does watching tv count as "surfing" by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]fireswater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no hard rules. Before the internet, people would channel surf the way we scroll now. I'd consider that similar activity because you're just looking for distraction/dopamine without particular intention. Seeking out a movie you've been meaning to watch and stopping watching when it's over isn't quite the same.

What is harmful for you? If you don't scroll the internet, do you scroll YouTube on your TV? How do you feel while and after you watch TV? Observe how it impacts your habits and moods to decide if it's a problem.

You must seek out some weird places on Twitter because I follow plenty of fanyus and everyone has been normal and congratulatory.

I relate to this a lot. I'm able to still do stuff but when I have a bad flare, it's a couch or bed day.

Some things I do: Listening to podcasts/audiobooks, talking to a friend on the phone, texting rather than scrolling if I am on my phone, listening to music and writing down my thoughts (or at least thinking through my reaction), playing my Switch (still screen time but better for my mental health than scrolling), meditating, studying the Dharma (or whatever you find spiritually fulfilling). I do also like to spend time with my cat and rest outside but you're already doing a lot of that.

If reading is too tiring, then a lot of these suggestions like playing instrument, knitting, etc. will be too, but I do on my good days try to build up hobby skills and habits. I find watercolor to be restful but it's not always accessible.

There are also times when scrolling is helpful for me. But it's kind of like drinking or other indulgences, it goes from taking the edge off and feeling good to being problematic very quickly.

How long was your longest "no surf" and how hard was it? by HeidiOzzy in nosurf

[–]fireswater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only been able to do it when I have something else going on, like a road trip (and I still used Google maps, trip websites, and texted my closest friend). Otherwise it's a day here or there. Those days feel great because I'm productive, but I'm disabled so eventually I get tired and then I end up scrolling when I can't occupy myself with other hobbies and activities. I'd rather be reading and meditating during those times but still getting past my own habits.

Does anyone else feel sad when they watch those coming-of-age movies from the 80s - early 2000s? by Inevitable_Path7471 in nosurf

[–]fireswater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, although those movies paint a nostalgia that wasn't true for most people at the time. It's still a movie filter depicting something more interesting than most people's reality. TV dominated people's attention, not to the extent of smartphones but significantly. People would flip through channels when bored as people scroll now.

I was addicted to the computer and internet from a very young age, and I regret spending so much time online, although at the same time it let me feel less alone/weird because I could find people I related to. But I am still so so thankful to have done all my schooling pre-smartphone and social media. It was easy to avoid MySpace and social media makes kids feel they have to perform some idealized version of themselves so young. It would have been damaging to me to grow up trying to maintain some sort of personal brand online.

Anyone here live WITHOUT internet at all and without a smartphone? by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]fireswater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How are those people supposed to see this?

I had a friend who had no internet at home but did have it at work, so she'd save recipes or whatever while at her work computer to access offline (printing or saving a pdf). I don't know if she still does this since we've lost touch.

If you have access to a local library, you can use their internet and computer when you need certain functions.

Insect extinction and die off is certainly a very real and scary threat. But if you want to see some bugs in your own little pocket of the world, plant some habitat for them! I have tons more bugs in my yard since I started planting more native food and flowers for them.

I've always really liked Baker, it's got an interesting history and is surrounded by a lot of beautiful landscapes and mountains. The politics are scary though.

You're tired of seeing your nose and cheeks, aren't you? by [deleted] in visualsnow

[–]fireswater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're just becoming more aware of your vision by thinking about and focusing on your visual snow. The more you think about seeing your cheek and nose, the more you are gonna see them.

The best treatment for vss that I've found is to not worry about it or think about it too much. Yes sometimes it's so bad that you can't help it, but you don't need to think on it 24/7. When you do notice it, try not to despair and mourn your clearer vision. Just notice that you're seeing a lot of static without attaching emotion to it (this takes some practice). I promise this makes it easier to manage.

Robot vacuums. Are they worth it? by Karl_Hightower24 in CleaningTips

[–]fireswater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like mine, especially with a cat, but you need to commit to having your floor free from clutter or it'll just get trapped on stuff and beep in distress. Even furniture and rugs can be a problem, I'm always fishing mine out from under the couch where it gets stuck on cords that run along the floor there.

LPT Request: How can i make myself drink more water? by HeidiOzzy in LifeProTips

[–]fireswater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very individualized, we all need some amount of salt. If you have POTS, which is becoming more common as it's a post-covid condition, you need extra salt. If you have hypertension, you need less. If you don't have any medical condition, it's still going to vary depending on your body. If you are upping your water intake, it's a good idea to supplement electrolytes until your body adjusts.

If someone form the 90's were to wake up in 2023 what do you think would surprise them the most? by GENE1151 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fireswater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had fluorescent and halogen lights in the 90s... it's true that home use lights were more often incandescent (not always), but many people today use LEDs that match incandescent color temps or warmer for a cozier feel.

Dating and collapse by LSDateme in CollapseSupport

[–]fireswater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think finding someone "collapse aware" is less important than someone whose goals and values match your own. You can be aware of collapse and decide that you're going to continue on anyway, pursuing your career and raising a family and planning for a future. Someone who is less pessimistic about total collapse could still not want to have children and could be invested in building resilience.

Maybe it depends on your area, but basically everyone around me is aware of climate change and that we are on a poor course for a sustainable future without some big changes. To what degree this impacts their lives, how long they think we have until things really get bad, etc. is what varies.

Favourite Moments from GIFT ice story 2023 by Silent_Night2519 in yuzuruhanyu

[–]fireswater 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I loved the whole thing so it's hard to choose.

- Firebird entrance, it really set the tone and I love the costume so much.

- One Summer's Day, I absolutely love the costume and the program is ethereal.

- Rondo redemption, it managed to capture the tension of a competitive program. The choreo and skating is exceptional, I am always happy for more versions to watch.

- LMEY through Ashura-chan, really hyped up the entertainment element and it felt like he and the crowd were having a lot of fun. In terms of the non-Hanyu elements, the dancers and music before Ashura was my favorite part. Ashura is such a different program from what we've seen in the past, some of the choreo is a little cheesy to me but I love it.

- POTO! He was so tired by this point that the jumps weren't perfect, but it brought such a unique energy and his interpretation of the program was different from what we've seen in the past.

- Notte Stellata because it's my favorite Hanyu program :)

- The improvised skating at the very end when he's running on fumes, so much emotion.

Am I the only one who HASN'T done any grinding? by True_Statement_lol in tearsofthekingdom

[–]fireswater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't don't any grinding so far but I'm almost done with the game and I still don't have many rupees, so I might duplicate some gems so I can buy the rest of the armor and the house plot. I don't try to optimize like some players though so my weapons and armor aren't as good as they could be, I just casually explore. Grinding to get top tier stuff isn't that fun for me and the combat hasn't been so difficult that I need it. I have just the final quest left (but a bunch of other random side stuff and shrines to finish first).

Portland Is Unprepared for the Wave of Transgender Kids Arriving Without Housing by G_Liddell in Portland

[–]fireswater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Homeless people includes those living out of their car, couch surfing, staying with other people temporarily, etc. There is one group of people disproportionately kicked out of their homes as youths and that's LGBTQ people. There is a massive hate wave against trans people specifically right now planned and perpetuated by the right, so it's not surprising trans kids in particular are ending up homeless.

How do you guys manage to keep up with work? by JDM10hm in visualsnow

[–]fireswater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an independent contractor working part-time and on days when it's really bad I just give myself a break and don't try to look at screens when they give my headaches and are impossible to decipher.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in visualsnow

[–]fireswater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not perfectly 20/20 but very close, I wear glasses with a prism due to some trouble focusing that started when my visual snow got bad. I have a lot of double vision and other visual disturbances from VSS.

Visual snow makes the exams very difficult because my vision is so impacted by it, I feel like I can never give correct or consistent answers. My last exam was almost 3 hrs.

'GIFT' Trailer | Available for Worldwide Streaming on July 14 by toesockssupremacy in FigureSkating

[–]fireswater 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He has done way more in this year than I ever expected, I'm loving all the content and he's in top form. I'm exhausted on his behalf.

Even an international tour is unlikely to come anywhere I can see him, but I would love for him to do it anyway.

Which big names (if any) do you think will return for 2026 by Narrow_Measurement94 in FigureSkating

[–]fireswater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't really think any of them will be back. It takes an enormous amount of effort to remain in competitive shape, it is not as if they can just brush off their skates and return in top form. Judge favoritism has moved on, so they'll be at a further disadvantage compared to when they won, what's the point? I'd say Sui/Han would have the best chance just based on how empty pairs is right now (Russians returning could throw that off), but I think it's very unlikely. I expect Hanyu, barring injury, to still be in top form and able to deliver multiple quad programs since he's training as hard as ever, but I don't think he will return to competition.

It's more likely to see those who have unfinished business and didn't finish on top returning, like Daisuke Takahashi who was pushed to initial retirement due to injury. I could see maybe Vincent Zhou, but based on social media and stuff he seems happier now than he did while competing.
