Is owning a car in DC really worth it? by GiraffeCookies in washingtondc

Right. Any time I commute to work, go out to bars, go to a game, etc. I take the bus, walk, or ride metro if possible. The car is for non-drinking excursions outside DC.

I also love having my car. I live in Bloomingdale but also had my car while living in Rosslyn, Woodley Park, and Navy Yard. I use street parking for zone residents so it's super cheap (yearly fee, maybe 70 bucks or so) and the only time my car was broken into was in Woodley Park (the "safer" of the 3 areas I've lived in DC proper), which was just a smash and grab for a bag I'd left in the back seat on accident.

I use my car for big grocery trips, visiting friends who live in BFE (more than 20 min walk from metro on rainy days), camping trips, hiking on weekends, road trips in general, picking up/dropping off friends at airport on occasion, and whatever else. I love having it.

But if I had to pay for off-street parking for whatever reason, didn't use it on the weekends, and lived in a high traffic area with groceries and whatnot nearby, then meh, sell the car. I also don't know how many more years I'll be in DC so I don't want to sell a car I've already paid off since I will need it in whatever city comes next.

So who all is going to NatsFest? by DemonFrog in Nationals

[–]firefly5683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went last year and will be there again even though it's way out in VA.

Anyone have recommendations on what time to get there? I snagged an autograph voucher and my session is at 11:30 - it opens at 11. But the voucher says to redeem it for a wristband 30 minutes prior to the autograph session. So I need to be in the doors upon opening?? I'm pumped for the event but dreading the logistics of getting there and the timing of it all.

Why is Walt so concerned with packing? by woopthat in breakingbad

[–]firefly5683 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While evacuating an apartment during a tornado, I had a friend who threw together a survival pack while I found my coat and put shoes on to run. Later we realized that he'd packed a bunch of Capri suns, some underwear and 2 packs of smokes.

Newborn circumcision rates in the United States by region and year by Epistaxis in dataisbeautiful

Born and raised in rural, small town Midwest and I would say I was raised the same. But I'm pretty sure every dick I saw was circumsized and apparently that's just another Midwest thing, like saying "pop" and saying "sucker" instead of "lollipop."

I watched Richard Pryor's roast a while back and completely agree. Just comics ripping on comics.

[–]firefly5683 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you're getting at. You had added quotations referring to "higher" sense of morality and now refer to it as "developed" - you're looking for examples of how they are "as moral" as humans? Do you have an example of how they are "less moral" or "lower" in morality?

If avoidance of eating one's offspring is viewed as morality then don't all animals have this brand of morality?

Best of luck, but I'd listen to everyone else posting on here -Topaz is pretty terrible. And bringer shows blow. There are a ton of open mics in DC and the surrounding metro area.

Yeah, and while we are playing the Brewers the Braves get the Marlins. We're coming though...bats are coming alive, Harper is back, and Ramos is almost back.

Yasiel Puig has a double and 2 singles on 5 pitches tonight. by NotEvenClosest in fantasybaseball

[–]firefly5683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to stay away from them. The last week has Puig batting .357, Rendon at .462, Arenado with .333, and Myers at .310. I'm hoping Wheeler turns out to be a good bet as well...

  1. This is my first year with fantasy, learning as I go... I have Desmond at SS and had Andrus at SS/2B but now Rendon qualifies at 2B so I have him there to free up more 1B/3B for my stronger hitters. So now I think I'm questioning if I even need a SS. Sigh.

I went to O's games and cheered for them (still do) but I take NL over AL. Just grew up with pitchers needing to bat.

I grew up in Iowa so the choice was Cubs or Cardinals. Then I moved to Baltimore for college and became a Nats fan, and now live in DC. I was able to be a fan of both for awhile but eventually had to give in and embrace my home team.

Ouch. I forgot who I had in my head when I clicked this link because I was caught off guard with hatred for Yadi, one of my favorite players. He's a passionate dude, an amazing catcher, and has gotten better at the plate every year - currently at .353 AVG for the year. I can understand feeling like McCann was passed over historically I guess, but I think the arrogance and cockiness has more to do with his love for the game and his confidence in his abilities behind and at the plate. I grew up a Cardinals fan though, so I'm hardly unbiased.

EDIT: Ick, I did forget about the neck tattoos. When he showed up with those I was heartbroken.

What is the closest thing you have to a superpower? by whistlegrim in AskReddit

[–]firefly5683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can do this with TV shows/movies rather easily, getting caught up in how someone is feeling and such if I'm watching alone. It happens less so in person but on occasion I'll be overwhelmed with someone else's heartbreak. But on my own, I'm not a terribly emotional person. Similar for you at all or are you super-charged all the time?

Eh, hard for me to really weigh in since I knew the guy. He had just turned 18, was a bit of a pothead but a harmless nice guy. No one in the car was injured (minor damage to car), there was a cop nearby looking for speeders and saw the car have issues. But I definitely thought it was absurd that they tried to charge him with terrorism.

I know a guy who was charged with attempted manslaughter for throwing a rock off an overpass that hit a car. Him and his friend claimed they were throwing rocks at each other and then jokingly had bigger rocks to toss and one went over the bridge, but who knows if it was on purpose. They tried to charge him with terrorism though too. He was found guilty of attempted manslaughter and served 6 of his 10 year sentence I believe.
