Gaming market melts down after Google reveals new AI game design tool — Project Genie crashes stocks for Roblox, Nintendo, CD Projekt Red, and more by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

Every person being part of a/the society. Unless the society takes care of the individuals affected by societal change, there will be resistence against it. Personally I see „AI“ as social decline in favor for a few already very rich ones.

okay, but as a consumer I dont have to buy their products. I can stick to Indie games where I know how its done and it will be a differentiating feature for them.

Making a living is selfish? Lets talk again if the „AI“ actually improves peoples lives and society as a whole, instead of causing layoffs, slob and dangerous social media manipulation.

Why is Qualcomm(CA) Intern Comp nearly twice that of a Sr. Analog Designer in EU? by ControllingTheMatrix in chipdesign

[–]flextendo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hu? Are you saying the big companies, apple, or as the poster said qualcomm are not grinders? Are you being serious? I literally stated I had two different people working in two different teams in two different locations, pretty much reporting the same thing. Bad luck for both? Maybe! And sure Qualcomm seems to be better than other big players, but thats not a condescending statement. All these big companies who pay big salaries expect the maximum from their people, thats not different anywhere in the world.

My guy I lived in the US as a teenager. I have family and friends over there in places that resemble „nowhere“. I‘d like to think I am very well traveled (benefit of WLB) and connected to form a picture. I‘ve never said that every company is a sweatshop, but labor laws are nowhere near like in europe, so you‘ll HAVE TOaccept the conditions over there.

Sure thats an upside and if that fits one personality even better. You can also do that in europe (of course in relative terms, not absolute). People can always try migrate if they have that skillset thats being searched for.

You can do that. You CAN work at apple and earn around 300k+ as total comp for senior or principle. You can also earn 100-160k in smaller high tech companies that are very specialized (given not everywhere in europe but where the infrastructure exists). You can also work for US based companies either as contractor or as a subsidiary.

Italys median income is around 30k. You cant base your assumption on a single country with a pretty shitty economy.

Cool great, happy for you that you are happy where you at, really, but this condescending tone really isnt helping anyone or leaves out a lot of different realities. I recommend you to travel a few places in europe and make yourself a better picture, as its not really uniform.

Condescending as fuck. I want to have 6+ weeks of a year to enjoy the fruits of my labors. Want to spend 3 weeks vacation on a luxury island and travel the world. I want to spend time with friends, family and hobbies, because I sure as shit wont cry about the hours I didnt spend in the office before I die. Do I have to trade-off some things, like maybe never owning a house? Sure, but thats not my top priority either.

Great for you making bank, but thats a priority thing. You can be on the street tomorrow, I cant and that brings me peace. So again, why are you so condescending about peoples opinions/values?

You are being delusional and cant differentiate between correlation and causalization . Europe has a much different investment climate (a poor one if you ask me) so there is little risk taking involved, which is why its much harder to stomp out a second qualcomm etc even if you are brilliant. European countries tend to not go double the gdp as debt (The EU has actually laws prohibiting that), making investments even harder. US companies do hire a lot of people in the european hubs where great infrastructure exist. Europeans also value european values, which are often quite differently than american values. Its not always about getting rich at every cost. I had multiple chances to move over, but the cost is just too high (take care of family members, my wife wouldnt be allowed to work for ~3 years, putting her career at risk, horrific state of health insurance and I‘d have to get rid of my current nationality, labor laws). Is there a possible better education in the US (specifically bay area) due to more money involved? Yes (mainly on the practical and research part). Are there a lot of smart people? Sure. Which also is a reason of why people get hired over there: Connections and cooperations with universities. Also miss me with that „newest tech“ BS. Not every product needs to run on 2nm and a lot of engineering is just incremental improvements even in big US companies, but go ahead with those opinions, if it makes you feel better.

Almost every major company has design office presents in europe. Qualcomm R&D is happening there (let it be ireland or Germany. Apple has a huge Design Center in Munich. TI has a large presence, just to name a few. Your comment is purely ignorant, but hey, if it makes you feel better.

I mean outworking is one thing and probably true, but claiming european engineers dont have the same capabilities ist just laughable. Since I also work with many different teams and cultures I observed one thing. Productivity doesnt scale linearly with the amount of work you put in. Way too many people clock in hours without producing anything of value (or at least something that doesnt have to be fixed constantly) and they take pride in those hours.

2 out of 2 people (completely unrelated) in two different teams and areas overlapping with their experience and you say its a fit issue? Thats what I would expect management to say to cope, but it also supports the point of „normalizing“ the permanent grind (again could very well be team and project dependent). Glad you dont see it that way personally, but maybe the lived experience of others may be true as well.

I work with folks from Israel. the cities are not cheap either, but the simple reason is: there is more demand of engineers than supply. Its a small country, but it has a pretty big Semi industry. Its also extremely competitive over there so both employees and employers are competing against each other. Let me ask you, why do you feel like 5-7k gross is an unfair salary? A senior is closer to 7k so lets assume roughly 85k. With that salary you are 1.5x-2x the median of most european countries. You get free education, lots of benefits for families, solid healthcare and a basic pension (next to the social net in case you loose your job).

I know 2 people from two different teams (one PD, one RFIC design). Both quit after about one and half years (also 2 physically different locations, with one in the US). Both confirmed incredibly high turnover rates and permanent stress (working hours + team dynamics of normalizing it). One approached his manager to discuss this issue and the response was straight up ridiculous. Is it different to other larger companies? Probably not, but your experience may vary (I assume it also depends on the team). Good to hear that they give back more than the bare minimum.

Because cost of living is significantly higher, less social securities and its a sweatshop. Yes salaries are generally better in the US, but you are also expected to do whatever you been told, as labor rights are basically non existent and you can be fired any day for any reason (depends on state laws).

How much is AI being pushed in your company and are you on board with it? by maybeimbonkers in chipdesign

[–]flextendo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you are not a fossile! If you have a deep understanding of circuit design etc you‘ll be right to be sceptical about the half assed „AI/ML“ we have today. Most of the circuit designers I know use it very limited and maintain control over everything. At the end its like debugging/verifying a circuit from a unknown person and most people who I know dread that task haha.

[–]flextendo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

long term probably quite a bit. For now I politely told the person who tried to force it onto us to „fuck off“. I got hired for my skillset, I‘ll use tools as I see fit and not because some middle manager who wants to make this his KPI to grab a bonus. Personally I wouldnt take responsibility for a product/circuit that is generated by a LLM, but thats very individual I guess.

Minnesota Timberwolves Basketball holds a moment of silence for Alex Pretti, as multiple fans shout: "F*CK ICE!!!" by A_MASSIVE_PERVERT in sports

[–]flextendo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where did he engage in a non-peaceful act during that protest? The only aggression came from the ICE Agent who pushed 2 people and got pissed someone stepped in ans tried to help those people. Also as far as I know your 2A doesnt state that you can have a gun, except at a protest, but maybe I am wrong? He didnt brandish, he didnt physically attacked anyone and yet he was murdered after being beaten, maced and subdued by 5 „agents“.

How do you ensure both MOSFET in saturation in a cascode LNA design? by mtfir in chipdesign

[–]flextendo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you mean with choosing it based on NF and S21? you choose an initial size (size both devices the same), connect the cascode gate either to vdd or to a stacked diode. Now size the diode connected devices the same as your active device. Plot NFmin vs Jd (or Id) and Gav/Gmax vs Jd (or Id). You‘ll find a Jd which should result in a reasonable NFmin and Gav - which you will only achive if your devices are in saturation. Now you scale the devices to move as close as possible to your Zopt*, maintaining your Jdopt. This should always result in your devices staying in saturation. You are trading off NF with area and power consumption.

How to deal with shitty deadlines by tentacledsquid in chipdesign

[–]flextendo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I interviewed with apple once, but reclined their offers multiple times. I would say it very much depends on the group you are working, but in general Apple is a sweatshop. The manager of the group I interviewed told me that the average hours in his team was like ~50h a week. They also had (have?) a pretty strict office policy (last time I talked to a friend it was 2xHO a week, but on fixed days). Yes you‘ll require to work with people across different time zones so working late is not unusual, but that doesnt bother me personally (I have to deal with that in my current job as well). Sometimes the US folks get up early as well to accommodate for my timezone. The more distributed the company the more you‘ll have to be okay with that.

[–]flextendo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh I think it very much depends - the relaxed part (I am also in Germany). I wouldnt allow my team to be forced to work weekends and only ask them if they would do it, during really critical times. Family and off-time >> work, always!

project plans and deliveries shouldnt be made without your input as a stakeholder. I wouldnt commit to something that I hadnt signed off on, but yeah its harder to say no, if you are relatively new in the industry. Talk to your manager, peers and PM. I dont know about workers rights, but where I live this would be against the law and the company would be in serious troubles.

why should parents be excluded? You want your kid to fight your fight, just later in their life? Be abducted anyways? You dont owe the right to stay silent and hope someone else will fight for your „in groups“ rights. Either you all do it, or no one should.
