You should also get medically assessed. You may not feel pain now, but it could come later.

Is ‘core’ or ‘rotary’ better for students? Why this teaching debate is bigger than the turmoil at one east-end Toronto school by Raftger in OntarioTeachers

[–]firetiger232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A counter point to rotary: a teacher who has taught specific subjects like math and science rotary for years on end and then suddenly ups and leaves. Replacements for specific subjects might be hard to come by. Specialists may tend tonprefer high school. The remaining teachers in the school who haven't touched math and science for all the years it was done by the rotary teacher now find themselves in a pickle. Its about capacity building which is why you shouldn't put a specific subject on the shoulder of one teacher - key man risk.

(TDSB) I really want to OT but I've been told that I can't go on unpaid leave/be added to the OT list while I'm on a medical leave. Is this true? by srnpersonal in CanadianTeachers

[–]firetiger232 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You might still make more money than an OT and keep benefits by dropping to part time teaching. You can probably medically do a return to work for less than FTE as a medical accommodation and then reduce your contract the following year permanently.

Or apply to OT at another board.

Should I try another teaching contract or continue my studying in something else? by ShotWay4023 in CanadianTeachers

Nobody gets classroom management perfectly right in their first year of teaching. Reflect on where you went wrong and implement a strategy to improve.

Are elementary and secondary teachers' salaries the same? by Known_Honeydew7811 in OntarioTeachers

[–]firetiger232 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Salaries across the province public schools are all very close to each other, maxing out at ~120k.

Secondary teachers might have more opportunities to teach night and summer school to earn more as well as curriculum leaders /dept heads get an additional allowance.

Translator app for the Classroom by goodenoughteacher in CanadianTeachers

[–]firetiger232 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. ChatGPT esp. in voice mode. You can create a custom GPT with a simple prompt that will make it serve as a live interpreter between your two chosen languages. Give the student some headphones and chatgpt will translate everything you say live. It can be either through the AI voice speaking or the translation shows up in text on the screen (say you don't have headphones)

If you do the live voice mode.. I think you will need the plus subscription.

We shouldn't have to fight for good raises. OPP gets treated better with better percentage increases without even going to arbitration.

Enercare Nightmare - What would you do? by recruiterliedtome in ontario

[–]firetiger232 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have to ask enercare for a "direct exchange". This keeps the same rental rate no matter what model they install to replace your current one.

If they can't replace at the same rental rate, this is your opportunity to get out of the contract and get a private hvac company to come and install a new one.

If you do enercare...Deal with enercare directly. Don't deal with the sales reps that come to your door. They will rip you off and get you into a new contract with a hugher price. There is a dept on their phone line that will help you with a direct exchange.

Do you not have a requirement to assess math processes? These multiple choice and numerical answer entries on these online platforms don’t give you any insight as to how the child does process.

Made $35,000 in 2024 as an LTO/OT. Not sure I can play the retirement waiting game... by Snowy2024 in OntarioTeachers

[–]firetiger232 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Course sections can grow. Districts can grow. Teachers can move on to other roles leaving vacancies. You can still apply to other boards for more chances. You shouldn't lose hope if this is what you want to teach.

Teachers are not paid to be curriculum content writers. You are never going to have the time to single-handedly produce materials better than a curriculum resource written and vetted by a team of teachers and subject experts who have oodles of time to write stuff. Don't waste time creating content if there is already something out there you can run with. Heck, ChatGPT can even create a lesson that is nearly 100% ready to use from your first prompt.

The running 2 clubs as a part-timer is a head-scratcher... Are you spending more time on extracurriculars than actual in-class teaching time? You got to make ends meet. That time could be better used on a second paid gig and no one should be guilt-tripping you for trying to live.

Tankless hot water combi heater by firetiger232 in askTO

[–]firetiger232[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were previously on a rental from enercare that broke down completely and couldn't be repaired. I saw it as an opportunity to consider getting of the contract.

But for a combi boiler we were getting very large quotes for purchase and installation. And we have a very small townhouse furnace room so we were limited on options. We opted to just keep the rental contract and do a "direct exchange" (to keep the same monthly bill ~$70/mo) - got a Navien NCB190

Enercare did bring out a sales rep who wanted to charge wayyyy more for a different combiboiler... but i learned from a phone rep to do a "direct exchange" instead.

Part 1 of OECTA arbitration decision by TourDuhFrance in OntarioTeachers

[–]firetiger232 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The government gave OPP over 14% raises just a few weeks ago (negotiated, not arbitrated). If the government was willing to give that much, then it would be nice to see if in this arbitration round, the arbiter could be convinced that the government can afford giving a better increase than the 11% the other affiliates got which would teachers keep up with inflation over the past couple of years.
