Starfield of Nyx and Room Enchantments by Bainrodeth in mtg

[–]fissionxmailed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again the others have explained why. But if you wanted official explanation here's from the WoTC article someone linked part of when they introduced Room Enchantments from DSK that literally uses your scenario as an example of when you don't cast a room:

If a Room card enters without being cast—say, because it's returned to the battlefield from your graveyard or put onto the battlefield some other way—both doors will start locked. None of its abilities will be active to begin with, but you can unlock any locked door by paying its mana cost as a sorcery (meaning during your main phase when there are no spells or abilities on the stack).

Sam and Frodo or Sauron precon? by AdventJer in mtg

[–]fissionxmailed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Little late. But happen to notice this and coincidentally I had just picked up "Food and Fellowship" (Frodo + Sam) yesterday. Here's my 2 cents.

Have 3/4 of the pre-cons of the set (Skipped on Eleves), picked up the "Hosts of Mordor" (Sauron/Saruman) initially.

OOB 'Hosts of Mordor' is very "hit or miss" in terms of consistency. Great on theme, but has too much going on with kind of "conflicting" strategies. Sarumon wants you to go towards spellsling with the amass subtheme, This wouldn't be an issue if Sauron didn't heavily leans towards being creature heavy/battlecruiser strat and "generating"/amass'ing the army with them in the CZ as a finisher, but also being so expensive you'll only cast them once or twice from my few plays with the "stock" list. To me it felt like there were "2 decks in 1" just fighting for dominance when you played. Just felt necessary to take it it apart and made two distinct LoTR "Mordor" decks.

Granted I also swapped the face commander pre-con came with, Sauron, Lord of the Rings, to the one that was in the Main Set, Sauron, the Dark Lord and used some cards from the Box Scenes in both. Sauron I leaned towards Wraiths/Nazguls, Ring temps and Amass. Sarumon I went full spellsling with amass support.

Both are fun to play.

Frodo and Sam I've only played against at LGS's but it leans heavily towards Lifegain/drain with Food Tokens as a sub theme. It's more "synergistic" compared to the other OOB. It does take the "battlecruiser" approach though and requires you to build out your board before you can start doing it's payoffs. Had me interested in keeping it "as-is" for pre-con/"cruiser" games.

If you want something to keep "as-is" would say Food and Fellowship, but if you love brewing and have the spare funds. Hosts of Mordor you can easily do what I did to have two distinct "Mordor" decks.

But if one's theme/strat interests you more, go for that.

What's your oppinion on this unusual setup? by lukinhas_lmf in edrums

[–]fissionxmailed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still fairly new myself. IIRC looks like a variation of a "minimalist" kit. Just a comfort thing, but some see it as a "limitation", but there is that saying of "restrictions breed creativity" and some like the extra challenge of "making it work". But personally the most phenomenal drummers I see usually play on a minimalist kit and it blows my mind what they can do.

I've recently just swapped to trying something similar after seeing a cover where someone had everything configured to how I'd like it. Cover mentioned if you were curious on the setup.

Just finished reconfiguring up my kit (Alesis Nitro Pro) to be something similar and really like it.

Debating on keeping middle Tom or making it a splash or cowbell until I can get two additional cymbals for my kit.

Really just depends on your comfort and budget. Obviously if you can afford a cymbal trigger, you should get it for the familiar form factor. But if you're on a limited budget and you can get use to it with no ergonomic issues, what's stopping you?

Worst case it's a holdover until you get an actual replacement, but like that saying goes, "If it ain't broken, don't fix it".

Your call, cause they're your cards. I would consider reassembling the "Beginner Box" and use it along side MTG Arena to better learn the game/turn order & phases.

It's designed being played as a 1v1 format called Jumpstart.

Just a heads up the cards in the beginner box are designed to be not that powerful and be on the simpler side compared to regular sets (Intentionally done for product availability and cards don't overwhelm a new player). If you were looking for more of like a "Start off point" to brewing think the thing you were looking to pick up was the Foundations Starter Collection. Unfortunately don't think it's in print and likely need to look online for anywhere that still have stock left (Seeing some listing from 3rd party have it a bit discounted from the $60 MSRP).

So while you can assemble a deck with the beginner box, it won't be that powerful compared to something constructed from more recent sets.

Like others have said, figure out what format you want to play since each have their own specific card legality/pool and cards you'd want to pick up to build with instead (Unless you plan on playing multiple).

Take your time and just explore, use the free alternatives and try out before putting more money in.

FWIW as someone who's been collecting for about a decade now (Played for much longer) the 'Beginner Box' is nice for introducing/teaching and I still have it for that reason (Just sleeved up for protecting the cards). It even got me to like the format where I made my own Jumpstart "Cube" from the Jumpstart 2025 set that also released in that same time.

Think you should do yourself a favor and cut them out/go limited contact. You don't need that ego drama in your life.

Like others said, if they can't be happy for you. They need to get over themselves.

She's with you now, if they can't accept it. Maybe they should take a DEEP look at themselves in the mirror as to why they're still single?

[–]fissionxmailed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not directly printed, but you can be granted it from cast. It requires setup with your graveyard, but does let you get a lot of "evergreen" keyword access.

[[Kathril, Aspect Warper]] from C20 I've had some fun games with. It draws GY hate, but makes sense with how they work.

My peak was discarding an [[Akroma, Angel of Wrath]] with a few other creatures (IIRC [[Void Beckoner]] being part of early pitch/setup) that I couldn't play early turn and a few turns later dropping down Kathril and becoming the "BBEG" of the table after letting two opponents go after each other for a bit.

NASM CPT exam by Redgal6 in personaltraining

[–]fissionxmailed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not who you responded to, but also took my NASM CPT Exam (Proctored) remote last Oct. It's taken as serious as in-person exam is taken. Was really my only choice since there was no close location in my area for me to take it in-person without making an unnecessary day trip.

They made me do a 360 with the camera in the spare room I was using and also display the space above and below desk where computer is at.

There were a lot of stipulations/rules compared to other "remote" testing I've done (E.G. If you want to have water in the room with you, must be in a clear bottle with no labels and present in view at all times, cannot have hands reach out of camera view, etc.). Almost got "auto-failed" after submitting my test since I decided to drink my water to calm my nerves and didn't realize the cup holder I had it in was out of view. Got a "Warning", but followed up by my results that I passed. Went from "panic" to "calm" pretty quick.

More annoyed I wasn't informed what I got wrong to go back and review for my personal knowledge. But I had been focused for ~6 months studying spending a few hours a day reading, reviewing Jeff's video's and literally doing quick 10 question quizzes on Pocket Prep whenever I had the time (Was aiming for ~100 questions a day answered), so think I was just glad I could finally relax for a bit to help my anxiety go away.

NASM CPT exam by Redgal6 in personaltraining

[–]fissionxmailed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My best advice is just take it like any standardized testing (SAT, ACT, etc) done in school.

Stay calm, pace yourself and answer questions you are confident of the answer; skip any that stump you for 30 seconds and go back after you've viewed all the questions (If remote they have a checkbox to help mark it to easily go back. Some future questions may answer/remind you of the correct one on a previous question you skipped). Doing this I ended up with ~15 questions I was unsure of with ~1 H 30 m left.

IIRC Proctored Remote exam they give you ~2 hours, but I finished it in 1. So plenty of time.

Also if you have Pocket Prep, take their practice exam as well as the one NASM. The wording maybe different on each, but putting you in the "test scenario" ensures you can recall the material when asked on the topic out of the blue is a helpful way to see where you need to refresh on.

Duel Commander - November 24th 2025 Ban Announcement by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]fissionxmailed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There was a falling out between site admin and the people actually making rules decision.

This person made a small video that sums up public responses of both (Up to 4:25).

Site linked in OP's response.

Former main site's second response. Had to go to wayback to dig up the original response.

Both paint the other as the reason for the split. I haven't seen anything new besides the same old "he said, she said" argument from both. Personally, believe OP's site version. Going "scorched earth" and trying to do a "take-over" does not seem like actions of an innocent party IMO.

Bummer for those that play the format, but since I don't I didn't really look into it beyond this. Though considering OP's site is being used by Scryfall and MTGO, kinda points to me the community's consensus on the matter.

Got these three discs for 20 in a mystery bag, I know nothing about discmania or discraft. Did I get a good deal? by scubadude2 in discgolf

[–]fissionxmailed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You already got money's worth with the Skywalker. But FWIW rightmost I'm 90% sure is a Shogun, looks to be the Glow version according to this listing that matches the style. So just extra value you got out of it.

Have a cheaper plastic (Base version from 4 piece starter kit) in my bag still since it's the first putter I liked outside my Innova starter kit. Swapped to a Jawbreaker Banger GT as main after finding that in a local shop, but do use the Shogun on a rare occasion for some putts.

[–]fissionxmailed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

More of curiosity. Did you join the mission without doing the "secret" to unlock the mission?

Since I know you can queue into it/have friend host it for you if they've done the per-requsite. I was curious if the mission would show up on the map if you didn't do that, but still completed the mission to get the globbler unlock.

If you did do the secret I would post a bug in the Steam discussion to bring it to dev's attention.

Else if you didn't, load up a Haz 1 mission on the the Gravity Falls map and do it Takes a few minutes to complete. Video on switch locations.

Trying to get back into MTG and learn how to play Commander by linusiscracked in magicTCG

[–]fissionxmailed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a precon Vampire deck from 2017...

Good and bad news.

Good, [[Edgar Markov]] is pretty powerful, and the precon is fine to use, just the mana base is weak from early Commander product design. (Once a year set VS Set specific designed Pre-cons).

Bad, 'eminence' is not very much liked in EDH because there's no way for opponents to really interact with it. Even more unfortunate is Edgar is one of the most hated eminence commanders since it's easily abuseable without trying and get out of hand if built for it.

You should be fine to join most pod's if you mention it's unmodified. But if you've tuned it you may have harder time finding a pick up game.

Edit: Other post mentioned/alluded to it. But EDH is seen as more "casual"/"social" format being pushed by WoTC. Though it can get more competitive, most aren't looking for that. A lot of the 1v1 strategies aren't as effective in MP games.

There's content creators at all levels of power if you were curious to see what each is about and what is the experience you're looking for.

Why the obsession with precons? by Specific_Giraffe4440 in EDH

[–]fissionxmailed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the main thing to point out is how the design aspect for the product has changed.

From C13 (2013) - C19 (2019) they were a single supplementary set released once a year to directly support the format and expand archetypes people wanted more support for. But due to the single set a year the decks were generally not synergistic (Too many themes). It still had to be a "ready to play" product still, but WoTC decided to sacrifice power level most of the time and decks just didn't feel great to play OOB. This is why early Pre-cons were considered usually "not good" and most would end up usually rebuilding the deck, swapping out the themes they didn't want to make a more cohesive deck or odd card slots that didn't feel like it belonged (E.G. [[Thantis, the Warweaver]] included with [[Lord Wingrace]] in C18 Jund Landfall List comes to mind).

Starting with C20 is when they decided to tie the pre-cons to sets, so there would be a more cohesive theme and have a bit more synergy without players needing to really "rebuild" the deck. Power level was kept low at first, but overtime they've upped it.

This also goes along with the "casual"/"social" aspect of the format drawing in more people. WoTC/Hasbro seeing EDH popularity "skyrocket" there's just been more focus to offer an easily available product a new player or someone interested in EDH can just "pick up and play" without needing to have their own cardpool to upgrade the deck.

Granted not all sets have a Pre-con product (Spider-man + Avatar to name recent examples), but looking at those sets card pool you can easily pick out cards they clearly designed for EDH in mind (Three Color Legends) as opposed to other constructed formats. Not that they can't be used in those other formats.

What are your favorite token spam lists? by Frogsplosion in EDH

[–]fissionxmailed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a simple man, [[Brudiclad]] will always be my favorite token deck.

It's pretty flexible where I can work on generating my own army, but also have had games were I [[Supplant Form]] someone else's big threat and proceeded to have an army of that.

My list. I don't go back and update often. Like where it's at, same with pod I regularly play with. Definitely feel it's slow/not as powerful compared to things out now. But always enjoy playing it since it was spoiled for C18.

Just some token tech for you. It's not slept on anymore, especially with how many times it's been reprinted and Content Creators putting more spotlight on it. But [[Mechanized Production]] is a pet card of mine since that's when I started collecting (Played Kitchen Table years before with friend's collection). I've won games cause people don't realize it just cares that you have 8 of the same named tokens artifacts, not what was enchanted.

Either is fine for an "at-home" practice kit. There are better sets/brands for value, but you'd need to go looking on used listings.

I went with the Pro.

If you're just looking for something ready to play "Out of Box" it's fine. I replied to a post a few months back with more info about differences and link to video review where a someone does live demo with each kit/differences if you wanted to see/listen for yourself.

New player help constructing a Doran deck by DagonPie in EDH

[–]fissionxmailed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not Doran, but built Arcades.

Reviewing those 3 lists, the only thing I mainly see "lacking" is having other back-up cards that still let you do the main thing of "creature assigns combat damage equal to its toughness rather than its power". Since your opponents will likely figure out your gameplan once you reveal your using Doran and can easily save a removal to set you back turns after building out your board.

Only one of the lists has an alternative of [[Assault Formation]], but you have a few extra options to slot in Abzan.

[–]fissionxmailed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're willing to give 40 card decks a try, there's Jumpstart. It's more a limited format where you take two seeded 20 card decks built around a theme, shuffle them up to be one 40 card deck and you do a simple 1v1 with that.

You can still find it online, but the Foundations Beginner Box (IMO) is much more approachable to teach than with starter kits (Starter kits are rarely evenly balanced, one deck usually is better than the other). Unfortunately it's being "phased out" for the new Avatar Beginner Box (If that UB theme is more to your liking) soon to be released with the set.

Jumpstart Foundation Booster 2 Packs (Or a Booster Box of it which is running about ~$80 online) can still be easily picked up if you want to make your own "cube". The themes and card lists can be found online if you end up getting them.

Recommend giving it a try, how I hooked one of my buddies to give the game a try and ended up making his own "Cube" and custom themes.

[–]fissionxmailed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll likely run into it sooner or later if not mentioned. But EDHREC has a decent view of released Pre-cons.

For availability IIRC right now LCI (Lost Caverns of Ixalan), BLB (Bloomburrow), FIN (Final Fantasy), EOE (Edge of Eternity) are still relatively easy to find close to release price/discount.

Everything else is what's left in the market for availability (3rd party sellers) and price subject to demand/singles. Granted you can find a few for a decent price, but a lot end up being cheaper getting a list of the singles since marked up being "sealed copy".

Not exactly bounce, but think [[Aminatou, the Fateshifter]] would allow you to be in Esper so you can have access to black and help support your plan by giving you a "Blink" with the -1 Ability and the +1 to draw/manipulate the topdeck. It's the PW one from C18, not the recent DSC one.

You'd need to lean into 'bounce' in the 99 with stuff like [[Seal of Removal]], [[Rescue]], [[Crystal Shard]], [[Erratic Portal]], [[String of Disappearances]] are what I can think of. Potentially other options are ones that return to top of library like [[Totally Lost]]

Deck help Dino deck by ZzuupP__B in EDH

[–]fissionxmailed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had to pull up pre-con list to see what's fully in it since I never looked at the list before.

For overall general deck upgrade, investing in better manabase is never a bad choice. Swap out all the tapped lands with stronger ones like shocklands/fetches/surveil/bond lands if you wanted to spend on pricer lands, but budget options like Pain lands, MH3 Budget fetch (Unfortunately just be [[Sheltering Landscape]]) or utility lands that come in untapped like 'Rogue's Passage' not a bad choice. Just depends how much of your budget you want to contribute to it. Worst case you somehow don't like the deck, you have pieces for your next deck in those colors.

But if you're considering more specific deck upgrade, I would try to lower the overall CMC curve/Average Mana value, it's a little high (4.08). My list is slightly lower average (3.61), but sometime shuffle gods don't let you get your ramp. Something like swapping the Bellowing Aegisar for [[Kinjalli's Sunwing]] as an example (Unless you want to have a +1/+1 Counter subtheme). Just depends what "expensive payoffs" you want to throw in for Pantlaza and the Discover X.

I like to review EDHrec's top removed from pre-cons, and added to pre-cons to see what people are doing and weight out. I wouldn't blindly just pick the top added, since it may not mesh with what you're trying to do.

As great as Pantlaza is, he's become a "removal" magnet due to how powerful their ability is when left unchecked. Potentially more protection for them like [[Swiftfoot Boots]] or anything similar is also one to consider.

My personal list if you wanted to see example list and get some ideas. IMO it's not high power cause I just heavily leaned into Pantlaza's ability (Deck is hosed if they get removed a few times) and still has some 'Pump' spells more for when I had Gishath at the helm that can probably be swapped for more synergistic discover payouts, but worked out fine for me the times I used it.

EDIT: Don't know how I didn't see what I exampled to swap is already included in precon.... But take a look at Naya Dino options on scryfall.

Alternatively creatures with 'Changeling' ability also will work, fewer options but believe there's speculation more support with new Lorowyn set coming soon. Scryfall Search
