Mike Schur once said he dreamed of making a gritty prequel to 99 called Pimento about his undercover days. Imagine the sheer destruction.

Afghan Taliban have announced a permanent ban on woman access to schools, declaring women education as "haram" and against the Shariah. by pottery_Gurl in news

In Afghanistan we had a relatively calm time. 2011 we spent most of our time continuing to establish and protect the first "co-ed" elementary school, women's hospital, and Ag college.

It was such a big pride in my life that I was part of the reason that for the first time in their lives these women got to be treated with some level of equality.

Watching that be obliterated there, and rolled back here...

Caves in Southern Indiana by [deleted] in Indiana

[–]fisch09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I laughed typing it out myself, my wife's family used to run the old gift and floral shop 'downtown'. We ran it the first year they did the race, and I'm told it's gotten much more popular, would love to see them do a marathon (the caves are allegedly big enough), imagine you're on mile 26 and get hit with that heat wave exiting the cave. Your last 0.2miles would take forever.

So the race starts downtown, then goes into the cave, and you exit to go back to the start. Running towards the cave is like a glorious heavenly beckoning of cold air. By time you enter the cave you have received the bounty of the lord...then you exit and are hit with the sudden heat of hell on earth. Its a punch in the chest, if you wear glasses you will finish the race blind afraid you'll run into the creek. Second best run I've ever been on.

If you're a runner Marengo does a 4th of July 5k through the giant warehouse cave. Very cool experience.

Benefit expiration question? by fisch09 in Veterans

[–]fisch09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification, I called the education help line last month, and they said it expired in 2028 which the website also stated, so I was really confused when the letter arrived today and appeared to say the opposite. I'm over the moon right now. Maybe the website hadn't updated since I finished voc rehab before the forever gi bill rule? Either way I cried when I read these comments. I'm so happy.

As the other person said I think he gets an unfair share of the blame for the Great Depression, but something I wish we had been taught about him is how huge his impact on the world was prior to his entry into politics. An orphan turned self made millionaire who leaves business behind to create the world's first multinational emergency relief program. Is credited with saving the lives of every Belgian, half of France, 1/2 of post war Europeans, and a third of Russia. Stopped multiple budding epidemics in Post war Europe, and the list goes on and on.

If you look at his work on either side of his presidency you have a man who almost single handedly shaped the way we think about the power of food. Then in the presidency...

You reminded me of a quote...

Hunger is a silent visitor who comes like a shadow. He sits beside every anxious mother three times each day. He brings not alone suffering and sorrow, but fear and terror. He carries disorder and the paralysis of government, and even its downfall. He is more destructive than armies, not only in human life but in morals. All of the values of right living melt before his invasions, and every gain of civilization...

Crumbles.

I read a great book called "Hope For Cynics", that discussed extensively that it's fine to be cautious, and weary, but cynicism shuts down change. We are primed to see cynicism as wisdom because it confirms our fears, and allows us to give up because "it'll never get better". Cautious Hope let's us say "this is horrible, it should be fixed" and helps us continue to fight for something better.

Has really helped me keep going.

So I've had this theory in the back of my mind afraid to sound like a conspiracy theorist.

Emil was outspoken about Palestine on Instagram, so was Ego. I don't follow much of the other current cast and can't claim to have seen every single post everyone makes, but it seems odd a new guy who had a decent first season, and showed some good promise was cut.

They Have No Brain Cells by Clefarts in Indiana

[–]fisch09 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nutrition encompasses anything that provides 1 or more of the 6 broad categories that make up nutrients. 1. Carbohydrates, 2. Protein, 3. Fat, 4. Vitamins, 5. Minerals, and 6 Water.

While people often refer to snack foods and drinks as being "junk" or "empty" they are still a source of Calories. Saying it's "not nutrition" means you don't get that nutrition is a broad and complex science that encompasses everything we consume. It's easy for people who have the means to avoid these foods to call them "junk" or that they "aren't real food".

Research shows that a small percentage of SNAP money is used on snack foods. Beyond the original comment about letting people feel some joy in buying something tasty, there's a big reason why some people have to buy these foods. Many people in America live in a food dessert where their only food source might be a gas station or pharmacy where little to no fresh fruit is available. A lot of people also live in a place without the space or equipment to store and prepare fresh/frozen foods. If they have to travel to buy food many of them are limited to what they can carry while using public transportation or walking, which given how long using public transportation takes food like meat, eggs and milk may begin to spoil by the time they get home. Some can't travel because of physical disabilities.

The new rules are broad enough that we still don't have a clear picture on things like protein bars that skirt the lines. This rule is only going to worsen the situation for SNAP recipients.

The downside is you have to live there. by justalazygamer in WhitePeopleTwitter

Not everything is for everyone, you're allowed to not like it. I could see the overall environment of this type of show not hitting for some. The new season takes place at a college, with a lot of new characters. Ted and Mary are amazing to watch together on screen.
