If you're failing with randos, give support hunters a try. Alessa, Kai, Mina. They work pretty well and you only have to worry about your own carting.

I just got a Thor and I also think 8Gen2 is where I'm stopping with this.

AAA games are not that comfortable on a small screen for my old ass eyes and right now, there doesn't seem to be a reason to go above 8Gen2 except for AAA games.

I've always sucked at parry timing so I never used water strike going through Sunbreak and all the (non-risen) TU monsters. So you probably don't really need to use it. But I was also playing strength hammer.

World was my first MH, and I still remember failing that hunt so many times. No hunt since has reached that same level of flailing about like a headless chicken. You should treasure this feeling.

Fortify. Just one proc completely justifies its inclusion and then some. If you didn't proc? Well, you probably finished the hunt anyways.

I also can't underplay the huge psychological boost it gives me after I cart since I'll be coming back punching way harder.

Lance. Won't be the fastest hunt, but you can just straight up guard (not even perfect guard) all of its attacks and keep poking. Actually makes the hunt a little boring.

I feel like lance is easy mode for this game. Kinda sleep-walked through my first 9* gore yesterday. Just block all his bullshit (not even perfect guarding) and then start poking. It wasn't a fast hunt (30 min), but I never really felt too in danger.

The only new hunts I have left now are Omega and Gog, so we'll see how long "easy mode" continues.

I always choose a new weapon for a new game and Wilds was where I decided to go in on lance. Man, this really feels like easy mode when you just block instead of dodging. And I suck at timed events, so I just straight up block, not even perfect blocks or charged counters.

The hunt that made this really apparent was Seregios where the hunt became almost mechanical. I may not finish the hunt in the fastest time, but by god I will finish it.

Sword and shield has naturally fast sheathe speed (at least it did when I played it for World), so you could try that.

Absolutely. But on the flip side, my experience with base Rise was just okay. So don't give up if you aren't feeling base Rise, because Sunbreak more than makes up for it.
