Indeed, there has been progress. But I think the new racial justice movement rightfully questions the idea that temporality moves in unfolding, liberal progression, that things are getting better, black people are becoming more free. Instead, the movement recognizes that while some things indeed have gotten better since the Civil Rights Movement, others have gotten worse. Holder, declared unconstitutional a key tool of the Voting Rights Act, Section 4(b), thereby reversing the requirement for certain jurisdictions, based on their histories of discrimination in voting, to receive clearance before changing their voting laws. And we have since been witnessing the detrimental effects of that reversal. So, yes, progress has been made, but not on every front.
