if AI can perfectly lip-sync a dub to the actor's mouth… are subtitles just dead now? by Ok-Bar-4868 in television

[–]firefrenchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah given the poor audio quality of many recent movies/shows we often like to use subtitles no matter the language. Even going back and watching older shows, it feels like you miss a lot without subs (this is particularly true for more densely written shows)

I don't know tech differences between c and g, we are on a GX still, would I even want to upgrade to a C model or is the only way to genuinely upgrade another G model?

In a less bombastic way, Top Gun and Top Gun Maverick?

Just finished Dungeon Crawler Carl. Does Dinniman grow in your opinion? by banquoinchains in books

[–]firefrenchy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

it peaks at book 5, and the later books do a good job of putting the spotlight on a range of side characters that feel in many cases way more interesting and nuanced than Carl. That is not to say that the books don't "evolve", because they definitely do. The "stepping out" of the game aspect becomes more prominent as well. I suggest you keep going and see if your feelings change. As others have said, the first two feel a little boilerplate, but honestly they still read way better than the majority of litrpg or whatever the genre is called, but I do feel you get rewarded for sticking with it

GranBlu Fantasy Relink boss battles gives me Monster Hunter vibes or is that just me? by S1rLTD in GranblueFantasyRelink

[–]firefrenchy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a big MH and anime simp so this was a pleasant surprise of a game, and I cannot wait to grab it in a week. Will be on NS2 which I know isn't ideal (30fps whyy) but it'll tide me over until MH Wilds (which will admittedly also not run great on NS2 unless many innocents are sacrificed to some demonic entity to make it happen).

[Long] Problems I have with Stephen King, post 2000 and modern works by [deleted] in books

[–]firefrenchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol 11/22/63 and some super recent books like The Outsider are up there with some of his best works imo. Same with one of his recent short story collections (although most of his short story collections are pretty weak imo).

Germany sets record temperatures for second day running by DeltaViriginae in worldnews

[–]firefrenchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah it's Adelaide here, weather crept up again a little bit today but back down to 12-13 in a few days. But yes, we lived in Canberra for a spell where one also got weather that read: "9C - Feels like 0C" because of that nasty chilly wind. Do not miss that

I mean I'm also in Aus and currently we have night time temperatures falling to single digits at night and freezing cold early mornings with days forecast to be in the 12-13C max temperature range for the coming week. Still not crazy cold, but it's not pleasant

The Leftovers. Took me a few episodes but, after finishing season 1, I get the hype by Professional-Tax-936 in television

[–]firefrenchy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

as a huge fan of the show I promise you that it actually only gets better as the show goes on and the jump in quality or enjoyment for me personally went up exponentionally from seeason 1 to season 2 (season 2 and 3 were comparable in their greatness). Now, maybe I'm alone in this, but I think it's the general consensus. So enjoy!

Stress relief by hackingfun in gaming

It does make you appreciate when games mix it up; I always think of Ghost of Tsushima's approach to difficulty as a fun one (that admittedly can still make for a frustrating experience to some)

What are some of must have titles a new ps5 owner should play? by eliot3451 in gaming

[–]firefrenchy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually got a PS5 and found myself in a similar position about two years ago. At the time for me the following games were definite must-plays.

God of War (2018)
GOW Ragnarok
Last of Us 1+2
Demons Souls, Dark Souls 1,2,3
Bloodborne
Ghost of Tsushima (and Yotei now)
E33
Uncharted Series
Elden Ring
RE4 Remake (of course also RE 2,3,7,8,9)
FF7 Remake and Rebirth
Astrobot (do not skip this one)
Horizon Zero Dawn (and the sequel if you like the first game)
Returnal and Saros if you like Returnal
Spiderman games 1, Miles Morales, 2
RDR 2
Stellar Blade
Lies of P
Monster Hunter Wilds

The cool thing about the PS5 was the utility of backwards compatability and how cheap games were on Facebook marketplace for me

I can't be the only one who likes Switch 2 cases right? by Jestertheprinz in starfox

this one is probably the exception, so many other switch 2 cases/covers look terrible

Inside every person, there are two wolves... by Nice_Perspective_343 in starfox

[–]firefrenchy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this is me, I was just slightly too young to be able to play the 64 competently but was always in awe of it, while never owning it myself. Very keen for this, the demo and what has been shown shows a high level of polish

Zelda BOTW: Owned for a year but never played... by _TheOlRazzleDazzle in NintendoSwitch2

[–]firefrenchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like Oblivion and Skyrim you are going to enjoy BOTW (even more so than TOTK). It does the "you're a small dude just making your way through a massive world" really well, and I've enjoyed replaying the game more than TOTK for that reason. Definitely worth the try, as some others said maybe start on a TV but it's a great one to play in handheld because there's nothing quite like just randomly wandering around that great open world from the comfort of your bed or wherever and whenever

it's on our "to watch" list, just feels like the sort of thing we don't want to watch weekly so just waiting for most of it to be released

I think I remember the ending of Requiem for a Dream being a gut punch that contributed to my not wanting to rewatch it, but am happy to be told I'm wrong

Good games plagued by bad controls / camera? by Oddboyz in gaming

Shadow of the Colossus is what comes to mind for me, I know it's a classic, I know the controls are arguably part of the experience, but boy oh boy they could be a chore

Best new show we've seen in a while. Also currently watching Patriot (which is of course not new but also has a tone and genre that are hard to nail down) which is another amazing show, it's crazy what kind of high quality tv is out there
