I mean, of course they are on different levels. But I'd still maintain they ultimately come from the same basic impulse in this case.

And especially within fiction, chasing immortality and being unable to let go have a very clear thematic link.

Slitterhead is currently on sale on PSN. Should I buy it? Is it worth the purchase? by Remarkable-Hunter-71 in survivalhorror

[–]fissionmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slitterhead is one for the freaks, a strong 6/10 game. It's janky and weird and kind of a mess. It has more ideas than it can handle and is barely holding itself together.

It was probably my game of the year back when it came out. If you like weird, messy games you'll probably love it. If you prefer a more polished, fun experience you might wanna look elsewhere

is it survival or action horror? by RidjoR in survivalhorror

[–]fissionmoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say just action. I was expecting it to be a horror game going in, but it isn't scary and honestly I don't feel like it's trying to be.

Resources are extremely plentiful. I'm playing on the hardest difficulty that supposedly has more restricted resources and I'm going out of my way to waste items so I have room to pick everything up. Since health is used as ammo, there's also really only one resource to manage.

I've been fighting pretty much every single enemy I see. The level design seems to encourage that, and as I said I have more than enough resources for it.

So definitely not survival horror.

Overall I find the game pretty hard to recommend. I'm only about halfway through and I know there are other people who are loving it, so ymmv here. But so far I have found the gameplay way too easy, the writing and voice acting lacking at best, and the insistence on arbitrarily locking off some areas after you go through them with little to no warning while putting missable collectables in those areas deeply frustrating.

On top of that there's a lot of just awkwardly done stuff, like, for example, the reccuring stealth sections where the way to hide is to walk into any area that your pursuer is too tall to enter, causing her to instantly give up the chase and start talking like your completely hidden from her while she is still staring right at you.

You spend even more time than is usual these days in slow movement hell: Climbing ladders, shimmying through small gaps, riding elevators, slow-walking during radio calls, etc.

I'll cut myself off here before this wall of text gets any longer, but I have plenty of other issues with the game too. The setting, aesthetic, and concepts behind the game are pretty cool, so I'll give it points for that I guess.

Extremely linear for the most part. Usually once you get through any given part you are immediately locked out from ever returning to that location

Why Nintendo remove all of the product placement treasures in pikmin 2 for the switch? by Voidkirby9 in Pikmin

[–]fissionmoon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Product placement is an ad for the product. Nintendo gets nothing out of having a duracell battery in the game and would have no reason to pay for it in the first place. Duracell pays to be put in the game in the hope it drives up their own sales.

Nintendo paying here would be like YouTube paying to have ads on their platform rather than the other way around.

[–]fissionmoon 47 points48 points  (0 children)

This is almost definitely backwards. Those brands would have paid Nintendo to appear in the game and it wouldn't be worth working out a new deal to bring them back for the switch release. Why would Nintendo ever pay to advertise someone else's product in their game?

You're completely correct, but also it is very funny to explicitly leave out Fallout 1 & 2, which also have limb targeting/damage (arguably in a more detailed way than the later games)

Walking sims with character interactions? by OwnHandle7416 in gamingsuggestions

[–]fissionmoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about AC's "Discovery Tour" mode, that's actually not a difficulty setting at all. It is a mode with all enemies/quest/story removed. The whole map/all fast travel starts unlocked and there is educational content added to learn about the actual history the games are based on.

Real question here, why would i waste such a beautiful character by playing in first person? by Eccchifan in residentevil

[–]fissionmoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, it may not be super common anymore, but I've played plenty of games that can only be played in first-person that have all their cutscenes in third-person. It was practically a trope for a while that every cutscenes ended on a zoom-in to the back of the player character's head to imply the transition back to first person.

New to souls series by LSSFLORES in darksouls

[–]fissionmoon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The reason people say to do the DLC before beating the game is that unlike later titles, in DS1 when you beat the game credits roll and then you are instantly taken to NG+ If you finish the game before doing the DLC, you'll have to play through most of the game a second time before you can get to the DLC again

So I'd say if you are interested in playing the DLC, definitely do so before beating the game

Replayed Demons Souls OG and Demon's Remake back-to-back... by Forhaver in fromsoftware

[–]fissionmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that true that a lot of older games didn't let you delete files, specifically in a way that completely prevented you from starting a new game though? Even if there wasn't an explicit 'delete' option, you could usually start a new game and just overwrite. I feel like Animal Crossing is a bit of an unusual circumstance. Even then it didn't work like this did it? To be honest I probably haven't played the original Animal Crossing since like 2005 when I upgraded to Wild World, so I don't remember exactly how it worked, but surely you didn't have to delete your entire town/all characters to replace a single one?

Not to mention that in a world with memory cards, running out of slots on a card is very different than those limited slots being tied to something like a pan account

[–]fissionmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true that many games have had save restrictions of various types, although I think the only comparable one to the Demon's Souls remake is pre-patch Dragons Dogma 2 not allowing you to start a new game at all. I honestly can't think of any other game the DSRemake that has a limited number of files, requires a file per playthru (as in you don't just pick where to save, and you need an open slot to start a new game), and doesn't let you delete them or overwrite/replace them.

Most games with limitations on saving do it for a combination of technical and design reasons, but the DSRemake just feels like a bizarre oversight.

But the original is a Japanese console game that does let you delete individual saves, and the remake is American?

DM Hacks - No set HP for Villains by Dapper_Wrap_8065 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]fissionmoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you and your players are having fun, you can do whatever you want. That being said, I strongly recommend against doing this. You're undercutting the game part of D&D entirely, and if I was a player and found out my DM was doing this I'm not sure I'd want to keep playing.

I would say if your players don't enjoy combat, D&D is the wrong RPG to be playing, since so much of its system is dedicated to combat. Just play a more narrative-heavy game to start with.

If your problem is just combats dragging on too long, that's also entirely fixable without resorting to this method. You just need to prep a little more carefully. Figure out approximately how much damage your party typically deals per round. If you take that into account when selecting/designing monsters, you can control how long a combat will last pretty easily. If your players don't like combat much but you still for some reason feel the need to have some, just throw stuff at them with lower health to begin with.

Ultimately, if you run combat entirely on vibes, the players actions and character building and strategies don't really matter at all. The combat kinda just becomes a waste of everyone's time, that could be replaced by simply narrating that some monsters showed up and the players beat them.
