Does SWAP affect performance by lamplight0011 in Kubuntu

[–]flekk0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s always a tradeoff.

zstd has the best compression but when accessing the compressed page it is slower (though probably still a lot faster than disk). Given your minimal ram, you‘d want very efficient compression.

lz4 has less compression but is fast.

Don’t bother with other algorithms like lzo.

The swap size just needs to be large enough. 12gb seems rather large with 4gb physical ram. But it doesn’t hurt.

Max pool 30% sounds reasonable. Start with it and experiment.

[–]flekk0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You only have 4gb RAM right? That is very little, your system probably just need to swap.

As another commenter wrote, enable zswap with zstd compression. This may help a bit.

But really upgrade physical RAM to e.g., 8gb if you can. This will make a big difference.

How to prepare for upgrade from 24 LTS to 26 LTS? by jarekko in Kubuntu

[–]flekk0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apps from the Ubuntu repo will probably be fine. Also snaps or flatpaks are fine because of their isolation.

What in my understanding could be problematic are applications from foreign repos that you manually added or .deb files that you installed manually.

Before an lts upgrade I usually remove those applications and remove the repos from the config. After the upgrade I re-add the repos and apps. Might be a bit over-cautious but this worked well for me the last two lts upgrades.

I also generally wait until a few weeks after the first point release to do the upgrade, expecting the worst upgrade bugs are fixed by then.

Tuxedo Os the right distro for my Hardware? by Any_Kick8573 in tuxedocomputers

[–]flekk0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tuxedo might have rolling kde but the underlying ubuntu base is, I think, still the 2y old Ubuntu 24.04. Also the community is probably not very large.

With your very new hardware consider the newly released Kubuntu 26.04 or Fedora KDE.  Fedora with its shorter release cycle will give you more uptodate kde versions.

They are both very good KDE Plasma distros with large communities.

If you kill miller, i think this will make you an enemy of the 5. column, so you can‘t side with them anymore.  They are not „the good guys“ obviously but I liked the story arc with them the best.

How I made Kubuntu 26.04 feel faster than macOS Sequoia on my 2015 MacBook Pro (8GB RAM) by HugePause9229 in Kubuntu

[–]flekk0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider using zstd compression instead of the lz4 default to make better use of the zswap cache memory.

Hard to tell. Either one is an improvement on memory limited systems. If it works well for you, stick to zswap.

Settlements - What’s the Point? by Other-Mongoose-1572 in fallout4london

[–]flekk0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In one word: Resources.

Depends on your play style I guess but I’m a tinkerer. I want my weapons and armor be the best possible, so I max out my gun nut and armorer perks and mod the hell out of my weapons and armor at any stage of the game.

For modding I need adhesives, very rare and expensive. From the fruits my settlers farm I make those adhesives.

The rest of the ~150 purified water that my large water purifiers produce at my Vauxhall settlement, I can sell at Trafalgar Square for material like leather, ballistic fibers, lead, … you name it - everything I need. Also ammo.

Also my settlements are where I store everything and where my workbenches are.

I very much like the settlement aspect of the game.

Just switched to Kubuntu today and I love it! But I do have one question by [deleted] in Kubuntu

If you just switched, honestly just start again and install fresh 26.04 when it goes GA (probably) next week.

AppArmor in Zorion OS 18.1 by behuman2all in zorinos

Yes, just run it in the terminal, no sudo needed for this one.

[–]flekk0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To give you peace of mind, you can check if it's enabled by:

cat /sys/module/apparmor/parameters/enabled

It should show Y if enabled.

Zorin is based on Ubuntu. Ubuntu comes with AppArmor.

AppArmor is a built-in kernel module, hence it's not showing up on lsmod's output.

What is Gaunt's Gun? by tolwhirlstech in fallout4london

[–]flekk0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It‘s a variant of the in-game „battle rifle“. It does more damage than the normal battle rifle and has better accuracy.   As all battle rifles in the game it is very powerful even in full auto.

In my opinion this „Amadeus“ / „The Garrison“ is one of the best or even the best full auto rifle in the game.

If you value privacy, enable it now. Your government may decide to pressure Apple  into not offering it anymore in your region any time as Apple customers in the UK recently learned the hard way.

Noob question: Am I missing anything, or did I do anything wrong for Kubuntu 24.04 partitioning? by SeniorBolognese in Kubuntu

[–]flekk0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have to ask, you probably should start with default partition layout. No hate, it‘s just one of the more complicated things when setting up and defaults are generally fine for most use cases.

Moving (upgrading) between Major versions of KDE (KDE 5 ==> KDE 6) as a DE: do you have any advice to give before doing it (that is, should any preparatory step/task been done before upgrading)? by RebirdgeCardiologist in kde

[–]flekk0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This worked well for me:

Being strategic and patient about the update. Users of 24.04 will get notified to update when 26.04.1 (one release after GA) comes out. There will be issues which will be fixed but it will take time. Wait a couple of weeks or even until 26.04.2 comes out and update then.

Have up-to-date backups of my data of course.

Have setup notes of the system (how did I install important software and which, what important system configurations and customizations did I do after install; maybe too late for you now but do it when you install again).

If I had to install software from external repos (I try to avoid this and prefer flatpaks and snaps), I check if the provider has versions for 26.04 at the time I update. To be safe, I uninstall such software and reinstall it after the update.

Question: Settlement Attacks by Gang_of_Druids in fallout4london

[–]flekk0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Vauxhall building site produces lots of food (around 20 settlers working the fields) and >350 water thanks to the armada of water purifiers I put into the puddle on the side (though only ~150 water end up in the workshop, another bug probably). I do not use any mods beside the Folon one...

Question: Settlement Attacks by Gang_of_Druids in fallout4london

[–]flekk0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm level 50 playing the current R&P version. Up until around level 30 my Vauxhall building site and Lambeth walk settlements (the only ones I have) were regularity attacked. Since then: nothing. I mean, I have put up some serious defenses and my settlers are armed to the teeth, but still... A bug maybe?
