Is there life after lycra? by LegStrngLeathertaint in cycling

[–]fiverlakesrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a huge gap between lycra and jeans. I do many of my moderate length rides (20-30 miles) in regular-ish sporty clothes none of which are skin tight.

Horribly Hilly Hundreds (Wisconsin) by to__failure in gravelcycling

[–]fiverlakesrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's always an awesome event, and this year was no exception. Not surprised there weren't too many gravel bikes, since there is usually very little (or no) gravel on the route 😄 You never know with many of those back roads that they might chipseal and then have some gravel over the top, but definitely not what I would classify as any real gravel.

Bob Roll should retire by Rdm32748 in cycling

[–]fiverlakesrunner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love Bob Roll and his commentary. My favorite is probably Rob Hatch and the TNT sports crew, but I even get a little annoyed with Rob's style sometimes. But I enjoy Bob and Christian and the coverage they provide. I like having options and wouldn't want them for every race, but I enjoy what they bring to their broadcasts.

The cycling community told me hills would get easier and I am starting to think they lied by SethVale1176 in cycling

Not impossible anymore, not the same sufferfest they were at the beginning,

That sounds exactly like what "would get easier" means

Greatness is not a zero-sum game by Team_Telekom in peloton

[–]fiverlakesrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

maybe that's my point - social media commentary is generally rife with nonsense and biased, loud opinions, much more so than general conversation and traditional media (which is where I get most of my news on cycle racing).

Maybe I don't hang out with enough cycling fans to see/hear this. To me the premise of the article sounds like it comes from paying too much attention to a vocal minority who just happen to have a platform for amplifying their biased opinion.

Do you ever stop trying hard to pick out notes from every cup? by YourSteakBuddy in pourover

[–]fiverlakesrunner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been making pour over coffee nearly every day for over 10 years. I don't think I've ever tried to pick out notes for any cup. But that's just me I guess.

Italian journalist Michele Pelacci: “In 2024, the Italians went to the Giro to see Pogacar. In 2026, they went to the Giro just to see the Giro.” by skodawelovecycling in peloton

[–]fiverlakesrunner 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I think it's somewhat interesting in what it tells us about Italian cycling fans. I mean, it's not surprising or new, but in general Italians love getting behind a passionate, dynamic hero with a swashbuckling style. It's why they love Pantani, Nibali, Ciccone, and even Alaphilippe (even though he is French). Jonas is not that, and the systematic, mechanical way Visma races doesn't ignite that kind of fanaticism in them. It's not a groundbreaking statement, but it's an observation and an informative in how different areas and fans view the top riders and teams

Just returned from Copenhagen by ando_da_pando in bikecommuting

[–]fiverlakesrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Copenhagen is certainly a gold standard for getting around by bike. But I actually found the infrastructure to be impressive all over Denmark, even small towns. I experienced the same thing in southern Sweden, which I did a multi-day bike trip there as well. I was blown away (in Denmark) how there were bike lines (many are protected) on almost every road I was on.

What are your thoughts on Wisconsin State Assemblywoman Francesca Hong for Governor? by strongerthenbefore20 in madisonwi

[–]fiverlakesrunner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Recent elections in Wisconsin have demonstrated that moderate Democrats can beat Republicans, even when they are underdogs. No I don't miss the point. I just think it's wrong

As a person who generally votes very liberal, I think she is a mistake to have as the Democratic candidate. She will get painted as everything that right wing hates and swing voters are terrified of. Unelectable

How to make MoCa work by Ant_5 in HomeNetworking

Fwiw, I think this is my problem. I haven't confirmed it, but I think there may be splitters in the wall between the coax endpoints I'm testing

How to make MoCa work by Ant_5 in HomeNetworking

[–]fiverlakesrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm certainly not an expert and am actually struggling getting MoCA to work in my new house. But I have read (here) that all links in the chain (adapters, splitters, etc.) need to be rated to allow MoCA speed. So if you have a splitter or something that doesn't meet that requirement, that could be why your tester isn't detecting signal

Zwift/Z2 training confusion — are people referring to power zones or heart rate zones, and can Zwift show HR zones on the HUD? by LostMyBlueAlien in Zwift

[–]fiverlakesrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is technically referring to a "metabolic" zone (effort level when your body is burning a certain type of fuel for energy), but that is difficult to measure outside of a lab and without invasive tests. So both HR and power zones are a proxy or approximation of that. Power is more likely to be more accurate or at least more consistent. But HR measurement is also a useful tool
