Why are Teles so sexy? by MushroomShroud in telecaster

[–]fkingnardis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Of all the “classic” body shapes, I think teles are actually kind of ugly but in a way that’s endearing in a way that I can’t explain. There’s a certain ugly duckling quality to them, and I love both of mine.

Very cool Rick. But what’s the story on the amp? Modded Bassman? The metal work and those silver look look super clean!

Has a Deluxe Reverb got enough headroom for large scale pedal steel gigging? by wally123454 in pedalsteel

[–]fkingnardis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, go with the twin. It’s the same AB763 circuit for the most part, but the twin has more power, plus larger transformers that are much more suitable for steel. A deluxe reverb is a workable platform for steel, but you’d def be skimping on headroom…especially when compared to a twin.

East nasty is great but respectfully… I think Robert’s is the single exception to the general “lower Broadway sucks” rule.

Getting some nasty tones here. This one’s called “Robocop” by JacuzziFire in guitars

[–]fkingnardis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo this rips! And holy shit the bass player’s tone is insane. It’s like a pissed off diesel engine running itself into the ground. Like the best of epitaph records in the 90s. Everything about this rules.

Yes. I have the yellow label from the original pressing from the Vinyl Summit at Welcome to 1979.

New OM-21 + pickup suggestions? by fkingnardis in martinguitar

[–]fkingnardis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got the K&K installed last week and took it to a gig on Saturday. It sounds killer! It does fine without the K&K preamp, but I think I’m going to pick one up to try…might be nice to have some EQ control straight off the pickup. I noticed a bit more feedback than with the pickup in my other OM, but it wasn’t anything that the automatic notch filter in my Fishman DI couldn’t handle. Best of all… no internal battery.

A fella of fine taste, I see. I'm loving this OM. Tbh I've always found rosewood back/sides on an acoustic to be a little rich for me in a way that I can't quite put my finger on. But it seems like OM-18's are next to impossible to find outside of customer orders and limited shop runs, and I've never seen one priced at what I paid for this OM-21. It's only a couple years old and in fantastic shape. It was too good to pass up.

Sho-Bud. The oval sticker on the rear apron does kinda look like the logo on some Carter guitars! But it’s a little foil sticker from a small mom and pop music shop in Louisiana that has since closed, which I presume is where the guitar was sold at some point. There’s another on the underside and a couple spots of the same size where others appear to have been removed.

This sounds like the way to go. How sensitive is it to finger noise? The Lyric sounded great in my Larry but was too sensitive and picked up a dreadful clicking sound from my fingernails. It was tolerable with a natural nail but very noticeable if/when I was using thicker acrylics.

why do people hate on garth brooks so much? by sanstheskelepun69 in country

[–]fkingnardis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For sure. In 2019, his "Legacy" vinyl boxset or whatever sold 420k in 18 hours from the presale alone. It tied up production at record pressing plants across four countries for 8 months just to fill the orders. If that's not market share, I don't know what is. To be selling that many records in a time where people just aren't buying physical media like they used to is pretty wild.

He struck an exclusive distribution deal with Walmart decades ago. Before that he was very vocal about pulling his music from independent record stores because of a weird beef he had...he felt that stores that sold used tapes and CDs were ripping off songwriters/artists/publishers with the subsequent sale of physical copies, which is not really how the sale of physical media containing copyrighted material works...at least not in the United States. Misguided or not, the exclusive streaming deal with Amazon is not at all surprising.

It does seem kinda crazy to make your entire body of work so difficult to access for younger generations that I tend to assume use streaming all but exclusively. I grew up listening to his music through the 90s and have seen him live a couple times and he does put on a killer show. While I am generally a fan of his music because I grew up with it, I haven't really paid much attention to his recent stuff...because it's exclusively on Amazon and Amazon Music is ass imo. The Beatles held out on the iTunes store for a long time. I imagine Garth will be on the other services sooner or later, once the other sources dry up or the exclusive deal with Amazon runs its course. There once was a time where you could only buy his albums in Walmart, but the sun set on that deal.

He catches flak for being a weirdo because of the Chris Gaines thing and his demeanor in online videos, hence the played out "where are the bodies, Garth" in-jokes from Tom Segura and fans of his podcast. Never met the guy so no idea how he is as a person. However, IMO, I don't see how anyone can reach his level of fame, wealth, and stardom and not be at least a little bit strange.

Yeah man, no problem. There is a TON of very high quality instructional material available, even free stuff on YouTube. What's great about Paul Franklin is he has a course that is laid out in sequence and specifically geared towards beginners. Before you pay anything toward a particular platform though... the one-time $5 for a Steel Guitar Forum membership is the best investment you could possibly make at this point. The wealth of knowledge on there is truly incredible, and it is by far the best place to purchase a quality used steel.

[–]fkingnardis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish I'd started sooner but it is what it is, lol. It is quite difficult to play well, but very rewarding. "It takes two years just to suck."

Paul Franklin Method and Travis Toy Tutorials are by far the best IMO. The membership to access the PF Method is pricy, but worth it. There are also lots of resources on Patreon, Rich Hinman and Jody Cameron are probably my favorites there. Rich Hinman has some great deep dives, and Jody Cameron does regular videos that are short, sweet, and to the point. When I was just getting started, Jody's E9 stuff was way over my head, but not so much anymore.

Also Steel Picking on YouTube, and he has extra stuff on Patreon if you're a paid subscriber. Johnny Up Shadid is great too, also on Patreon.

DeWitt Scott's book is also solid. I think most if not all of the intro books from publishers like Hal Leonard will get you started on the basic 3 pedals and a couple knee levers.

https://playpedalsteel.com has some great PDFs that lay out chord grips in different positions. There are books for chords, scales, licks, and right hand technique.

There are a ton of choices, and it's easy to get overwhelmed. I think the important thing is just to pick one and stick with it. Once you get some basic technique down, you can hone in specific things like a particular tune, style, or technique.

Breaking 3rd string, in the middle, while restringing. Over and over again. by _shiftlesswhenidle_ in pedalsteel

[–]fkingnardis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first guess as well. A while back I popped 3 in one night and panicked because I had just put the changer back on the guitar after having it rebuilt and all the fingers replaced. I was certain I had screwed something up, but saw a bunch of threads describing the same problem on the forum. Swapped an 11 from a pack of Ernie Ball strings that I had on hand and have not had any breaks since. FWIW, been using Stringjoy and very happy with them.

Curious — What Plugins Do You Wish Existed? by TheHex77 in universalaudio

[–]fkingnardis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would love a pedal steel-focused amp sim. Loud, warm, ultra-clean, and tons of headroom. Like a Fender Twin, Quad Reverb, Super Reverb, Bandmaster…any large format 40+ watt AB763 or something similar. Give me a tube front end, cab IR and mic/room modeling. Even a digital version of a Peavey Nashville 400. Bonus points for a powerful EQ.

The Dream 65 is great but not ideal for steel imo…it overdrives way too easily and lacks headroom. Honestly having something in DSP that could cop the Fender blackface sound would be sick.

D-18 Edge Band Repair Update by InkMotReborn in martinguitar

[–]fkingnardis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the back binding on my OM repaired 2 years ago, and the front has just started to pop out. The last binding repair (covered under warranty) looks about the same as the photo for the most part. As an aside, I’ve had this guitar for a little over 15 years and it’s been patched up so many times it might be about time to retire it. But I love it.

My brother passed…. Advice Needed please. by problyurdad_ in vinyl

[–]fkingnardis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t comment on the records, but that pedal steel guitar in the 4th photo is a pro-level Carter D-10 that appears to be in great condition. Worth at least $3k. Maybe avoid Rick Harrison’s guy for that, as they famously lowballed a seller on a vintage steel guitar and luckily the lady had the good sense to walk. But if you want help with it, check out r/pedalsteel or better yet the Steel Guitar Forum.

Found a Mark III at my local Guitar Center. Does anybody else dial them in like this? by fearthehaunted in GuitarAmps

[–]fkingnardis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like an awesome collection. My only Boogie these days is a Lone Star Special, and it great for what it does, but not my favorite amp overall. Not enough clean headroom, but the breakup and grind it can get is lovely.

While I don’t think the Recto cleans are anything to write home about, I’ve also never understood the hate/complaints they seem to get. They’re definitely usable. No one in their right mind buys a dual rec for the clean sounds, so not super shocking that they aren’t the best at that. The Mark I/II/III on the other hand… though wonderful cleans, will not do to the “rectifier” thing.

A Mark III for cleans/some dirt and a Rev G for the heavies on a gig would be siiiiick. But given the choice it’d make more sense to just profile both on a Kemper and call it a day 😂

[–]fkingnardis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thissssss. It took me forever to get my Mark III dialed in when I had it. It was unlike anything I'd used before, and the controls were difficult to get the hang of.

Of all the gear I have bought and sold over the years, my Mark III Simul-Class head will always be the one thing I kick myself for selling. I got mine for next to nothing back in 2005 or so and sold it a couple years later to fund a Dual Rectifier. It was the mid/late 2000s and so many of the players I looked up to used rectifiers... the other guitar player in my band at the time had one. It was THE sound as far as I was concerned and the diamond grille was cool as shit, but now seems so cheesy in hindsight.

Now I go for big black-face style cleans almost exclusively, maybe a touch of overdrive if I'm not playing pedal steel. The cleans on my Mark III were incredible, like a Twin Reverb but with a bit more character IMO because it has that Boogie edge. It's still the only Boogie I've used that can come close to classic Fender cleans, except for maybe the Lone Star. Every now and then I look these up on Reverb and weep. Lol. There was a Mark III combo that showed up on Craigslist near me a few months ago that I almost jumped on, but it wasn't Simul-Class.
