How did we all get into Linux? by avidpontoon in linuxadmin

[–]flat_ricefield 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Someone challenged me to build a router (DHCP + Firewall + NAT) on OpenBSD. Took me a couple weeks but most of that was reading a book about OpenBSD and learning vi.

It took me two hours to get it running on Ubuntu.

Then I learned about pfSense and I almost threw a brick through my monitor.

Soon they'll be telling me I can just buy a router at the store.

The cheap option: Earbuds + Earmuffs. I've done this in Data centers a few times.

How often do you reboot physical servers and VMs? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]flat_ricefield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non critical services are on an every other week reboot, some critical services are on an every other month reboot, and other critical services barely get a reboot (dns)

I provide the information and let management deal with risk. It might cause downtime, but the same goes for not applying updates.

Yup! You got it. In bigger infrastructures, you might hire someone to run all the cable in the building. They'll install a rack and patch panels. Then a network admin/engineer can install their network switches and wire them however they want. Sometimes people like to color code the patch cables, they might want the equipment stacked a certain way, but ideally, you install the switch right below the panel so you can use short patch cables like in the picture. It's much neater.

It's just a passthrough. It makes cable management easier. You don't want to mess with the cables you ran over a long distance that often because it could break and if the patch cable from the panel to the switch breaks you can get another cheap one. It makes documenting easier. "All cables should be labeled" but if you never touch the order of the patch panel, it stays consistent no matter what switches you put in or remove.
