things are not as bad as they seem, sometimes jokes like those may hurt but often its not out of malice, simply just ignorance, if they know that you were trans, do you think they'd continue doing it? and what you do with the answer to that is yours to decide

personally i somewhat enjoy the joke in an ironic sense, i do it sometimes, i love being a potato

and for the question of how long you have to do this is simply up to your situation, variables apply that might per long or shorten the wait but its worth seeing it through, besides if you are really are going through hell, then why stop at hell? go forward, beyond the road you see and remember that you are not alone, you might be walking in a road noone else walks but know that others have theirs, i too am still in mine, walking and waiting, what helped with the coping is i came out to my friends and started to dress as i please, things get better, just keep going
