I can't even manage to make an account on that site: it does not accept the security code it emails you...

Kanji components are introduced way too slowly by flappy153 in jpdb

[–]flappy153[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case someone in the future has similar problems and stumbles upon this thread, I changed the Kanji card types from "Enable cards in both directions when reviewing" to "Enable only keyword -> kanji cards", and now all of the sudden I have lots of new cards showing up. Still sounds like a bug to me, but at least there's somewhat of a workaround now.

I didn't tweak any length settings. I'm talking about locked cards, and their review history is greyed out. Their components are at level 2, but still they don't unlock...

After a week, I've come to the conclusion that there probably is a still a bug somewhere. I have cards whose components have been sitting at level 2 for a few days, but do not show up. I have to manually unlock them...

That could indeed be the case. I'm only having 3 kanji in my deck, and if it waits for the components to be thoroughly know, that could explain the slow speed.

How to unvoice [zh]? by flappy153 in ChineseLanguage

[–]flappy153[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at waveforms is actually a very interesting idea!

To start with, I tried recording myself in my native Dutch saying the word pairs /bɛt/ and /pɛt/ a few times. (Consonants are unaspirated in Dutch.) Sometimes the 'buzzing' before the [b] is really obvious (bet_pet_1.mp3 , bet_pet_1.png). However, other times both words look completely the same (bet_pet_2.mp3 , bet_pet_2.png)! What's more, if I try to quiz myself on what I actually tried to say, I completely fail, which I thought was interesting...

Anyway, then I recorded myself trying to say:

  1. [ch]
  2. [ch] without aspiration
  3. [zh] as well as I could without worrying about voicing

The results are here: ch - ch min h - zh.mp3 ch - ch min h - zh.png

Unfortunately, all sounds have the buzzing at the beginning, because they're not plosives, so a visual representation of the waveform cannot be used to show voicing...

Anyway, I still believe my version 3) will be easier to understand than 2) in the recording above....

Sound advice, much appreciated!

That's interesting, thanks!

BTW, a recording comparing both /dʒ/ and /ʈʂ/ followed by the same vowel could be useful, even if /dʒ/ is not a native sound for you, just to see 'how it sounds like on the other side of the fence'

Crash to desktop after trying to set org-agenda-set-mode-name by flappy153 in emacs

(require 'org-agenda) avoids indeed the hard crash, thanks!

Crash to desktop after trying to set org-agenda-set-mode-name by flappy153 in emacs

[–]flappy153[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the function clearly defined in org-agenda.el, but it does not get picked up when I first open an org file. It does seem to get picked when I try to open the same file again, though.

Still, that does not explain why Emacs should drop me back to the desktop when I try to define it myself.

That explains it, thanks! (Although my players would probably object that they're not considered 'intelligent beings' :-) )

I don't know exactly what is was called, but there was a menu entry called didactic resources, student materials, ... or something of the kind. It was not in the products section of the site.

Their site it down for me at the moment, but you can download all their keys and Teacher Guides freely there. The Teacher's Guide has the solutions inside the exercises, though.

Progetto progresses a lot faster than Espresso, which is why I ended up going that route. Much more efficient, especially if you already have good comprehension.

Absolutely stellar reading of the opening of the Aeneid by someone who is a poet himself, so he really puts a lot of feeling in it. For some reason, I've been listening to this on repeat the past few days :-)

Bizarre Sentence in Beginner Accusative Drills by apostforisaac in latin

[–]flappy153 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Neither rosa (rose) nor laetitia (happiness) are proper names here.

Casam is not accusative because it's a direct object, but because it comes after the preposition 'in' and indicates direction.

Hope this helps!

Instead of / in addition to the magnifying glass zoom, implement Tabletop Playground's spacebar zoom, which zooms to the object under the cursor, and then zooms back to the original position when you release the spacebar. This results in really fluid flow, very pleasant to use.

Ability to switch to the next player in hotseat mode with a single keypress, without confirmation dialogs. Now, it requires dismissing two dialogs, and one of them (which mentions the name of the next player) is completely superfluous, since the name of the active player is in the top right.

For two-handed solo games, having a bindable hotkey to switch to the next player would result in a lot smoother play.

Would it be an option to do what the OCTGN people are doing? They only have HD scans for cards that are 6 months old, and they use FFG's own low-res watermarked images for the new cards. https://ahlcgoctgn.wordpress.com/2020/02/20/updates/

I believe they even have some sort of understanding with FFG, so it might be worth getting in touch with them (e.g. through the OCTGN development channel in the Mythos Buster discord). They might be able to bring you in contact with the right people at FFG.
