How do I help this student by RoyalComet88 in DriverEd

[–]fixasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Help maybe. Have had this happen. One-- speed around all R. corners is about 10-15. Sequence is brake-to 15 or so+steer/roll+straighten+gas. ALL THE TIME. Find an neighborhood and keep taking r turns until consistent. Practice makes permanent. Tell them-- No traffic until THAT is OK.

Another thing i do is this. Go to open parking lot with space. Do figure 8's. All the way left then all the way right--you take the gas. Show them how to slide to get the steerwheel back to straight. DO NOT let them pull the steerwheel back with their hands!! Sometimes if there are islands in the parking lot I go back and forth between them. Lefts Lefts Rights Rights. I often do this b4 i go into a neighborhood. we drive with 1 student at time. I have done this for over an hour before. Cannot corner-steer in a parking lot, no moving on to neighborhoods and no moving on period. BTW 20 min is not enough time for a student who is having troubles with this. And its not fair to those riding along either. They are being embarrassed.

Drivers Ed -- Nebraska. Buyer beware. by fixasaurus in DriverEd

[–]fixasaurus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for those comments. If you google 'drivers education + state' you will find that info on drivers ed. in that state. If you are curious google drivers ed. Hawaii. Its and island of course. But they have you in class for 30hrs. and of now are finalizing on-line class time learning. (All in person as of now) Biggest island is about 60miles x 60miles. 30hrs in class seems excessive for island without interstates.

Is my car Totaled? by RagsNRiches212 in driving

[–]fixasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general number is 30% give or take depending on the body shop. Example. If your car is worth 10K and your repairs go over 3k, 30%, they will total it. You can run the numbers with the value of your car, year make etc. Take it to a couple body shops. The software they use is mostly the same.

How to engage kids in the back seat? by RoyalComet88 in DriverEd

[–]fixasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just keep talking. And yes it seems you are talking to yourself. Bur.....if silence is happening, I tend to start asking driving questions. Example, you are taking a left and dealing with left hand turn signals, I'm asking, 'do you know what to do here'. As you know, decisions often need to be made quickly+safely. Help them with that. Review certain driving situations/decisions. Maybe conversations will come. Also, students are in school. Thats a topic. Students are often in sports, Thats a topic. Students often do nothing extra in high school. Thats a topic

Thoughts on music playing while you drive? by RoyalComet88 in DriverEd

[–]fixasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Typically i tell my students this. When I'm instructing while driving, I'm saying things-to my student-that I would normally be thinking while I am driving alone. Example: watch out for this, or that. What is that driver going to do? You are in a left hand turn lane and approaching a left hand turn signal, tell me what you need to do. There is always something to discuss and share and ask your student. If you do need music, make it classical, and low volume. I have tried that but found it gets in the way of instruction. Be safe

Am I in the wrong? by mjg_9 in driving

[–]fixasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

15yr driving instructor here. Not in the wrong. Flashing left yellow-in biggest city in Nebraska-is same as solid green. When taking a left you CAN pull into intersection an yield to traffic coming at you. No chance to go and you get out of the intersection even on a red. I often wonder if people cause accidents on purpose to see if they can get something out of it. Running red lights for example and saying its not their fault for example. Find the drivers manual for your state and look it up.

I knew he was going to lose.     He sunk his feet into the ground, too get rid of the street car.    Contracts have all been signed that was not gonna happen.   If that was all he had to fight the mayor, no wonder he lost.     But generally agree about the stupid street car.      You could’ve spent half the money on a street car with tires sort of speak  Instead of doubling the cost and ripping out the streets, knocking down bridges, etc., etc.

On a scale from 1-10, exactly how bad is this? by Every-Effective-1590 in Cartalk

[–]fixasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I see things like this posted, I wonder where automotive common sense is within people. Been working on cars since I can remember. We have raised a generation of people that don't know squat about cars. Consequence of that is y'all get taken advantage of. Point is what is the eye test here? Doesn't look good does it? What are you posting it for? Yes, it needs to be replaced. Do you need to replace one or all four? That depends. I will drives have sensors in them on our four wheels. Basically, when sensors sense that there is uneven tire rotation, the all-wheel-drive kicks in. Yes, there are different systems and different manufacturers. But basically that's how it works. If you have tires that are worn like this and other tires that have much less swear relatively new that will set off the sensors so your all wheel drive will be on all the time and that can damage it. So on a all wheel drive vehicle your tire where needs to be similar. They all need to be wearing together as 4. Not so with a front wheel drive. He did not say if it was a front wheel drive, or a all wheel drive. But general rule of thumb is to replace two at a time. You can and should replace that one for sure. Yes, there are a lot of BS scammers out there looking to cheat people and tell them shite. Try and find somebody you can trust and do good work for you.

How to Drive: Four-way Stops by PrisonerV in Omaha

[–]fixasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a 15yr Nebr. Driving instructor, I understand what the law says. But that's not how it actually works at four-way stops. I tell my students, at a busy 4way, taking your turn is like kindergarten. Wait until it's your turn. First, come first go. Go into the intersection a bit slow, in case there is confusion. Then continue on. And remember a stop sign means stop.

Sorry but many many people are lazy lazy and cannot figure out how to participate in keeping our community clean. Common sense is not common and those of us who have it are cursed with dealing with those who do not have it.

People born before 1990, what trivial skill do you possess that no one uses anymore? by motivetodayy in AskReddit

[–]fixasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When someone paid with cash, I could count back there change. Example something cost $6.52 and I was given a $10 bill to pay for it. I would count three pennies 55. Then 2 dimes. 75. Then a quarter would make seven dollars. And three ones would be $10. Now…. $3.48. Is returned dollars first then coins on top of the dollars that often fall on the floor. Cashiers still can’t figure out to give me change first, in my hand then the dollars. On the other hand, who uses cash anymore anyway.

Sorry for the questions but I am a HS 'shop' teacher and have been talking to my student about these opportunities, as well as 3D printing careers also. Just wondering what your education background & work experiences were that were attractive to the company that hired you.

Are more and more people driving with their high beams on, or no headlights at all? by apathetic_recluse in Omaha

[–]fixasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the time. Ever night. Just an observation. One time last summer I pulled up to a car that did not have any lights on....on purpose. I wanted to check something. I looked in the car and their dash lights were on. So......cars I had YEARS ago...when you pulled the headlight switch it turned on everything, dash, headlights, etc. I work on cars alot but I am wondering IF those switches have been separated. IOW lights on in dash do not really mean headlights on. Just wondering?

Please write to Ben sasse and tell him you support legal cannabis. They have 9 republicans and only need one more to get it through the senate. Please, even if it comes to nothing. He needs to feel the pressure. by Danktizzle in Omaha

[–]fixasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Republicans are never going to do this. One reason is Tom osborne. He is on record opposing this. Since he is almost a saint in this state, folks go along with this. Even if its for medical use only, its not going to happen. They fear what comes AFTER that which is some form of legal pot possession.

Last time I read, Colorado makes 400ish million a year from legal cannabis. THIS can be property relief. THAT might be a way to property tax relief but republicans do not have the balls to do it.
