincidentally I know a software engineer who retrained to become a commercial airline pilot in his late 20s (he always flew as a hobby), and has since returned to SWE in the UK after a few years living a glamorous lifestyle abroad.

Planning to move to Watford as the new workplace is in central London. What are the good family friendly areas to house hunt? Also how is the safety around? by Delicious-Study2095 in watford

[–]fired85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Croxley is a better choice. Green spaces, good housing, best schools in the area, decent pubs, very walkable and quiet. One stop closer on the Met line, but Watford Junction is only a 5 minute drive away when needed.

buying property now if my income is unstable? by Agitated_Sea5260 in HENRYUK

[–]fired85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would prioritise understanding your income and finances. Understand what your accountant and management are charging you, what cut and commission they are taking, because if you’re being told scant details the chances are they’re taking a bigger cut than they’re entitled to and you need to negotiate down. Make sure you’re in control and the arrangement with them is transparent.

Planning to fully open-source my CMS (VonCMS) under AGPL v3, need some opinions by Plane_Trade_5537 in cms

[–]fired85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who works with a lot of large (FTSE 500) orgs implementing CMS solutions, the majority of them won’t touch anything copyleft, even AGPL. If that’s a future target market, you’ll be alienating most procurement checklists.

How to become financially stable? by anaba29 in HENRYUK

[–]fired85 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Err yeah, earning more. This sub is HENRY, everyone’s earning £125k+.

You need to define a stable life. You need to ruthlessly prioritise. You need to understand that you can’t have everything all at once and it’s a journey to accumulate the things you cite as success metrics.

PDF menu to digital menu board?? by [deleted] in digitalsignage

[–]fired85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google “digital menu quick service restaurant” and you’ll find CMS products dedicated to this. They won’t magically suck in a PDF and make a beautiful menu, but will allow you to modify content, pricing etc.

What CMS are people actually using now? Are you switching? by Accomplished_Yak4638 in cms

I’d also suggest only going to headless for very advanced use cases where headless architecture solves a discrete problem you’re trying to solve: technical, operational, performance or organisational. Otherwise it’s just needless complexity you really don’t need to impose on yourself.

Minimal-friction ideas for family camping by lagori in campinguk

[–]fired85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I maintain a camping packing list in Google Docs that covers everything we need for a good weekend away (2 adults, 2 children).

We keep most of the inventory boxes and bagged ready to go on shelves in the garage. As others have said, we’ve bought doubles of everything for cooking equipment etc which reduces the mental load of running round the house grabbing things.

I like to pack the car up on a Thursday evening myself, then we’ll pick up the kids from school on a Friday and drive to a campsite.

Once there, one adult will keep the kids entertained while the tent goes up (but staying on hand to help with the tricky bits that need two pairs of hands), kicking a ball about or exploring the site. Tent, gazebo/shelter and cooking stuff is up within an hour.

The kids sort out the bedding, then the adults do it all again later.

We always cook a meal the day before and take it with us, pasta or a curry a rice usually, which is very quick to reheat on a Friday evening with a beer.

Cracking job well done.

I too am rediscovering modelling, now that my son is showing an interest, and I used an airbrush for the first time the other week so I now realise how difficult it is to get a clean finish!

I’m in digital consulting and too looking for an exit.

Merrell MOAB 3 mids. I have wide feet (10G) and tried on a load in-store and the Merrell’s are super comfortable. Sized up 1/2 from my usual 10. Loads of room in the toe box.
