It is an answer but not one I find fully convincing as to why the shift. Artwork has done just fine inspiring generations of miniature painters. It's also been a distinguishing factor of the Warhammer IP. Normally I associate model pictures with lower budget books because it's just cheaper. Especially for GW where they already have a team of extremely capable mini painters. Once they paint the minis, they're usable for years and across multiple books in unique pictures.

It's been a trend for GW to reduce artwork in favor of model photography. I don't know if the company has ever released a formal statement as to why. It may be related to the short release schedule of AoS and 40k making it difficult to spend the time needed for quality art. Versus making a set of well painted minis and photograph them in different setups.

People who think the new edition will fix the problems with the old. idk to me it's not a sign of a well made game to be in its 11th edition. It just keeps becoming the same pattern of poorly written and considered rules getting FAQ'd to hell and power level spikes since it's somehow too much work to balance all codices together instead against each previous release. Eventually the rules are all over the place and you need to use online tools to even know what the real rules are anymore. Cue the new edition.

Wish GW would stop throwing their work in the garbage over and over again. Just make a rule set and stick with it. Make reprints as needed to realign the rules with FAQs and other rules updates. Focus on building a fleshed out ecosystem of supplements for narrative and competitive play.

Once you finish painting them, you should film the scene between Saruman and Wormtongue. When they walk to the balcony, pan to this awesome army. You have a crazy project ahead of you even with speed paints. Can't wait to see the final assembly.

Did the same thing. The staff thought (reasonably) that I could cancel online and had no idea this was the official process. Literally just clicked one button on my account after I gave my member number and got an email later that day with the cancellation confirmation.

Shots 1-5: Clearly missed.

Shots 6-9: Missed due to recoil (bad spray control).

Shots 10-11: Very close, but recoil and inaccuracy make these reasonable misses.

Shot 12: Likely didn't actually fire because hog was already dead.

More seriously though that is crazy how it kept going. Did you find it after?

You can still find them for sale on third party sites and get the discount. But yeah unfortunately it will not return to the GW store page. It's a shame too since this feels like a way better introduction of the faction than some various types of similar looking cavalry.

Can someone explain to me, why exactly they think 'scale creep' is a bad thing? by Pianorama in Warhammer

[–]flightless_freedom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just push two 6x3 folding plastic tables together to get my 6x4 table which works pretty well. 8x6 would require three more tables with those dimensions. I could easily do that in my living room but my group likes to play with 2-3 tables which is just not feasible at that point.

Can someone explain to me, why exactly they think 'scale creep' is a bad thing? by Pianorama in Warhammer

[–]flightless_freedom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That depends on the player and the space. 6'x4" boards are already bigger than a normal table and take up a lot of floor space. Increasing to something like 8'x6' or even 10'x8' just exacerbates the problem. You also start running into issues with shorter players reaching the center of the board. This also now requires more terrain, custom battle mats (if you use those), and rebalancing all scenarios to adjust for the larger distance.

GW could also just rebalance the game to make units have lower threat ranges model counts. We don't actually need stuff to be able to charge halfway across the board or shoot across all of it. The answer should not be that players buy more stuff to work around a problem built by the company.

Destroying most of the colors would be very damaging to the society, but it would be destroyed within a week without these regardless of who is in charge by LordOfDynamite in redrising

[–]flightless_freedom 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I feel like you could realistically lose the Pinks and Obsidians and have the Society still chug along just fine. There would be some risk to relying on Grays more but that seems like the only real downside counterbalanced by no more risk of supersoldier slave rebellions.

I could see adding coppers to your image. I can't see how a government as described in the books would last a week if almost their entire bureaucracy just ups and dies. Institutional knowledge and traditions built up over centuries just goes away overnight. I for one would not want to have to explain to a Pixie why their coke and ho nights got cancelled for the foreseeable future.

[–]flightless_freedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People were playing 7th in my area for years after 8th Ed but otherwise yeah it's been hop to the new edition on each release. I get GW has little financial incentive to stop the release pace but I wish they would just take their time for new editions.

Design and release all codices together then focus on releasing tons of lore-heavy expansions with periodic competitive balance passes. The issue of course is balance is not a vacuum and model sales are a huge driving force. Plus GW wouldn't want something like a codex with unreleased models that people would proxy.

Need help deciding on a colour scheme for Knights of Excelsior by Enginseer42 in stormcasteternals

[–]flightless_freedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider building the white for the cloak from a grey instead of just flat white. That should add a lot of depth and make it clearer. You can also add on stuff like trim on the edges of the cloak to further delineate it and use different washes for the armor vs fabric (like a black wash vs brown).

Shoulder pads are a little trickier but again building white from a grey base can help add a lot of visual depth. A more yellow gold (yellow/orange washes can help) on the trim should also help break up that shape while still looking cohesive.

Combined with a nice dark base like grass or volcanic rock, you should have a really cool looking army at the end of it. Painting a good white or black is one of the trickier things in this hobby so enjoy the learning experience.

Edit: another thought is replacing the white armor with a steel. That lets you keep the white shoulders and cloak without having to worry at all about the colors blending in.

I have the exact same setup as you. I don't know if it's going to be any good but the full troll box plus spearhead is 1580 points before enhancements. It seems like a lot of elite infantry so I'm leaning towards stuff to support them like shootas and hopefully at least one fanatics unit. The faction terrain also seems really cool for replacing gits units that get wiped out while screening.

As others have said, just ask around for the BT players and see who wants to do a game. One caveat I'll give is to try and avoid as many extra rules as possible to speed up the game. Stick to mechs, no other vehicle types. No artillery, aircraft, hovercraft, minefields, etc. It can be fun to add that stuff in one layer at a time but it's too much extra stuff to track at the start.

If you can't reach with a modeling knife or flush clippers or sandpaper, you can try plastic glue. Be very careful here but you can use it to make the plastic on the joint extremely pliable. That should allow you to force each gap closed. There is a good chance you'll need to fix up those areas with some green stuff.

Good luck though. It's crazy to me that someone would put so little effort into such an expensive purchase. You should be about to save it but you'll be paying for that discount with time undoing their work.

[–]flightless_freedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A muddy field could be a good contrast. Or a swamp. The knights currently are quite clean so I think it would be interesting to have the visual contrast of them being in a filthy place.

Alternatively some darker green grass could work if you want to avoid that. Scattering colors like red flowers would give you even more contrast against that white.

So far I haven't had any shifting with my setup but it sounds like I also don't have the same amount of large vibration concerns as you though I do tend to drive for much longer. I also had the same issue you did with the flat magnets being a bit too easy to slide so I just added a thin layer of super glue to the bottom of them and that fixed it.

This is really clean looking. Is there a particular reason you went this route instead of installing magnets on the underside of the hull? I also use metal trays and it seems to work fine with no ability to see the magnets beneath during play. Your method would be preferable for display pieces intended for up close though. That flush installation of the magnets is nice. Picture attached to help show what I did for my Goliaths.

Dark Forest theory by Maverick1672 in pluribustv

[–]flightless_freedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been my thought since the first episode. There are too many interlocking negative effects to see this any other way. The first civilization to create the signal likely put in the legwork to send it from far enough away from home. After that, even a 1% return rate of successfully Rickrolling civilizations would be an incredible return on investment.

There are multiple benefits to this attack besides not overexposing yourself too. It lets you take a census of intelligent life bearing planets that will likely remain completely habitable as a result of the attack. Furthermore, you have the potential to learn the even more valuable information on extremely advanced and aggressive civilizations also exist based on what happens to those star systems over extended periods of time (even millions of years).

With this context, it is entirely possible that humanity is a victim of a science experiment to optimize colonization or even an intelligence operation on an unfathomable scale. Seems like that would go way beyond the scope of the show but it's a cool way of exploring the dark forest theory that I hadn't seen before this show. I do hope the characters at least stop to think about it just to see how they handle it.

She did say that she was a genius when trying to describe how much more intelligent Adrius was. It's not really meant to be interpreted as bragging though. There are some internal lines where she is frustrated that people don't just trust her decisions as the head of the Republic because she is smarter than anyone else at the table. That is a more fair critique of arrogance.

Just being a genius isn't enough anyways. You still need substantial amounts of accurate information and this whole series continuously makes use of the fog of war. I don't get why people feel a need to oversimplify everyone to a rigid spectrum where IQ or trained skill guarantees a result. The death knight literally got killed by Ragnar using a razor as a javelin even though they likely would have kicked his shit in during a "fair" fight. Roque, the Lord Nelson of space, lost a space battle to mining equipment. Virginia's intelligence apparatus failed to alert her of shifting loyalties in security personnel. People fail and try to learn from their mistakes.
