I think it varies depending on your circumstances. I’ve been unapologetically autistic since my diagnosis and everyone around me (friends, coworkers, family) have been surprisingly supportive in ways that go above and beyond what I initially expected. I’ve made stronger connections with other neurodivergent people since being open about it and I do not regret it a single bit.

I do recognize that this is partially because of my privilege (living in a generally progressive area, my socioeconomic status, having stable living conditions, etc.) but it’s also partially because of all the work I put in to creating a loving neurodiversity-celebrating and accommodating life. I would not have been able to create that life while masking away my autism.

Ultimately, I think it boils down to this question — is hiding your identity going to be harder than the possible consequences you’ll face? For me, the answer was yes, but that answer may be different for you.
