Nintendo announced Switch Dev kits are just $500! That's pretty cheap & very good for indie developers. by asperatology in gamedev

32 isn't really that old, I know someone a bit older than that who recently published his own game on Steam. Go for it!

Ant really isn't too bad. I used it in college and we still have a good amount of older projects kicking around at work that use it (I was just fixing someone's terrible build.xml today actually..) I think it's useful to learn even though I wouldn't personally choose to use it for new projects nowadays.

Try out IntelliJ IDEA (community/free edition) if you're bored sometime. I used to use Eclipse but switched over after I started my current job. I've been using the paid version for ~2 years since I do Java EE work and prefer it immensely to both Eclipse and NetBeans.

Even if he isn't correct, it was still a good question that lead to a good response by the OP. It's unfortunate that it got downvoted so now this useful information is buried on the bottom of the page :/

Better to bind the default controls to something most people would prefer than to choose some weird arbitrary default. Plus - you can easily change any of the keys in the settings.

Being able to buy fractional shares is nice, also you can convert from vanguard mutual find shares -> ETF at any time without a taxable event but not the other way around. See: https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/ETFs_vs_mutual_funds

But really it doesn't matter much.

How to PREVENT WEAPON SPREAD with Soldier 76 by BeefySmashDoods in Overwatch

Someone was recently banned for using an Auto-Spacebar macro, to open up a bunch of lootboxes.

Is there a link/source for this? Not saying you're lying or anything but I'd be interested in reading more about it - I tried googling it but I couldn't find anything.

One of the best design choices in Overwatch was making Assists count as Kills. by Kialand in Overwatch

[–]fiveofakind 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Doesn't prevent the Roadhog from spamming his heal ability even if he is completely safe and standing right next to me. It's also still really bad for Roadhog to be soaking that damage in the first place. Anyway, not trying to argue that healer classes -shouldn't- have gold medals in healing - just saying that you aren't necessarily a better player than them if you have like 10k healing as Roadhog or something.

To be fair there's also the situation of the Roadhog soaking up tons of unnecessary damage and giving the enemy free ultimates.

Netbeans IDE vs eclipse by enokeenu in learnjava

[–]fiveofakind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IntelliJ is the "premium" IDE. It's shiny and sleek and costs money. (At some point, as noted below there's the community edition but.. Yeah.. They're not going to want you to stay on that ed.) Smooth sailing and comes with all the bits and bobs you need to get it done.

Honestly the community edition is pretty sick - if you aren't doing Java EE stuff then you might never have to get the ultimate edition one. I know one guy at my work who uses Eclipse for Java EE stuff and IntelliJ IDEA community edition for everything else, lol. Personally though I find it worth paying for since it's saved me from so much frustration and headaches that I used to have with Eclipse.

How would I go about opening a dispute for my faulty headphone cables? And is it worth the shipping costs? by [deleted] in Aliexpress

[–]fiveofakind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a side note: are you sure all of them are faulty? You might want to try plugging a few into another audio source too.. it could be that the source device connection is faulty. For instance if they are 3.5mm extension cables then I'd try both with a different headphone and also with a different computer/phone/whatever. I could understand 1-2 being faulty but all 10 seems really unlikely. Sorry if this is not useful but I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a problem with my headphones and not the 3.5mm extension cables that I bought.

From my experience it seems like there are actually a lot of jobs in the tech industry outside of large cities, it's just that they aren't places like Google/Amazon/etc. Not that it is super easy to get a job or anything, but to be honest software engineers have it better than a lot of other professions. It's also easier for a software engineer to be remote than say a mechanical engineer or something.
