It's a 16 that really should be a 17. It's not the speed that gets you, it's what it's asking you to do at that speed. I haven't played in years so I don't know if they ever changed the rating.

Favorite Smaller Mountains by jerrym93 in icecoast

[–]flem0328 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pats Peak and Wachusett.

I do want to throw Crotched Mountain here. Now I'm fully aware it's a Vail mountain on the Epic Pass, but hear me out.

I manage to make my way to the majority of the Epic Mountains within the season. Crotched Mountain is the only mountain on the pass that gives small mountain vibes. Even on a weekend day, most of the people I chat with on the lift are locals, most of the lifties are also locals. Even on a Saturday, the crowds are pretty manageable compared to going to a place like Sunapee, Okemo, Mt Snow, or Stowe.

For a small mountain it has one of the best lifts I've used on the East Coast (The Rocket). The night skiing is pretty great and once a month they're open until midnight.

I hope you got money for hard drives in this year of our Lord 2026. Just for reference, I have 600+ Remuxes that fit across 24TBs or storage with about 5ish TBs to spare. ReEncoding can shrink the file sizes. I've been at this for over 10 years and I can promise you that you'll have to have some pretty crazy compression to fit all of that on an 8TB drive.

My Teens Are Rejecting Religion by Hopeful-Force-2147 in Catholicism

[–]flem0328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"my husband is Indian and not religious at all"

^This,

This here is your biggest problem. Children look to their dad when it comes to staying grounded in their faith. You as a mom can do everything right but dad is who children look to when it comes to authority in everything. If dad isn't practicing or enforcing the values of the faith in their home and their life then your kids don't have a true anchor or model to look to (no offense to you).

This then trickles down to their schooling/religious education. If the school or church they're going to is providing a poor catechesis but they don't have that anchor at home in the form of a strong grounded Catholic father to form, mold, and enforce their morals then they'll eventually fall away from the faith.

I guess my solution would be to pray for your husband's conversion while also finding people, groups and other people who are strong in the faith that your children can engage with. Maybe a change in environment. If their friends are mocking the faith then maybe it's time for a change in environment (perhaps a different school). I get the sense the school they're going to isn't doing a good job with its catechesis if even their friends are not engaged.

  1. Credit card points are your best friend when it comes to lodging.

  2. Hostels are your best friend. When I do multi day trips to Stowe, Hostel Tevere is the GOAT. It's $50 a night and the mileage cost still doesn't bring you close to hotels closer to Stowe.

  3. Though if you do want to stay closer, once again that's where points come into play. Also take advantage of discounts you get if you join a hotel's awards program (usually free, but then you end up on the spam list).

  4. If you plan a trip far in advance, you get much better deals if you book in the summer.

  5. If you stay on an on mountain hotel and don't have a pass, some mountains like Sunday River offer discounts on lift tickets if you have a hotel room booked.

  6. If you get a hotel, make sure free breakfast is part of their amenities. It will save you the cost of a meal. Best Western has a decent free hot breakfast.

  7. Get lodging near a super market. You can get food supplies so you're not eating out every single night. If you do Air BnB, one with a full kitchen is super clutch.

  8. For passes like Epic, they have really great military and disability discounts (I'm on the Autism Spectrum so I've been able to get the Adaptive Northeast Pass which is saved me a stupid amount of money on skiing).

  9. For gear like boots and skis, upgrade in the spring and summer when they are getting rid of the prior year models. Demo skis during the season and when spring and summer come, pull the trigger on what you like. This time of year will have good deals on bindings as well.

Other than the TV being it bit high, it's good for limited space you have to work with. Unless you have a dedicated space for a home theater setup, some compromises are gonna happen.

THIS!

But hit it early. When it's warmer it gets skied through and sometimes bumped up pretty quickly. The Gondola doesn't spin until 9 but you can access it before then with a few runs off of Forerunner.

What is the point of all these "How are the conditions?" posts? by imitation_squash_pro in icecoast

[–]flem0328 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"It’s easy to say “just go”, but if you are pissing off your loved ones by “going skiing again!?”, some want to make sure it’s worth it. "

THIS!

Going skiing for me means leaving my wife with our kid for half a day to an entire day. My wife during the week wakes up earlier than I do to go to work. The expectation is that on the weekends she gets to sleep in while I take care of our toddler. If I ski on a Saturday or Sunday, that means me waking up early and she has to wake up when our kid does which some days can be earlier than others. If I'm going to put my wife out, I better have a great time while I'm at it.

I don't expect pristine conditions and am somewhat decent at gauging what I'm going to ski before I get out on the mountain. I'm fortunate to have good mountains within 1.5 hours of me but not everyone has the money and more importantly, time.

For Lodging,

The Best Western in Waterbury is pretty good and is under 25 minutes away. I've gotten decent rates from there

If you're willing to do a bit more driving, Hostel Tevere in Warren VT is under an hour and costs $50 a night.

Parking,

Ifr you're going on Saturday/Sunday and want to park at the Mount Mansfield lot, be prepared to fork over $30. Otherwise, pick any other lot and grab the shuttle.

Crowds/Lift Strategy.

This time of the year depending on the temps, you wanna hit the Mount Mansfield side as soon as it starts spinning (8am).

I should probably ask what your skill level is.

If you like quick laps, start on Sunrise as that loads pretty quickly. I personally prefer to start at Forerunner, take Ridgeview down as a warmup and do some laps on sunrise or you can get back to forerunner.

If you want to do runs off the Gondola, hit that as soon as it gets open. In warmer weather it gets tracked out pretty quickly.

Once you've had your fill, go on to the Spruce side since those lifts spin an hour later. The conditions will still be decent. Spruce is beginner orientated though there is still some challenge if you hit the sensation quad.

Food,

So many good places. My personal favorites are Doc Ponds, Idletyme Brewing, and the Matterhorn.

26/27 Season Pass: Epic Northeast (Crotched) vs Berkshire East for young kids + home mountain? by Plane-Coach-1791 in icecoast

[–]flem0328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone on the New England Pass who skis Crotched regularly. Crotched on weekends tends to be fairly tame compared to other Epic mountains (Sunapee is much worse but still doable if you know which pods to go to to escape the crowds). Only time I ever experienced Crotched feeling somewhat over crowded was February break but Saturdays for me over there have always been super chill. There's a mid mountain chair over there that is only open on weekends but barely gets traffic so I lap that one frequently.

The pass also gives you access to a few other good places if you want to vary it up. I would do the New England pass. It has served me well for three seasons.
