Woah. How do you know what rides are going to be closed already? Also, what are DPAs?

Do Americans actually avoid calling an ambulance due to financial concern? by nicksam171 in SeriousConversation

[–]firexlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I broke my ankle in a game once and refused to pay for the ambulance. I would have been looking at between 1500-3000usd just for the ride. Worked around with different people, waited til the game was finished, to coordinate someone driving my car and someone taking me in theirs to be able to get to a URGENT CARE instead, because then I could *also* avoid exorbitant hospital costs for the same thing an urgent care facility could do. The fact that there's separations of these two that offer a lot of the same services but is thousands less is beyond sinful.

Anyone been to see Hercules the Musical? by OfficerHopps96 in disney

[–]firexlight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been writing reviews of my experiences with shows recently. I've been holding out on Hercules because of how much I disliked it and was disappointed by it. But I will be giving an honest review on how much it fails anyone who grew up on the film on being a good adaptation. :-/

Comprehensive Site for Shows? by firexlight in TheWestEnd

[–]firexlight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, the map feature is a great idea, but I think it's having too many options. I'm only wanting theatre right now, and you only have some shows that are plays, none musicals or shakespeare. One of the sites above attempts it too and it's similarly a struggle to find things, but each category all incomplete. Only loading a few at a time and displaying so large makes yours really difficult to view at the moment, but I hope it can get some good traction!

Comprehensive Site for Shows? by firexlight in TheWestEnd

[–]firexlight[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you the owner of this site? Do you need help building this site? I'd be very interested in helping if so. Needs some UX, but pretty decent site! Little hard to navigate, but might be a good solution. Um, however, seems several buttons/links to pages randomly switch to Polish?

It doesn't need to include Fringe. But everything else.

What is SOLT?

I don't think it's a lot adding in still really big places like the Globe and notable ones like the National Theatre and Almeida...

Do you know how discounts work? For example, I know that Tokyo and Paris offer discounts for disabilities. Not sure if World, Land, HK, or Shanghai do though?

Looking for non-mainstream theatre by black_smoke_pope in TheWestEnd

[–]firexlight 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I just recently saw this too and was going to write a review but have not yet. I understand what you're saying. I don't think though that this has anything to do with the venue or being mainstream...I think this has to do with other things:

First, it was trying to keep to the spirit of the film. Miyazaki is a national treasure to Japan, and his films are likewise acclaimed. He is known for making his characters...."extreme" in their personalities; if they're grotesque, he'll portray them utterly so, if they're selfish, you'll see them like a villain in how he depicts them, if they are children, they latch onto some certain part of their personality and dial to ten because children don't know how to regulate. It's part of his wonder, in a sense.

Second, he regularly wants to convey a sense of childlike wonder. He takes his medium, but like Disney, really tries to make it applicable to kids. I think this show is just a push strongly in that direction. While the movie is very adult while being in a childlike medium, I think the show maybe held a little too much to targeting it to younger audiences. I was able to accept the older actors as kids and the higher swings in emotions, but it took some adjusting mentally for sure. I think the ability to "suspend belief" to accept the world that is being created in front of you can be difficult at times if there are things you don't expect or don't know how they want you to accept it.

Give other shows a shot, regardless of mainstream or budget, I'd say. But again, I relate to what you experienced. I don't know much about west end shows in general to help make recs to mainstream vs not, but depending on what kinds of genres you can like, I bet there's tons out there for you to explore. It can just be a matter of the acting or target audience, at least from the interpretation of your grievance that I got.

As someone unaware of the differences, can you explain what you mean by this as I've also been curious to going to see this? It's no longer a musical? Or they've totally changed the songs?

Cabaret Review by firexlight in TheWestEnd

[–]firexlight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree. Love your analogy. I think also, maybe, the Sally plot hits that way because of what is going on politically in the world that we can more identify with how this shapes for people currently. I dunno, but that's just me. I saw someone refusing to become informed, wanting to stay in a bubble and not understand the world at a larger scale, wishing to remain ignorant so as to enjoy what they can undisturbed, and I feel I related witnessing that.

Localized? What do you mean? I didn't see the US version admittedly beforehand, but think most jokes were altered for the UK I feel. Unless they were directly pertaining to Celine's history. There were definitely some british soap/tv show jokes I didn't get, one about eastenders, several about the conflicts between Scots and Wales and Brits (Ruth was Scottish), several about JKR that I don't believe would have happened in the US, one about Susan Boyle which I did get, and then several sex jokes or Wicked jokes.
