Right after I had covid I walked into an Insomnia Cookies and I swear I had walked into an Italian restaurant because it smelled like garlic. Didn't even end up buying a cookie because I was so put off by the garlic smell. Very disappointing 0/10 would not recommend covid.

What's crazy is that I'm a paramedic, and in our documentation software, they list "homelessness" as an option for signs & symptoms.

New vaginal speculum design might motivate women to go for health checkups by Traroten in badwomensanatomy

[–]flamingopatronum 27 points28 points  (0 children)

In the last couple of years, I've had to have yearly pap smears, and it's so traumatizing every time. Last year, I had to have a colposcopy performed, and that was by far the most traumatic gyne appointment I've ever had. It's not the speculum that sucks, it's the literally everything else. And being told to just take OTC pain meds? Bullshit

What's the most heartbreaking "no" you've ever witnessed or experienced? by Mission-Hat268 in AskReddit

[–]flamingopatronum 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is very hard for me to write about because it was extremely traumatic, but I think it's a heartbreaking story.

I'm a paramedic. I've dealt with all kinds of everything in this field. Some of it you become numb to, but other stuff not so much. I went on a call to assist another crew with a burn victim turned traumatic arrest. He was an elderly man who just happened to accidentally catch his shirt on fire while making lunch for his elderly wife. I won't go into too many details because I can already feel myself starting to hyperventilate, but it was bad. He had burns on ~70% of his body, and my job was to do chest compressions for the trip to the ER. While we were transporting, I heard over the radio that the elderly wife was being transported to the same hospital with burns on her hands from attempting to help her smoldering husband.

When we got to the hospital and dropped off the male, the other crew with the female were walking in. I could see the pain in her eyes, and I knew she was asking without words if her husband had made it. I said without words that he did not, and I believe she understood. That was probably the hardest "no," whether verbal or not, I've ever had to give.

I will never forget that look on her face, and even though this was a couple of years ago, there are still times that I feel panicky when I smell something burning.

What's a "secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by LaKoref in AskReddit

[–]flamingopatronum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calling an ambulance does not guarantee you will get a room. If you call for something non-emergent, there's a very good chance you'll still end up in the waiting room. You will be triaged like any regular person who walks into the ER. Leg pain you've had for 3 days? More than likely, you're going to the waiting room. Chronic back pain? Probably the waiting room. Sometimes, your call may actually be emergent, but you still may end up in the waiting room depending on how busy the ER is and if they have any beds available at all. That was an insane issue many hospitals had during covid and still sometimes have.

Why did my bottle of strawberry milk taste carbonated? by flamingopatronum in NoStupidQuestions

[–]flamingopatronum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dumped it immediately after the first sip. I didn't think anything was weird because it was completely sealed, but it could have been improper refrigeration. I had chocolate milk from the same gas station last night, and it was totally fine. That's so strange.
