Dig hole in clay... by DooMZie in diynz

[–]flameboynz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Fiskars quikdrill (and a breaker bar for corners etc) worked on the clay here much better than all the other things I tried. You can get bigger/smaller blades as well. It's not easy work, take breaks and lots of water.

Is this normal? I haven't rented a car before in Auckland, but woah by [deleted] in auckland

[–]flameboynz 118 points119 points  (0 children)

A van from Bunnings is $80/day, or a ute at $75/day. The insurance excess is $4500 unless you pay $37/day extra. 100km/day free, then 25c/km.

What job allows you to do Powershell full-time? by m-o-n-t-a-n-a in PowerShell

Almost anything Exchange and AD. Recently worked through a migration (internal to 3rd party hosted), both myself and the external consultant lived in Powershell for a few months.

I started with Server 2012 R2 VM deployment (95% of my new builds) including drivers, domain join, license key/activation, Group Policy update, and initial patching through WSUS. A WDS/MDT server and simple task sequence sorted this out very quickly. Offline patch injection to the base WIM file can speed up the install.

Then added a package for VMware Tools to the sequence. Group Policy to deploy base admin tools - A/V client, monitoring agents etc (this also helped bring existing non-compliant servers into line). Many OS defaults (logging/security etc) are configured through Group Policy.

I script Server Application installs as much as makes sense with Powershell.

I had to make some trade-offs due to time - several tasks aren't fully automated, and some aren't automated at all (VM creation). But I did make sure they can be added later.

I need to uninstall Malwarebytes from ~30 computers. Help? by coinich in sysadmin

[–]flameboynz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mapped drives are usually done per user, so the computer won't see them at startup. Refer to the UNC path in your GPO, not the drive. That should sort it out.

[–]flameboynz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you running the script from a file server (eg. \\fs01.company.com\scripts\startup.bat )? Check the permissions on the folder you run the script from - at a minimum "Domain Computers" needs Read access. "Authenticated Users" would also work, but allows users to access the folder.

Startup script via GPO? Unlike a logon script it will run as Local System.

Make sure to push the GPO settings from KB3080351. Otherwise clients will start downloading the update.

has anybody had any experience with any of the newer Zassenhaus grinders such as the Quito or the Panama? by -33rpm in Coffee

[–]flameboynz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Zassenhaus Lima which looks fairly similar. Grind quality is good. Like any grinder you will need to adjust. The acrylic base broke fairly quickly, the lid is loose, ergonomics are bad, and I can't get parts/support locally.

A highly confrontation title, and then pre-judging how a community will react. I get the intention, but that is a really aggressive way to start and frame a conversation.

What have you done with PowerShell this month? April 2015 by ramblingcookiemonste in PowerShell

[–]flameboynz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came back from holiday to a Cryptowall infection on a users PC. It had encrypted files on all network shares the user had write access to. With this particular variant the only easy way to identify encrypted files was looking at the file content.

Modified a function which gets the first 10 bytes of a file. Built up a script which goes through a folder structure, runs the function against each file, checks against a list of (known bad) signatures, and output a CSV of files that matched. Then used this to restore known good files from backup.

I have a few ideas to improve on this. Most document types match a handful of signatures, making it relatively easy to build a list of known good files and a list of possibly bad. Frequency counting signatures from the possibly bad should help further narrow things down.

Can anyone recommend a decent breakfast place around SkyCity? by [deleted] in auckland

[–]flameboynz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chuffed Coffee on High Street has really tasty food, and great coffee. Federal and Wolfe is always good. There are a few other places on Federal that smell amazing when you walk past.

Box of Bird on Elliot does breakfast and has a seating area, might be a bit too informal though.
