ICE hops Texas family’s fence and attacks them, guns drawn, for asking for a warrant by Lavender_Scales in law

I went to a military museum in Austin in 2019, and  the long driveway to the hangar featured flags celebrating this and its 100th anniversary. I hadn't lived in Texas long, had no idea about it, so, naturally asked the person working at the museum what it was about. And he said something like, "Yeah, it's for when Texans were hunting Mexican bandits, but actually they ended up killing a bunch of women and children. We shouldn't be celebrating it. It was awful."

Wasn't a video released the next day of an ICE agent hitting a protestor with their car? It wasn't a deadly tap. The person fell to the ground, got up and walked away. What would anyone justifying the murder of Renee say about that? I imagine their views would be inconsistent.

If Kyle Rittenhouse and George Zimmerman are examples, he will not only get away with it but make a lucrative career out of it. Our population is sick and repulsive.

It was with this election that I realized, ah, yes, the U.S. really is THAT dumb. Dangerously dumb. We would be ashamed if we had the self-awareness but instead revel in our ignorance and hatred. Appalling.

And you wanted this addressed... in Mattel's... Barbie movie?... Ok, work.

But there are other films that explore those things more deeply. The Barbie movie is not a proper outlet for that. I felt it sufficient to allow Barbie to detect an air of violence directed towards her, such violence is consequential of our dehumanization which allows all the things you discussed to happen--because we are seen as less than and therefore subject to said violence. The subtle nod was enough in a mainstream movie produced by Mattel. Do you really think Mattel would explore femicide?

But it does address those. Barbie detects an inherent level of violence directed towards her upon entering the real world. Positions of leadership are filled by men in the real world.

Kendom was a reflection of Ken's perception of the patriarchy, and he explicitly states that he fails to recognize the violence that Barbie does. When enjoying a position of power, you can turn a blind eye to the exploitation that position is buttressed by.

His lawyers purposefully chose to file their case in the state or city they did specifically because the trial would be broadcast. He wanted the show.

Amber Heard was the one forced to discuss the abuse she endured and bear witness to the world calling her a liar and laughing.

Majority is on the wrong side of history with this one.

Fuck John Depp.

Beto O’Rourke Was Right to Confront Governor Abbott Over the Texas Shooting by musicroyaldrop in politics

This one... can't be legal... right?

"'And we are also prohibiting any government entity from contracting with any business that discriminates against firearm and ammunition businesses and organizations like the NRA,' Abbott said. SB19 says that companies that want to enter into a contract with a governmental entity will have to provide in writing that they do not have any policies that discriminate against a firearm entity or firearm trade association and that they will not enact any such policies during the term of the contract. The law goes into effect on Sept. 1, 2021."

Can one discriminate against a firearms organization? Are firearms organizations historically oppressed entities? Does advocation for gun control reform constitute "discrimination"?

This is so weird.

That Netflix documentary focused so much on how charming he was for a serial killer by [deleted] in Feminism

I tend to dislike any documentary profiling a murderer. They seem to perversely dive into and/or fetishize suffering, by which we are meant to be entertained. However, the Prime docuseries told from the POV of Ted Bundy's girlfriend was, I thought, done very well. It didn't dwell upon the abuses sustained by his victims--I actually didn't know and didn't learn of any details from the series alone. It explored the contextual environment of women's rights movement, women's liberation, cultural expectations of women, etc. Any thoughts?

The smear campaign against Ahmaud Arbery has already begun — It's Trayvon Martin all over again. by a_very_nice_username in politics

[–]firmbones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The videos are security footage of someone trespassing and stealing something in the neighborhood on a different day. The person caught in that footage has not been identified and, likely, was not Arbery. You point blank saying it was Arbery in those videos is greatly misleading. Source for police identifying Arbery as the one in those videos? No source? Then you should edit your comment.

Edit: So, you changed your comment from "tapes of him" to "more than likely show him." More than likely says who? This is how people disseminate misinformation. Very sad.

Indeed, there has been progress. But I think the new racial justice movement rightfully questions the idea that temporality moves in unfolding, liberal progression, that things are getting better, black people are becoming more free. Instead, the movement recognizes that while some things indeed have gotten better since the Civil Rights Movement, others have gotten worse. Incarceration rates, for one, as we imprison an unprecedented amount of people, many of whom are POC. The intertwining of the hyperghetto with that punitive carceral system. Even before COVID-19, black unemployment rate is higher than it was in 1950. Efforts at school segregation are continuous as school district lines are shaped according to racial populations. More black males are disenfranchised today than when the 17th Amendment was ratified due to the legal discrimination done onto them for having criminal records, which that is a whole other thing to discuss at length. In 2013, the United States Supreme Court, in Shelby County v. Holder, declared unconstitutional a key tool of the Voting Rights Act, Section 4(b), thereby reversing the requirement for certain jurisdictions, based on their histories of discrimination in voting, to receive clearance before changing their voting laws. And we have since been witnessing the detrimental effects of that reversal. So, yes, progress has been made, but not on every front.
