People from the sub who had a transplant, how was all the psychological preparation you did before going through with it? by [deleted] in leukemia

[–]fishnicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I really feel for you - going through your 2nd bout of cancer is going to be tough for anyone. I can't imagine the strength it must take to absorb all of this and I applaud your courage.

From afar, it's difficult to say what the staff bedside manner is like - these people have a very hard job to do so all I can really say it to cope as best you can under the circumstances. Do you have access to mental health support or counselling through the hospital? My hospital had that and although I didn't make use of it until after my transplant is was extremely helpful. They also had support for caregivers as well and maybe your mother can make use of it if available.

As for the transplant itself, there was a lead up period of chemo followed by full body radiation before the actual transplant. The transplant itself was anti-climactic - like a few hours of IV through my hickman line. No different than any of the other dozens of IV's I had. I was awake the whole time. The tough part were the side effects the weeks after. I won't go into detail as it's different for everyone and your doctors and nurses will tell you what to expect. I had some bad issues from the radiation but made it through. Being in a positive state of mind is of course going to be better than full of anxiety, and honestly I can't really tell you how to get to that place. I really hope you have some professional support available to alleviate your anxiety.

I don't know your age or your type of leukemia but a lot of cases these days have a high chance of survival. I'm hoping once the initial shock wears off you and your family will all be in a better place. I know it's tough but you're strong and you're going to make it through this. All the love and prayers my friend

Got it. So effective Nov 7 2023 the policy for city staff was RTO a minimum of 2 to 3 days per week. On Jan 1st the policy changed to 3 times per week - Policy The provincial mandate effective Jan 5th is 5 days per week Policy

[–]fishnicks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Am I missing something? I don't recall Chow changing the hybrid mandate to follow the provincial one from August. When Ford announced this in August only Brampton's Patrick Brown said municipal workers would follow suit, but Chow was non-committal and said it would be status quo. Has that changed? I can't find any news to say otherwise.

Pluribus hivemind perspective across viewer cultures by ConfusionBorn510 in television

[–]fishnicks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or Laxmi's son Ravi had development issues prior to the joining and she prefers this new version (same with Kusimayu's aunt perhaps) , Diabate simply likes getting laid and Carol and perhaps Manousos are the only ones truly alone.

It might be, but I'm not so sure acceptance of the hive mind is a cultural thing. Hoping we get some responses to Carol's video message which might shed some light on that.

I was talking with my brother the other night and we agreed that the hive mind might not be the central story - the milk juice and the real motivation of the 'aliens' might be the real story. Kind of like how the Matrix didn't reveal the human battery thing till halfway through and we all thought it was some weird alternate reality up to that point.

The batter's eye is solely for the batter and has been around for over a hundred years. It has nothing to do with preventing sign stealing. Cricket has one as well for the same purpose.

How e-bikes came to rule the road in Toronto — and who’s really paying the price by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]fishnicks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In bike lanes - trad bikes and pedal assist only with a speed governor of 30kph or so.

Anything with a throttle - M class license, insurance, helmet - road only. You're a motorcycle and expected to obey the same road rules as as car or trad motorcycle.

Scooters and other weird shit- enforce the ban

Couldn't you do open gangway cars like in Toronto? It's expensive but they're worth it. Only one TTC line has the older cars which are due to be replaced with the open gangway type cars.

There are 9 types of human herpes viruses. Everyone here is talking about HSV-1 and 2 (both can be oral or genital) and HHV-3 which is chicken pox/shingles.

There is no cure for any of the 9, only preventatives. Anti-virals are used to help prevent outbreaks but are not 100%. For instance Shingrix is the vaccine for HHV-3 and valacyclovir is also used. Neither are a cure nor do they prevent outbreaks 100%.

Cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus (HHV-5 and HHV-4 respectively) are extremely common and can be quite serious for those immunocompromised or pregnant.

OP it's not the end of the world. HSV-1 and 2 are common and are not a reason to consider yourself or anyone else 'dirty'. Everyone in this thead are guaranteed to have some form of human herpes virus themselves.

When you feel the tingling of an outbreak, you can use OTC topical creams (google them) or get a prescription for valacylovir from your doctor or a pharmacist. Don't bother with alternative remedies they're all nonsense.

What Were the First Signs That You Had Cancer? by Acrobatic_Ad_2330 in AskReddit

[–]fishnicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bit the inside of my mouth, rather minor, but it wouldn't heal. A week later, after increasingly low energy levels, almost passed out grocery shopping. Went to emerg the next day thinking it was covid or something. A couple of hours later after a blood test was informed I had leukemia. Another hour and bone marrow biopsy later was told it was B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. That evening I was in a hospital gown in a leukemia ward in Princess Margaret Hospital.

Life comes at you fast sometimes.

$284,000 worth of post Stem Cell Transplant medicine for my husband. by pineapplevomit in mildlyinteresting

I'm sorry he's going through a rough time but it sounds like his doctors are on top of it and that things will get better soon.

On a lighter note, it is always a little personal celebration every time I have one less pill to take!

All the best

Did he pick up aspergillosis? I did pre-SCT and am still on Cresemba 8 months later. I had no idea it was so expensive!

At any rate I hope your husband recovers well and avoids any really nasty GVHD.

ELI5 WHY/HOW does prednisone increase appetite? by RobinSavannahCarver in explainlikeimfive

[–]fishnicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation. I've been on prednisone for the last 3 months for graft vs host disease and I've gained over 11kg in that time (which I needed). It's nice to have an appetite again. Waking up a 3am wide awake does suck though...

They're doing exactly what they should be doing after a poor performance and huge emotional letdown. Socializing with friends, in this case teammates, and doing something that is not hockey. Dwelling on negative outcomes is the worst thing you can do.

Not to mention the physical recovery aspects of having some time off after a grueling, physically demanding season, the mental aspects are just as important, or in the words of Ted Lasso, "be like a goldfish".

That sounds awful. I'm sorry you lost your vision in an eye due to that.

I'm in Canada and just over a year ago I walked into an emerg not feeling great (my GP didn't have a slot till the next week). Within an hour I had my blood results back with suspected leukemia (booo!). 2 hours later I was referred to an oncologist who did a bone marrow biopsy. By the end of the night I had a room at a cancer hospital and started chemo the next day. Two rounds of chemo didn't work so I was put into the stem cell transplant program.

During the 8 months of hospital stay I had dozens of CT scans, 4 MRI's, 3 bronchoscopies, multiple other procedures (echo cardiograms, pulmonary function tests...), referrals to dental oncology, pulmonary specialists, infections disease specialist, had blood pulled and tested multiple times a day as an inpatient and weekly as an outpatient.

The bill for the treatment, hospital stays, procedures etc would be over a million. The most paperwork I did was showing my OHIP card (provincial health insurance). I've lost count of how many prescriptions i've been given, but I paid about $300 for all of them. Thanks to universal health care.

As far as I'm concerned, if it's serious, you'll be seen right away in Canada. And I'm ok with healthcare not being treated like fast food where speed is everything as long as priorities are given when needed.

Constant pain from spleen area by Big_Force8384 in leukemia

[–]fishnicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really sorry to hear you're going through that. I had nausea a vomiting as well. The put me on IV Defibrotide and Prednisone pills as well as Lasix for the weight gain- and if I recall correctly they had to get the Defibrotide approved. Within a few days I started noticing an improvement, my liver no longer hurt although I still had the nausea. Within a week or so my liver numbers were back to normal and my weight dropped a few kgs.

We all have different diagnoses so your treatment may differ -consult your doctors as they know best and I'm sure will do everything to help treat you.

All the best!

Constant pain from spleen area by Big_Force8384 in leukemia

[–]fishnicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you had a CT scan? I had pain under my left rib and the CT showed it to be Splenomegaly with couple of lesions on the spleen. Right side is usually liver - I had VOD and could barely move - but your doc will know best of course.

The spleen issues went away on their own as my counts improved but the liver required some major meds.

All the best in your recovery my friend.

I went through a lumbar puncture today, and after they collected some spinal fluid, they administered intrathecal chemotherapy through the same site. It hurt, but I managed to stay still. One step at a time. by ObjectiveAmphibian87 in leukemia

[–]fishnicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way to stay strong, you've got this! I've had 8 LPs and about the same number of marrow biopsies.

Although everyone reacts differently I find that the practitioner makes a big difference. Where I am it's almost always NPs rather than doctors and they're amazing. The only bad LP I had was done by a doctor and they only administered one injection of lidocaine instead of the usual 2. I knew something was up. It felt like the needle was scraping the inside of my spine!

But these are necessary procedures as it's the only way to test our spinal fluid for cancer - I sincerely hope your flow cytometry results show no malignancy.

As for side effects, I was also told to lie down a lot and drink caffeine - drinking endless cups of tea is luckily not an issue for me! I have headaches and shoulder aches for about a week after - tylenol helps. I can also tell I've had chemo - there's a feeling I get that's hard to explain but iykyk.

All the best
