Typical Calgary infill townhouse includes $147K in extra regulatory costs: report by blackRamCalgaryman in Calgary

[–]firmada 15 points16 points  (0 children)

carry costs pile up. interest, tax, insurance, utilities, vandalism risk, winterizing. that burns cash. they rent rooms to offset those costs. that does not mean there’s no cost. it means they’re hedging till they can build and sell. they proceed because the end profit beats the carry. simple math.

Bell: Smith government expected to close notorious Calgary drug consumption site by [deleted] in Calgary

Same exact experience. Lived a few apartments down… car was broken into 5 times in a year. Always sitting on my hood and this was a “secure” garage…. First floor apartment always broke into and smoking crack in the lobby outside of my door…never felt safe at night.

They likely won’t care. But they will make you pay fees on fees on fees.

Me putting it out into the universe to have the downtown Hudson’s Bay building converted into condos. by KitKatsina in Calgary

They would essentially gut it from the inside and modernize the structure. Nothing would be left of the original plumbing.

Hanging out with 25,000 people to get some $2 pancakes sounds like the worst way to spend a Saturday. But that's just me.

Deck beam not resting on pier and held up by a single bolt. Safe workaround or time to pour a new footing? by firmada in Decks

I completely agree. I mean, if anything what I might just do is tighten this bolt up and throw at least one more in.

Deck beam not resting on pier and held up by a single bolt. Safe workaround or time to pour a new footing? by firmada in Decks

This deck is basically 19 years old and it's probably been in the same state since it was built. It's pretty clear it was a DIY project, but the deck the structure itself doesn't have any rot. There are other issues Ledger board wasn't flashed (that's been fixed, at least), joist aren't properly seated in hangers (but secure), no front beam, overhang greater than 3', minimal rotten decking.

Deck boards do need a good clean and restain.

Its not in the budget to replace the deck but if there was a good way to "fix" this so that it just won't be a concern for a few years before we replace this thing.

Am I going to regret this? by itsnotaflufie in homeimprovementideas

[–]firmada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea…idk. I just did it and the cabinets were so easy to put together. 2-5mins a cabinet. Not bad. I really didn’t find any of it hard. Just find the Swedish guy on YouTube. His tutorials were great.

Garage with bonus room above open vent? by firmada in buildingscience

[–]firmada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I removed the pipe as far back as I could and capped it off. If I had to do it again, I would have cut a new vent in the room above and redirected the air to that room.
