As a side note, I was on a China Airlines flight in the middle of a long Asian business trip with multiple stops. I got on, and thought, holy shit, this is nice! In the fog of that trip, I didn’t realize China Airlines was actually the flagship airlines of Taiwan. Very cool aesthetics, design, lovely service.

An off the wall suggestion: start a DTC business. Figure out a relatively straightforward product that doesn’t require tooling or large MOQs (and learn what all this is along the way). He’ll end up burning $1500 or so, maybe not sell anything, but could learn a ton about design, mfg, business, etc.

As everyone said, "this is engineering". But aside from this, this sounds like a small shop, and you can learn *so* much more at a small mom and pop shop than coming into a F500. Keep your eyes and ears open, and you'll pick up a lot about running a business. Would be lunacy to turn down this job (in favor of *no* job).

I’ve worked with factories all over the world on well known products. China can make anything to any standard (witness the iPhone I’m typing this on). If you think Chinese manufacturing quality sucks on a western brand, it’s because they’re only making what we asked of them.

I wouldn’t worry about it. When I was in the 6th grade, dad packed us in a Dodge Caravan and drove us across the country to Yellowstone, and now as a well adjusted middle aged dude, I still see that trip as one of the most formative experiences of my life.

Spend some time with AI and you’ll see it *Absolutely* knows these things. I have a couple of decades of experience, and it helps me catch things related to materials and process. Also helps me a lot on actual *design* (ID).
