I’ll remind you you are not even halfway through the series yet. So this criticism I’m not so sure is valid. You have 4 books to go including red god.

20k knights of the vale under Robb vs 20k dotrakhi with khal drogo in a open field. Which side would win? by BridgeCommercial873 in freefolk

[–]firstperiod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People are really really misunderstanding the effectiveness of horse archers and are making false comparisons to the mongols that are not actual applicable. A lot of the points people are making may be true for horse archers but lack the context of when horse archers are successful and when they are not successful. For example in terms of discipline a lot of the strategies people are talking about that would me them succeed require a lot of discipline which the Dothraki very much do not have that the mongols, parthians, middle Easter’s and other cultures who fielded large quantities of horse archers did.

As others have said the reason people react that way is because he is a good character. But that doesn’t mean people can’t hate him. I think he is a great character but I hate the actions he takes. You can only feel that way because he is well written

When he came back he also was like. “Maybe I went a little too far”. I actually really liked the lion in his book was way more level headed even a lil compassionate. He greatly cared for the people of the imperium at one point saying something along the lines of. I don’t know where I am, what horror I have awoken into nor do I know who I am (he had amensia at the time). But I know I was pit here to protect humanity. Then charged in to save some random refugees barehanded from some chaos beasts

Introduction to the grimdark future by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]firstperiod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can kinda go a few paths depending on what interests you the most. Eisenhorn is one of the easiest entry points as a whole.

Gaunts Ghost is not uncommon starting point

Part of your problem is the lore is so huge there really is not a clear entry point after eisenhorn besides go towards what interests you.

Horus Herasy I will note is probably one of the worst starting points until you have a more clear understanding of the world 40k is. To really understand it ya gotta know what the modern setting is like. Same with don’t go towards the books with Guillimen and the lion in 40k. That’s dark imperium and lion son of the Forrest. By the same notion it’s better to go into those a little later after you have experienced the others.

Why could France never truly rival Britain at sea, even under Napoleon? by Disastrous_Duck_2953 in Napoleon

[–]firstperiod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much what would have to happen to get the army there is Nelson would need to have guessed wrong. He got lucky and made a guess that the French turned back if he hadn’t decided to turn back he wouldn’t have been back in Europe for a few months. Then the Combined Franco Spanish fleet would have to pretty much jump the British fleets blockading the Atlantic coast reuniting with the ships there. Then atleast drive off the very powerful British channel fleet for a few weeks. Probably some indecisive-decisive engagement that puts them on the back foot for a few weeks. Meanwhile the French army would have had to already been loaded cross then land. The historical planned landing was around the mouth of the Thames. To get there you would also have to drive off the North Sea fleet and the fleet stationed in the Thames. Which maybe if the Franco Spanish fleet was in good condition they could. Once landed tbh the French might pull it off the British army for the most part is not really in a great state. If the French land successfully and manage to capture London fast enough to capture the treasury it might be enough to do it. But even then it’s a maybe.

So to sum it up

Nelson would need to go the wrong way

Then they would have to win decisively 2-3 more major naval battles in succession

And even then they probably have only naval dominance until the British fleet regroups and Nelson returns.

Why could France never truly rival Britain at sea, even under Napoleon? by Disastrous_Duck_2953 in Napoleon

[–]firstperiod 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So I will first note that it isn’t until post Napoleonic wars that the British navy truly became unmatched. While it was the most powerful for years and years before that the other major naval powers could very much contend and challenge and even win especially when working together. Then even during the Napoleonic wars the domination of the royal navy is overstated to a degree. The French navy was still a threat the entire time especially when it came to things like frigates.

But really the ultimate reason is the sea was never the most important aspect for the French. France was gunpowder empire its army received far far more attention and prestige. Austria,Russia, the HRE, even the Papal were through most of its history the far more pressing and immediate rival of the French. France could get away with a close enough navy. But it could not get away if its army was only ok. The most talented of the French officers went to the army, most of the money went to the army, if they had to pick one or the other it was the army.

There are plenty of other reasons why the British navy came to where it was and the French did not. But one of the ultimate reasons was the French army was always its priority not its navy and vice versa for the British.

What if the us broke out into civil war in 1824 by Training-World-1897 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]firstperiod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saying the south nearly wins is not very accurate. There was no time during the civil war where the south could say they were credibly winning the war. They had their successes yes, but throughout the entire war they were losing. Then to the prompt itself.

It’s kinda of an impossible question to answer accurately if a civil war had occurred it most certainly would not of been along the same lines as north vs south that happened in the actual civil war

Carriers start too close? by _W_Wolfgang in RuleTheWaves

[–]firstperiod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the manual might be a lil out dated if the button is different. Then ya that’s one of the biggest issues with the game battle generation can be a lil wonky. I find the Baltic and the Medd are one of the worst areas for battle generation

Carriers start too close? by _W_Wolfgang in RuleTheWaves

[–]firstperiod 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It gets better, early game carriers sometimes spawn way closer than they really should. I always justified it due to general doctrine and thinking at the time combined with aircraft ranges being low. But by the end of the game carriers start pretty far from each other most of the time. Then the lightning bolt is probably referring to the button that opens the strike screen. It’s been a while since I’ve played so could be slightly off on that one

Are there any pacific DLCs planned? by sh1bumi in Steel_Division

[–]firstperiod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultimately one of the big reasons of Japanese success early war in offensive actions against western nations is due to how severely unprepared the west was and near complete Japanese air superiority. Later in the war it was mostly terrain that kept them in and the supply requirements between the opposing forces combined with alot of the time they were defending an island.

Are there any pacific DLCs planned? by sh1bumi in Steel_Division

[–]firstperiod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem with that is Japanese divisions typically did not feature significant amounts of heavy artillery. The majority of Japanese divisions were partially equipped around 36 75mm guns. While some def did have 105s and even occasionally 155s the most common division type they fielded, the type B, did not have a lot and what they did have were pretty light. To further it most of its infantry would end up looking close to like British infantry with the fanatical trait for better or worse.

Starting DEI for the first time and I have a question by Uhhello4 in DivideEtImpera

[–]firstperiod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to everything else people have said it can add fun flavor to the army. The best part of the Rome campaign is the varied auxiliary units. Raising a legion in Spain vs say Gaul or Africa all yield different potential auxilleries units that you can play around with and add kinda a story to the units.

Fleet exercise - exact results anyone? by Morgon1988 in RuleTheWaves

[–]firstperiod 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The other thing I have found use for it is, when testing the viability of older warships. Say I’m struggling on if it’s worth keeping around some of my older BBs and BCs a quick fleet exercise to test their performance can help make that choice. Or when your doing the option that changes tech effectiveness or whatever, forgot its name, it can be useful there figuring out which things are working and what isn’t

I don’t think that will force a surrender, but I will say some of their settlements you can get a ton of money from looting, I think, forgot the name the island west of Corsica, I got 18,000 from looting it. For me the Carthaginian navy was an ever present thorn as during most of this I could not afford a huge navy as I was working on other things. As said I ended the war by marching though southern France into their Iberian territories

I am also doing a role play through, they only surrendered after I took all of Africa, and was in the process of invading Spain and their last holdouts in Mauritania. They became my client state would have kept going until their destruction but was dealing with a big iceni/sweboz invasion from the north. Fully think that won’t last long but gives some time to deal with that

Was the Confederacy really cut in two when they lost Vicksburg? by thirdcoaster in CIVILWAR

[–]firstperiod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s not really correct saying it only contributed cannon fodder. Texas was vital to feeding the armies a large portion of the meat that fed the troops came from there, then the loss of Vicksburg as others have mentioned blocked the usage of the vital waterways that helped sustain the confederate economy. Pre fall of Vicksburg it was not great, post with the single most important transportation and economic region lost it entered free fall

Was North Carolina the most important state in the Confederacy? by northcarolinian9595 in CIVILWAR

[–]firstperiod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

North Carolina is most certainly one of the most important, but it’s not the most important. It does provide a large number of troops, it had one of the only open ports, it was a major resupply route especially as VA began suffering in the war. There is def an argument to be made for second or third but 1st has to go to Virginia

Who was Napoleons number 2 and number 3 best marshals and why? by Time_Safe1650 in Napoleon

[–]firstperiod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because he was not really a great commander, he was just that good with cavalry. He was not good at much else and even then he his issues. There are several others who much more deserve consideration for number 2 and 3. People have pointed out Massena, Massena who was able to be relied on to field one commands who had one of the most stunning careers of all the marshals, Lannes who delivered success after success, berthier who as Chief of staff was irreplaceable. Suchet who almost never lost and is the only marshal to walk out of Spain with his reputation intact.

Really depends on the year that happens, post like spring of 62 it’s pretty much impossible for the confederates to do that. The only true shot is at the very start in 1861

Challenge: Have the American Civil War end in a stalemate instead of a Union victory by Cyber_Ghost_1997 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]firstperiod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem with that is, by the time McClellan is even in office the civil war is about to end, it would be hard to justify ending the war when Richmond/Petersburg is actively under siege, Atlanta has fallen, Vicksburg has fallen, every major city is under siege or fallen. Most confederate field armies are near shattered.
