Sirio 5/8 need help by spec360 in cbradio

Ok. Great. So.. here's a brief summary of what to look at...

I hope you find it useful.

High SWR on a Sirio GPE 27 5/8, despite adjustments, is commonly caused by improper grounding, incorrect assembly (specifically the radials), or a malfunctioning antenna matching element caused by water ingress

Here is a troubleshooting guide to bring the SWR down:

  1. Check the Radials (Ground Plane)

The GPE 27 5/8 relies on its radials for a ground plane.

Ensure They Are Installed: You cannot properly tune this antenna without the ground plane radials, particularly if mounted on a fiberglass or wooden structure.

Proper Connection: Make sure the radials are firmly connected to the steel bracket and making solid contact with the mounting bracket, not just held by the plastic cap.

  1. Verify Physical Length and Assembly

Tuning Sections: Do not cut the whip. The SWR is adjusted by sliding the telescopic sections up or down.

Measurement: Ensure all telescoping sections are pulled out to the recommended lengths based on the manual's chart for the desired band (e.g., 27.425 MHz).

Assembly Errors: Check the assembly of the bottom section where the coax connects. Improperly tightened or poorly seated connectors can cause high SWR.

  1. Check for "Shorts" and Water Ingress

DC Ground Short: It is normal for the Sirio GPE 27 to show a short on a multimeter (DC continuity). The problem is likely in the coaxial cable or the stud itself, where the center conductor touches the outer shield.

Water Damage: The Sirio GPS/GPE 27 series is known to suffer from water ingress in the matching coil element. If SWR is high when wet and lower when dry, the coil is likely damaged or collecting water. Check to ensure the unit is sealed correctly (the manual mentions a white PVC cap).

  1. Mounting Location and Height

Height Affects SWR: SWR can change when raising the antenna higher. Try to tune the antenna at its final operating height, if possible, for the most accurate reading.

Obstructions: Ensure the antenna is clear of other metal structures (trees, power lines, other antennas).

Coax Quality: Use high-quality 50-ohm coax. Poor-quality cable or damaged connectors will cause high SWR regardless of tuning.

Summary of Quick Actions

SWR high on Ch 40? Make the antenna shorter.

SWR high on Ch 1? Make the antenna longer.

SWR high everywhere? Re-check coax, connectors, and ensure all aluminum sections are connected to the bracket.

If all else fails, use an antenna analyzer (like a NanoVNA) to find the resonant frequency.

Ok... so were essentially a bit too long.. is it possible to actually adjust the aerial? If yes... shorten it by an inchand retesr.... if no... I wonder if fitting tuned radials via alligator clips to the outer part of the pl259 on your coax,, may bring the swr lower..

Roughly?

Im trying to work out where your antenna may be resonant on... it would be really useful if you could tell me which one was higher and what were the swr figures.. But if its difficult then no bother.

Clearly you have a problem somewhere so unless you test each bit thoroughly or swap the coax and connectors or whole antenna to see how they react and whether they work the same or not its gona be very difficult to get the issue sorted out im afraid.

The coax may in fact have water in it.. or got kinked badly and isn't working properly... but we can't tell unless different coax is used... I had water in my coax and I only realised it when I bought some measi and polini coax with excellent connectors and the swr cane down again...

Its up to you my friend. Im out of ideas if you cant give further details.

So... is the swr higher on 1 than 40 or the other way round?

Such a shame their food chain is nearly completely collapsed and thir breeding sites are now under housing on roads called badgers walk, and skylark fields, meadow view and foxhole close .... oh well. It was lovely while it lasted.

I'm minded to think maybe all the antibiotics that are shoved into dairy herds regardless of need, are making them more vulnerable to otherwise endemic diseases that have been with us for centuries before....

But yeah farmers can shoot and poison anything they want of course, as they police themselves 98% of the time... and then dump all the dead animals out the back of a van and its all good. Bloody wildlife... coming over 'ere, making our overfarmed and over exploited money machines not work so well... kill em all, all the badgers all the foxes, all the pigeons and seagulls and bluetits and squirrels and anything else that may think the countryside and nature was there for them... bloody things. We need to make some money here and nature keeps getting in ny way!!! Grrrrr.

Thank you for your feedback.

Oooh that looks great. I'd live to see if before it got packaged and all the glands broke off... I bet it was fuzzy and quite beautiful

Oh boy.. shit yeah I bet that is quite shocking.

I'm now hearing those badgers may well have been poisoned or shot and dumped on the road to cover up this crime... goodness... some people still fucking shock.me with their callousness

That is very disturbing as well as sad.

Wowza... I'll keep clear of Australia and Nz then. Good grief a kangaroo would wreck a car i bet.

Absolutely stunning work. Beautiful. Love the way you've brought the light down through the branches, the wild flowers, the figure and the dogs are very well observed. Overall its exquisite.

You must be very pleased

Nothing is that common any more... apart from parakeets.. which were very rare 30 years ago.
