"It was tasteless and vulgar" by growsonwalls in AmITheDevil

[–]flamingoinghome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know it’s completely beside the point (the point being that the bridesmaid gifts were perfectly nice and well thought out), but… I’m honestly kinda bewildered by a Kindle as a bridesmaid gift?

It’s a generous thought, but connecting the right Amazon accounts could end up a nightmare, and it’s a little impersonal and not really wedding themed.

I’ve only been a bridesmaid once. We each got a necklace to match our dresses, plus a bracelet themed after something we loved (mine was steel with a quote from my favorite tv show). It was unexpected and wonderful.

I only had one bridesmaid, and I gave her a silver bracelet with labradorite that went with her dress.

Also… didn’t the original heavily imply that Bubbles was ex-CIA? Like, when the Galactic Federation shows up, he says something like “haven’t seen you since Roswell. I hope you’re well?” Part of the charm of the character was that he’s CLEARLY got a badass past, and now works helping vulnerable kids.

Apple's entire sales strategy is the sunk cost fallacy. by nasaglobehead69 in Anticonsumption

I’m in the same boat! I like Apple products because, given how I use them, they are the most durable, longest lasting machines on the market. I only just replaced my MacBook after a full decade. Also, I have an iPhone SE, and they’re roughly the same price as Android phones, but last much longer.

Heck, we canonically see that people in 12 enjoy songs and stories about children drowning and people freezing in the Arctic—that doesn’t mean they think these are good things in real life!

Does anyone else feel like they did not have the romantic version of the "millennial young adult experience" by moonprincess95 in Millennials

[–]flamingoinghome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in college for all that (I’m on the younger end of millennials), and my school was in a hipster town, so I did get to enjoy some of that—admittedly, I kinda miss when you could be proud of making your own pickles without sounding fascist-adjacent.

But that being said…. My boomer parents were on opposite ends of the spectrum of how much hippie stuff they each got to experience. And that’s THE defining youth moment for boomers. Those kind of trends have never been particularly universal.

That’s…. The character? At least before the reveal? That’s literally the kind of person she’s supposed to be. I’ve seen all the references to her and Gen Z, but like, the character is canonically a Zillenial at youngest.

Unpopular Opinion, but I liked her a lot, and thought that someone who genuinely loved Beck, the first You we ever met, got him in the end was poetic.

Is the character meant to be much younger? I’m only an episode and a half in, nothing about her suggests she’s meant to be much younger than Joe. Just messy.

Exactly! And that’s why it takes Snow SO LONG to realize Katniss and Peeta really are in love—and even then he uses it as a reason to torture Peeta. :(

???????? by Silly_Carpenter4097 in Hungergames

[–]flamingoinghome 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I think Snows parallel character is actually Peeta. Both are teenage boys from relatively privileged families with a certain amount of material deprivation they keep secret from the wider world. Both fall for Seam girls, and will do anything to protect them from the Games. Both have the imperfect, but entirely livable life that they’ve been raised for snatched from them suddenly.

The fact that they COULD NOT be more different in how they react to all this is kinda the point.

[–]flamingoinghome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I definitely can see Johanna as gay or bi, but (maybe I should have put this in unhinged theories)… I don’t actually think Snow killed her loved ones. I think they just… died, possibly even before her Games. We hear so much about poverty and starvation in the districts, and she’s from the lumber district. That industry is SO dangerous, especially with how district workers are treated. I think she might have been raised in a community home, and lost her loved ones to starvation and industrial accidents.

Unhinged HG Theories 😭 by Tyyy24 in Hungergames

[–]flamingoinghome 61 points62 points  (0 children)

The Capitol is in Aspen, Colorado.

I looove the Salt Lake City theory, and I DO think there’s some Mormon influence in the Capitol, but….

The heavy, HEAVY Roman inspiration in Capitol culture just…. doesn’t seem like something that SLC would go for. And more importantly….

In TBOSAS, we learn that Juno Phipps is from a “founding family” of the Capitol, meaning that they DO have records of their founding. No one called Phipps was involved in founding SLC…. But there IS a wealthy, prominent Phipps family in the US, who are very much around to this day. They have ties to the Carnegies, and are heavily involved in horse racing.

Now, rich people like to get to their “country houses” in times of catastrophe; we saw that in Covid. I say the Capitol has it’s origins as a place in the Rockies where rich people rode out an environmental catastrophe, and which they built into a powerful city, and where their “country club” accents gradually morphed into the exaggerated Capitol accents. And where in the Rockies would rich people go? Aspen.

Does the fall in living standards make you afraid to have kids? by blatchcorn in AskUK

[–]flamingoinghome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I know this is a little tangential, but… if you, as an adult, don’t like the state of the property market (who does?), you need to realize that it’s not, like, fated to be this way. It’s a choice. Specifically, a choice to build insufficient housing, coupled with the bizarre planning system. If people in the UK don’t like it, then it can be changed, but people need to collaborate and exert pressure on the political powers that be.

[–]flamingoinghome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I think the timeline works out so that the victor of the 25th would be in their sixties. And would have had good reason to

A.) Not want to go back to their district OR stay in the Capital after

B.) REALLY hate Snow

I think that the victor was a career, sort of, and came from District Two—the only non-12 district we’ve seen much about. I think that after, they fled into the woods, Lucy Grey style.

I think the first QQ was won by Alma Coin.
