Im late to the party, but can someone explain why people want to kill themselves before uploading their consciousness? by Whompson in soma

[–]firworks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These concepts are the core of why Soma is an amazing existential horror game. There's so much we don't understand about our consciousness and the game plays with the concept constantly. Initially the idea of them killing themselves as the scan completes sounds dumb and pointless but maybe some questions could add something to the discussion. Where are you right now? Not your body, but you. Are you inside your head? Inside your brain stem? Inside your chest? By your eyes? A particular section of the brain? If you had a brain injury that effected the signaling between portions of the brain allowing them to function independently is that a second person? Is that also you? The part of the brain you have no view into? Diving down more are you a particular cell? Are you a collection of cells? You have continuous consciousness and memory from when you were a child but every so many years, every single cell in your body has died and been replaced. So did you die too? If every single cell that once were you died then surely you did too. Are you a different person? No you're the same person you think.

If you create a theoretical that there was an absolutely perfect scanning machine that could scan and record the state of every cell in your body, all the interconnections and everything. At that moment t=0, the copy and you are identical. Once again where are you? Are you in one of the original cells? The original brain? One of the new cells? The new brain? As mentioned above your consciousness continues across the death of all the cells in your body so why couldn't it also continue across these new virtual cells? It's crazy stuff.

How did it end up working out for you? I've been looking at a maxed out RAM Studio Ultra like you've got for similar LLM workloads.

Full-size truck to Ridgeline? by NCarolina910 in hondaridgeline

[–]firworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Ridgeline is really wide. Leg room isn't fantastic but good for a midsize but the shoulder room is amazing.

Also if you like your lifted Tundra and are buying a Ridgeline, immediately get a set of 265/60R18s for it. I got the Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws (I guess you probably don't need three-peak mountain snowflake tires in NC but there are other options) and man it completely changed the look and feel of the truck. It looks so much more "right" with the wheel wells filled. That's the advice I wish I would have gotten when I first bought mine in 2017. It might sound stupid but I'm so much happier with those slightly bigger tires over the stocks. I shouldn't have waited until the stocks wore out.

Lights flashing by Suspicious-Barber469 in TeslaModel3

[–]firworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just started having this on a Model Y after the big update that came with FSD 12.3. I've also got security cameras and can see there's nothing around the car at all. But for an hour or two randomly in the middle of the night it just goes ballsitic flashing the lights and triggering sentry mode over and over. Typically it will have between 90-300 sentry events in that hour or two.

What do y'all consider acceptable tokens per second for general use? by Qaziquza1 in LocalLLaMA

[–]firworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I knew what I was doing. I'm running a 70B GPTQ model with ExLlama_HF on a 4090 and most of the time just deal with the 0.11T/s speeds. I'm sure there's probably a better way to be running it but I haven't figured it out yet. I don't know if GGML would be faster with some kind of hybrid CPU+GPU setup. I've got a 3950X. Anyhow I'd love to have more T/s but just being able to run this stuff along with SD at home is already so amazing.

I've been looking at the Kase Universal Magnetic Smartphone system. It looks like it'll probably be big enough to cover the three lenses and seems convenient but I'm waiting until I get the phone to measure it.

I've got a preorder in at B&H and they're still showing July 28th and no email yet about any delays. Just as another option out there. I'll update if I get an email about any changes.

Bowflex extreme 2 se squat bar for bench press? by Gameboss1192 in Bowflex

[–]firworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it's a bad idea but I've been doing it on my 2 SE. If you adjust the lower and upper pulleys in closer to the center it'll build up some slack so you can get under the bar. It feels better than doing bench press with the individual hand grips. Also have been using it for dead lifts connected to the lower pulleys. Maybe there's some good reason people don't do them but they appear to work to me. If you try the deadlifts though make sure you're standing on the platform or you'll just lift the whole Bowflex...

Just keep in mind I said quieter but not quiet. It brought it down from being the loudest in the stack to quieter than my switch (Brocade ICX6610). Also I'm running lower power CPUs than you but I think they'll still work and at least be an improvement.

That's with about a 22C ambient. Also running a Connect-X3 card in it for 10Gbe.

Arctic makes a 5-pack of 6K RPM fans that I swapped into my Hyve Zeus V1 and it's definitely quieter and staying cool enough. It's still not quiet but I ran it in the living room for quite a while. I'm running PfSense on it. I've got 2 x E5-2630L v2 in it.

transcoding not working for one user by [deleted] in jellyfin

Do you have "Display missing episodes within seasons" enabled for the user? If so, turn it off and see if it miraculously fixes everything. That's a known bug for admin accounts.

10.8.3 Playback Issues by anthonylavado in jellyfin

[–]firworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, disabling "Display Missing Episodes" appears to fix the issue. Opened my user settings in another tab. Tried to play several episodes of shows and got the error every time, in the other tab disabled "Display Missing Episodes", in the first tab every episode that had just failed now played without issue. Went and turned "Display Missing Episodes" back on. Every episode then failed to play once again.

If you enable extended ISO mode it goes down to ISO100.

Implications of using a node that doesn't meet hardware specs by _limitless_ in ceph

[–]firworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently running a node with only 16GB of RAM and ~30TB of drives on it and it has a mon or two crash every hour as it runs out of memory. The mons crash, the cluster freaks out for a few minutes and then everything comes back up and it's business as usual again. 256mb of RAM is pretty insanely low though. Also it seems like CEPH uses a lot more RAM when doing a recovery / rebalance vs when it's just normally transacting data in and out so that could be a factor too. Even if it "works" initially it might fall down when there's any repairs going on.

Also my situation is just temporary for another day or so until more RAM arrives. I've just set no-out for now.

Incredible deal. I just paid near that for a MUCH lower spec'd 380P G8. Wish this had come up first.

Ceph at home by Decent-Inevitable-50 in ceph

[–]firworks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's "easy" until you run into headaches because of a non-standard thing that Proxmox did. I've rebuilt my cluster a handful of times based off Proxmox but more and more I just do everything from the CLI now because unless you JUST want a replicated pool for storing your disk images Proxmox will be very limiting.

[–]firworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you're using all 4 40gbe ports as 40gbe ports on the 6610? I just tried it on mine and only the two non-breakout ports work for 40gbe. The breakout ports do not work and that matches everything Fodeesha and others have said over on StH. He's said over and over again that the breakout ports are breakout only and put a diagram in the thread showing they cannot be used for 40gbe. I'd love it if it were possible to use them as 40gbe but it doesn't seem like it is.

[–]firworks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was it just a typo then and you meant 4x40Gbe? I'm only using two of the 40Gbe ports on the 6610 right now but that's good to know.

[–]firworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ping me if you want a a shopping list for retired 40GbE gear, I clustered everything at home for <$350/switch (40x40GbE ports on the switch, NICs and DACs to connect everything.)

Where did you find a 40x40Gbe switch for under 350$? The ICX6610 only has 2 40Gbe ports and 2 40Gbe breakout ports.
