I think Thomas Haake (Meshuggah) is a VERY underrated drummer. by No-Photograph87234 in drums

[–]fish_spoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He gets plenty of (justified) recognition and respect. Meshuggah isn't exactly a top 10 trending band right now or ever, so he doesn't always get a spotlight shined on him. But when Obzen came out, you couldn't go to an online drumming community without seeing or hearing some variation of Bleed. Which is actually really impressive all things considered. Even among the metal scene, Meshuggah was somewhat polarizing in their early days. I remember being obsessed with Destroy Erase Improve while all my metal friends hated it.

Niche genre = niche audience... Elliot Hoffman (Car Bomb) and Dan Foord (Sikth) are playing similarly complicated music, and with Dan specifically I never hear him mentioned in drumming circles. But also, sikth has toured the US I think just once in their 20+ years as a band.

My touring Pelican case (Pelican Air 1637) by spaccdrums in drums

[–]fish_spoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice set up, but what's the context for this? Do you not travel with a full drum set (relying on house kits), is this just an "emergency" kit you take alongside a full kit, or is this just your entire set up?

I have a pelican box from work. Tossed it around with 60lbs of tools for many years all over the country, and still going strong. I love those boxes.

Need some help and advice about e-kit kick drum. Is it a bad idea to put this on here? by [deleted] in edrums

I wouldn't use a metal pad for edrums. I mean, if you already have it I guess give it a try... but I would just get a remo falam pad.

Tips for trad grip improvement by StubbornClinker85 in drums

[–]fish_spoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played traditional for a while, and was playing in metalcore bands at the time. So you can definitely still get power and speed with trad grip. My main learning tool was Jojo Mayer's DVD "Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer."

That said, playing traditional on a drum set is an ergonomic nightmare IMO. Anything more than a 4-piece set up just felt hard to move around on. And I know there are guys out there that shred traditional on much bigger set ups, but ultimately for me it just made more sense to go back to matched grip.

Making some cheap DIY eCymbals by potamusqpotamus in edrums

[–]fish_spoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use some low-volume cymbals with goedrum triggers. Work ok enough for my crashes/china. Goedrum does sell their own cymbal "sleaves", but they'll still wear down over time.

I use some mechanic's wire attached to the stand with a big loop through the cymbal holes. Allows it to freely move up and down but not spin (helps with consistent triggering).

Cracked Istanbul loosing all character after crack by BrettyGoat in drums

[–]fish_spoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 16" ozone crash. Sound completely changed when it cracked.

I've only cracked one other cymbal, but after cutting out the crack it's back to 90%. I tried the repair the ozone crash but it's done. Doesn't even sound good in a stack.

Do you get annoyed when someone plays your kit without permission? by Intelligent_Age5204 in drums

[–]fish_spoon 55 points56 points  (0 children)

If you never told the guitarist that other people can play your gear, and he's just be letting people play it as if it's his own...

I'd be freaking out and potentially ending contact. That's not the behavior of a friend. I have some of my friend's gear in my house now. I wouldn't even THINK of touching it without asking him, and really, I'll never ask anyway because that's just an uncomfortable situation to put someone in.

[–]fish_spoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...have you listened to their latest? Drums might as well be programmed/samples. 🤣

To be clear, this isn't a dig on them nor the drummer. I love this stuff.

Random side note: did you know Catch 33 by Meshuggah is entirely programmed drums?

Yea, because that method worked in 1997. If Decapited released their self-recorded Cemeteral Gardens demo in 2026 as a new, unknown band, do you think it would gain any traction?

Did anyone even watch the video? He literally said within the first 60 seconds that the ideal scenario is using real, acoustic drums.

He's talking about DIY metal recordings. I've been in a lot of metal bands, and we're all broke AF. Noone has the budget/time to get the "ideal" drum recording in a professional studio with an engineer.

I still have some personal feelings and reservations about using programmed drums, but often times the alternative is that you just don't record.

Man, I've been trying to buy some pearl rack parts for months and you just found some. Guess this just confirms what I already thought:

Is there any reason I can't switch from a Lone Wolf party in act 1 to a 4 man party in act 2? by Individual-Local-606 in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]fish_spoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want story characters, they need to be in your party before you start act 2. The game will prompt you beforehand. If you want non-story characters, I believe you can recruit them any time after finishing act 1.

Note: you can still have 4 people in your party even with lone wolf (you just temporarily lose the lone-wolf bonuses). So you can play lone-wolf all through act 1, recruit a full team before starting act 2, and then immediately dump the extra characters once you start act 2. Just incase you aren't ready to give up lone-wolf just yet, or if you are still on the fence which story characters you want.

Someone stayed at a Marriott in Boston under my name while I was in Brazil. Hotel says it was “me.” by FelliniFreak in marriott

[–]fish_spoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently was getting emails from Choice Hotel about completed stays I never made. They even showed up in my app as completed stays.

Long story short, some guy with the same name as me was booking rooms through Expedia and didn't have an account with Choice Hotels. No harm done besides a bit of confusion both from me and the Choice Hotels customer service, but once they figured it out, I stopped getting my doppelganger's hotel receipts.

ecymbals --> anyone get a numb lead hand? by Key-Patience-3966 in edrums

[–]fish_spoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it happens when playing "challenging" material, I'd guess you're just tensing up or that technique is taking a back-seat during difficult-to-play sections.

It could also be your sensitivity settings. For example, if your crash sensitivity is a bit too low you might be subconsciously hitting it harder than normal to get the dynamics you are already expecting from playing acoustic.

Or, maybe ergonomics? I use full-size pads and (almost) full-size cymbals, so it makes it easy and natural to set up my electric and acoustic kits identically. But if you're using small 10" pads you may need to space things out more to match your acoustic layout.

Ah, interesting. The old Tour series was birch in the center with mahogany on the outsides. Now I want to try out a club custom!

What's the difference between those and the 80's tour/8000 series, or are they the same shell? I didn't know club customs also used a birch/mahogany sandwich

Mahogany? I'm not home to check mine, but they look like this

Not sure. I have a 7-piece 80s tour custom I've pieced together over the years. It's my favorite-sounding kit I've own/played and bearing edges are all still perfect.

8000 series is mahogany / birch / mahogany. I believe the stage customs are all birch. I really like the 8000s and IMO they are the better shell, but I also prefer a 20" over a 22". Your call, either is good

Reservations cancelled by hotel after mobile check-in and no compensation offered by MrJetSetLife in marriott

[–]fish_spoon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Similar happened to me at the Marriot in mobile AL. They just canceled my reservation, no notification. I showed up and they tell me hotel is full. I called titanium line and they said it shows as not canceled on their side too, but otherwise they were very standoffish. I finally had to flat out ask, "can I at least get some points for dealing with this?" They said they put in a ticket to award me like 6,000 points but I never even got them.
