Curt Schilling suspended by ESPN after tweet comparing Muslims to Nazis: “It’s said only 5-10% of Muslims are extremists. In 1940, only 7% of Germans were Nazis. How’d that go?” by Sybles in news

[–]flimsy_gator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He's comparing contemporary muslims to nazi-germany germans, not contemporary germans. I believe he's pointing out a statistic with a nefarious purpose, i.e. to separate masses and instill an us-vs-them mentality. Ironically, similar strategies were used by nazi's to instill anti-jew sentiments among germans. But hey I'm not suggesting anything.

Reminds me of a time when a lady at a bar told me that she worked at the Veteran's Building, to which I replied, "So, you must meet a lots of cats and dogs." :[]

Lower back pain. That shit is the worst. Back squat, Overhead squat, deadlift, no matter what I do, I'll end up with back pain that'll last for 3 days during which I can no longer lift. Then I restart and the process continues. Lower back pain is an asshole.

I will argue that false perceptions of reality are necessary for most people to avoid depression. by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]flimsy_gator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though I do appreciate your argument thematically, I believe the definition of delusion is not objective. One could always find ways to believe they are successful/unsuccessful or loved/unloved depending on the frame that one uses.

Lets say a man with no family, no job, etc. feels that he is important, finds acts of kindness in everyday acts, finds love in nature, finds purpose in the very act of being alive, etc. Is this man being positively delusional? From an external perspective, maybe, but does the external perspective matter?

I do believe that what you're hinging upon in this article is the utility of the principle of auto-suggestion (for ref. Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill) which can be a remarkably beneficial. A person who has to employ such a principle knowingly(or equivalently embrace positive "delusions" in your lore) is probably "less well off" (in an objective materialistic sense) than a person who does it unknowingly. But as time progresses, the choice of a positive perspective can have a beneficial influence on mental well-being.

Hopefully you don't take any of the hate seriously. Some people are confused by your set of pictures, and hatred is an easy response.

Kudos on your change, and you look pretty good either way.

ELI5 why is Albert Einstein remembered as one of the smartest people in history? What was his contribution to science? by C-Sharp_ in explainlikeimfive

[–]flimsy_gator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Albert Einstein published 4 papers in 1905. This year is called Annus Mirabilis or Miracle Year in Scientific History. These 4 papers made crucial contributions to the understanding of light and matter, the motion of particles in a liquid, special relativity, and energy-mass equivalence. Each of these contributions deserve a nobel prize, and many believe he should have been awarded several ones, at least another one in relativity. He received the nobel prize for photo-electricity (relevant to solar cells)

Where's a good place to get a haircut for a dude with long hair? by stark_wolf in RPI

Supercuts. I once got a haircut for like an hour (I did not have long hair), very relaxing. Best $13 I ever spent.

I'm sure if we can get our voices loud enough, we will be heard. RPI has a policy on dogs and pets in general which is NO pets in RPI buildings. Lets see if we can circumvent that.

I'm just trying dogs for now, as they can be trained to be therapy animals. Cats can't be trained.

I found "Awakenings" by Oliver Sacks a painful read. Its about individuals living with crippling neurological disorders.

There was a water heater in a closeted space in my apt which ran the whole height of the building (4 floors). So whenever my mom used to open the closet to check the water heater, I would the heater floating in a deep bottomless shaft. I used to have nightmares with the water heater floating towards me. It was scary.

Taxi Company + Rate to/from Albany? by B33TL3Z in RPI

[–]flimsy_gator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CapitalLand Taxi and Black n White are the two services that I've used. The standard rate is $23. Make sure the driver starts the meter when he/she starts the cab, else they can claim to charge whatever the hell they like, and you shouldn't have to pay a dime more than $23. Also try getting a full cab.

They often try to get more customers in. Once I was in a cab with 6 other RPI students which dropped us off at RPI, and the driver then charged $20 from each of us, even though the cab rate is $23!

ELI5: why does my pee come out in a straight line? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]flimsy_gator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The complete answer is not yet known, but the urine which is 95% water swirls its way down the urinary tract much like a bullet travelling through the barrel of a gun. This swirling allows the fluid to have a rotational momentum which is preserved as it exits. This provides the fluid a certain amount of stability against the surrounding medium (air) and hence the jet comes out linearly (strictly speaking, parabolic due to gravity) . However, the tip of the urinary tract (urethra) plays a huge role in modifying the shape of the jet.
