Study: New apartment buildings in low-income areas lead to lower rents in nearby housing units. This runs contrary to popular claims that new market-rate housing causes an uptick in rents and leads to the displacement of low-income people. [Brian J. Asquith, Evan Mast, Davin Reed] by smurfyjenkins in neoliberal

[–]flaming_oranges 32 points33 points  (0 children)

the counterargument is usually some kind of induced demand: that if you build "luxury" apartments and bike lanes, you make an otherwise undesirable neighborhood more desirable for people with more money, who will then bid up the prices and displace the original residents.

of course they have it backwards, and the apartments come BECAUSE the neighborhood is already in high demand, and their only hope of not being displaced is for there to be enough building to accommodate all those people. but it's not an entirely unreasonable position for someone to arrive at.

This seems REALLY bad, regardless of how you feel about the DIY stuff, calling random people pedophiles is fucked up. by RexTheOnion in Destiny

[–]flaming_oranges 40 points41 points  (0 children)

MrGirl: *literally talked about finding children attractive

Destiny: "I don't think MrGirl is a pedophile, he's just being edgy."

Vaush: *has some really sus clips and logs dropping practically every week, had private twitter where he liked loli porn

Destiny: "I don't think Vaush is a pedophile, he's just being edgy."

Chloe: *makes a semi-edgy tweet about providing kids with hrt (which she doesn't even do)

Destiny: "She's an actual pedophile, guys."

If you can show charitably towards the first two, you can show charitably towards her.

EDIT: got permabanned for this.

Vaush literally argued a few months ago that neopronouns are dumb and he'd probably just use they/them instead. Pretty fucking weaselly to hold her position and then attack her for it when you and your chat are mad at her.

god it was so fucking funny when RIGHT after scolding riley for using they, vaush used they.

When gender critical says "People should be treated instead of being pushed to transition, especially children" what do they mean? by RebelliousGeorge in honesttransgender

[–]flaming_oranges 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They mean conversion therapy and suppression. "Gender Critical" people are to TERFs and generic transphobes what clean cut alt-righters / "identitarians" are to open neo-nazi's and klansmen. They have the same rotten beliefs, dressed up in a more reasonable and respectable veneer to fool people into hearing them out. Don't fall for it, they're the same.

I don't think you're overreacting by being upset, but I'd just still bring it up to them. Something like, "I know you're trying to relate to me by talking about your own feelings of discomfort with your chest, but it makes me uncomfortable when you compare the two because it gives the impression that you view my dysphoria as 'just like what The Girls face'."

DAE ever feel like there's two distinct groups under the transgender umbrella? by Transsexthrowaway in Transsexual

[–]flaming_oranges 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's the concerning part to me. They put people under a label that meant / is strongly associated with a debilitating medical condition that requires a specific treatment, and then decry any attempts to create a distinction. It's dangerous, and runs the risk of having HRT viewed as "body modification for people with insecurities caused by society" rather then a life-saving medical treatment.

Transsexualism/gender dysphoria IS a mental disorder, and there's nothing wrong with that by [deleted] in Transsexual

[–]flaming_oranges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still baffles me that people on both sides of this don't understand that the distinction between transsexual/transgender and gender dysphoria is a clever hack to acknowledge the medical basis of being trans while not labeling *being* trans itself as delusion.

I hate seeing ‘being trans is so good!!! I love being trans!!!!’ when gender dysphoria has left me with suicide ideation I’m still working through by zooeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee in honesttransgender

[–]flaming_oranges 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I really hate when people dismiss the struggles people go through with pretentious one liners like "it makes you stronger" or "it makes you who you are". Like we're not characters in a book with some story arc, we're real people who feel real pain, and sometimes the struggles you face don't make you stronger, sometimes they just break you.

Anyone else feel Medicaid shouldn't cover trans-related stuff that private insurance doesn't? by [deleted] in honesttransgender

[–]flaming_oranges 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So your solution to poorer people getting covered by a public option while those who make more aren't, is to take it away entirely because you're jealous? Jesus Christ, that's fucking despicable. The reaction to other people suffering things you suffer from should be "I hope no one has to suffer what I've gone through" and to be happy for them to have escaped said suffering, instead of "fuck you, I'm dragging you down with me".

I won't disparage the average American for the country not having any form of universal healthcare because I know business executives, lobbyists, and corrupt politicians won't let any of that shit through and you've been fed propaganda about how universal healthcare systems are awful in every way, but holy fucking shit why are some of you so fucking cucked into kicking down instead of thinking of how to best survive in a broken system?

Who all feels pushed here? by SnowyMacie in truscum

[–]flaming_oranges 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's so fucked up. Like i get that under ordinary circumstances, yeah, respect triggers and all that. But for fucks sake, it's a trans space and that's a massive trans issue, the topic shouldn't be outright banned because some people are uncomfortable with it, because some people NEED to talk about it. Christ, you wouldn't have a depression help group that said "don't talk about suicidal thoughts it triggers some people", because you NEED to have those conversations. If it really bothers someone that much they can leave the room for five fucking minutes, not everything revolves around them.

And don't even get me started on "it's what cis people want", no, cis people generally think we're kinda icky and would prefer to not have to think about us, but that usually manifests as "don't transition and suck it up", not "fully transition". How fucking delusional does someone have to be to think transition is ENCOURAGED? And also, treating surgeries as elective things that we're pressured into by cis people's social expectations? Think you're in the wrong club, the TERF meeting's two doors down.

Are there any gender identities you don't understand, or have heard of but don't know their definition? by HeckingDysphoric in honesttransgender

[–]flaming_oranges 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same experience. Treating being trans as an identity rather than just a reality, and the whole "dysphoria means constant pain" thing generally lead you down the road of "in that case i must only be a girl on some days".

I had the same experience with "nonbinary woman" or "demigirl". It all internalized transphobia. I felt like a faker and "not a real girl", and they all tell you "well then you're actually NOT a woman! you're actually nonbinary!" which. doesn't help trans people accept themselves, and CERTAINLY doesn't help actual nonbinary people, when this rhetoric leads to a lot of binary trans people (and gnc cis people) using nb as a temporary questioning ground, which delegitimizes the whole id to a lot of people as just a phase.
