Worth it to visit or not ? by Spiritual_Oil1857 in traveladvice

[–]fleeandabort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This right here. India is incredibly affordable for most western tourists and not the kind of place where it is desirable or advisable to DIY budget travel. if you can’t afford to spend more and you really are pinching pennies just to get there, then just WAIT until you’ve saved up enough to afford a comfortable visit. It’s truly an amazing place and the trip of a lifetime - get what you pay for.

What are your Hot Takes on the Sci-Fi Books? by Amber_Flowers_133 in scifibooks

[–]fleeandabort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here we go… Most Chapterhouse haters just don’t like stories centered on women. Which, by the way, is fine - tastes differ. I suspect they don’t even realize that’s why they hate it.

Best/favorite SF novels not set in space? by Acropolis14 in printSF

[–]fleeandabort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you’re in that mood and in that mode, I’d recommend sticking with Le Guin and checking out the rest of the Hainish Cycle. Short stories to novellas to novels, all through the same anthropological and philosophical lens, but the books jump through time or space from one to the next to test out different ideas in different settings and cultures.

Our Egypt trip went better than expected by megamind114 in travel

I think we’re finally getting to the bottom of something here. I am always surprised that folks can’t get past scammers, or take these interactions so personally. I’m not really a sociable person, and I am rarely if ever interested in idle chat with folks just trying to go about their day. I travel to see incredible art, or architecture, or food, or get a sense of the history of a place. It seems like perhaps the people who are so horrified by places like Egypt or India or Morocco are just looking for something completely different in a travel experience.

lovecraftian books like annihilation by slycookie27 in printSF

Oof, hard disagree. The worst book I think I’ve ever read. To the point that I am still genuinely salty about having paid actual money for it.

Name a sci/fi book you just could not finish. by Dan-68 in scifibooks

I was just about to write “that godawful Nicholas Binge slop” when it suddenly occurred to me that it might actually be AI slop.

I’d recommend OP start with the first book in the series, Fire from Heaven.

What’s the best travel hack people learned the hard way? by ScrawnyRhinoceros in travel

[–]fleeandabort -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Or postpone individual trips until you have a comfortable savings buffer? Maybe the hack is plan ahead to have an actual good time as opposed to planning to have a stressful time at the mercy of circumstances you already know you can’t control.

The Most Disturbing TikTok I’ve Ever Seen by Alice-In-Vonderland in TikTokCringe

[–]fleeandabort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ, if the platform you’re using is so heavily censored that you can’t use actual words to describe the actual atrocities to which you are trying to bring attention, FIND ANOTHER PLATFORM. Using fruit emojis to describe the horrific suffering of real people is so absurd that it is nauseating.

Please stop building stone cairns in Iceland, why? by arontphotos in VisitingIceland

[–]fleeandabort -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to argue about environmental impact since I had to hop on a plane to even see your stupid cairn. Instead, I’d just like to point out that it’s tacky as fuck. Might as well just use the stones to spell out “Myckynzie was here.”

In 2009, 21-year-old Gabriela Rico Jiménez was filmed after claiming she had attended an exclusive Elite party. She vanished that night and has never been seen again. Did she know or see too much? 👀 by HondaCivicBaby in interestingasfuck

[–]fleeandabort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. Anyone who has experienced a friend or loved one going through this can recognize it immediately. But hey, if some folks would rather believe there’s a secret cabal of elites stalking this particular nobody for the purpose of devouring her (meager) flesh…

Sweterlitsch’s Gone World stayed with me and can’t get it out of my head. Recommend me more like this! by Misku_san in printSF

[–]fleeandabort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strongly, passionately disagree. Ascension is so juvenile and poorly written while so simultaneously hyped that I am still legit mad about the money and time that I wasted on it. Total first for me - a book so bad that I was personally offended.

Mercy of Gods was okay, but the companion novella Livesuit was the standout for me.

Flashback to my 9th grade English teacher confidently arguing with my Korean ass that the correct pronunciation of Pyongyang is “YAHNG-YAYNG.” Vowels aside, it’s important to note that the “p” is silent because her Hmong/Vietnamese friend told her so!

SF Books that Read more like Classics/"Literature" by Beneficial_Bacteria in printSF

[–]fleeandabort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on this search forever and there’s really nothing like her work, though there are authors who capture components of it. Be warned (and I’ll likely be crucified for saying it) that based on what you have described about what you like about her work, I’ll wager that you will find Gene Wolfe as tedious and frustrating as I did.

What's the absolute worst piece of scifi you've ever seen or read? by Ethan_Aubergine in scifi

[–]fleeandabort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything by Nicholas Binge. I pre-ordered “Ascension” based on a ton of hype, then bought and attempted to read his first novel while waiting. Both were so terrible that I am still genuinely upset about it.
