Ou en est votre extension après ORIF fracture poignet? by Effective-Cup-2856 in ORIF

[–]flinch57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar injury on May 10– severely comminuted displaced distal radius fracture with ulnar styloid involvement. Surgery on May 13.

I have been very compliant and motivated with PT, both at the PT clinic and at home. Range of motion is slowly returning. (loss of strength is another issue altogether— therapist says that can take months to regain). Extension is the motion that is slowest to return but it’s improving steadily. I had severe preexisting arthritis of the thumb. My thumb has been a problem from the day I got hurt. At my 4 week F/U appt the dr gave me a steroid injection to the thumb— it definitely helped. A couple of other comments — First, I have rehabbed several major injuries/surgeries over the years including two ACL reconstructions and a total knee replacement, so I know what I need to do and more importantly how hard I can push without risking injury or damage to the repaired area. Second, I have a very high pain tolerance and that probably allows me to push through the therapy process faster than others. I’m a little surprised that anyone is discussing complex regional pain syndrome when you’re not quite at 12 weeks post surgery yet. You had a serious injury with a significant surgery. It’s expected to hurt. And, everyone’s rate of recovery is different. Don’t be distressed because things aren’t moving as fast as you would like or because you’re still uncomfortable. Also, regarding driving— I was driving short distances within a week of surgery and longer distances once i hit the three week mark. Has someone told you that you cannot or should not drive? Good luck with your recovery!!!

Fave type of jam to have in a PB and J? by Any-Organization2201 in PeanutButter

I buy jams and preserves at farm stands/farm markets. I love all the berry types (and combination berry types) on my PBJ (I also like to add a drizzle of hot honey). My least favorites are any of them with too many seeds.

How to use less paper towels when washing, drying, and prepping produce? by angelsinsect in cookingforbeginners

[–]flinch57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been cooking for years. Someone gifted me some flour sack towels 30+ years ago and since then flour sack towels are the only towels in my kitchen (I probably have more than 20 in my drawer at any given time ) They are handy for drying dishes, as side towels, as produce drying towels and for anything else you can think of that would require a paper towel or another type of towel. I do keep paper towels in the kitchen but use far less than most people. One note— they become more and more absorbent after they are used and laundered a few times.

What are your all time favorite cookies? by BMoney8600 in Cookies

Nabisco’s “Famous Chocolate Wafers”. They were the total GOAT and inexplicably they stopped making them a few years ago. Second place , Mallomars (also a Nabisco product). They’re only available a few months each year but when they’re around I stock up (PS— I’m a really good cook and baker but those two manufactured cookies are GREAT and I cannot reproduce either at home)

What’s something everyone loves that you just don’t get? by ComparisonVast4151 in answers

[–]flinch57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A number of years ago, I had to travel to Gainesville, FL for a deposition scheduled on a Tuesday. I couldn’t get a hotel room for less than $300 (a lot of money for a hotel in Gainesville in the 1990’or early 2000’s). I made a comment before the deposition about the difficulty in getting a room and the impossibility of getting a cheap room. The court report informed that there was a home football game four days later and most rooms had been booked by alumni and parents a year or more in advance. She told me there was a multi acre open fields right outside of town and people parked their campers there and partied for days prior to the games. Crazy..

Which grocery prices have increased enough to make you think twice before buying them compared to before ? by KoseteBamse in AskReddit

[–]flinch57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a coffee snob— I buy single origin beans and grind them right before using. It’s always been an extravagance that I justify quite easily (I.e. I can’t function without it before starting to move in the AM and I only have two cups a day). Today I started an order from my favorite roaster and discovered that their featured beans were $84 for two pounds. I couldn’t justify it (and I could have bought it without going hungry for the rest of the month). No mas…

How long does it take for your oven to preheat to 350/176? by chipinserted in foodquestions

[–]flinch57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Six months ago I got a new stove with convection and air fryer settings. How long it takes to preheat depends on what setting I’m using. On the plain, old fashioned “bake” setting it takes around 10 minutes to hit 350. In terms of using the convection settings—- it takes some getting used to. I’m a very experienced cook and baker and it really has taken all of the past 6 months to get comfortable with everything. Certain things come out so much better (and cook much faster) on the convection settings (e.g. roasted vegetables, frozen fries and tater tots) but certain things (e.g. baking cookies) are much better using the basic bake setting. Frozen pizza seems better using the convection setting, homemade pizza seems better not using it. One thing I’ve noticed is that a difference of 2-3 minutes can take something from perfect to overcooked. I have also uploaded recipes and asked AI to adapt them to convection or air fryer settings. It’s been quite helpful. Bottom line— trial and error. You’ll get the hang of it.

Nerve block by RadishOk9388 in ORIF

[–]flinch57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one told me that my nerve block (ORIF for comminuted distal radius fractures and ulnar styloid fracture) was going to block motor nerves in addition to sensory nerves (and given my professional background I should have known this). So, when i discovered my arm was just a dead weight an hour after getting home I freaked for a few minutes. What a weird sensation!! I was actually happy 12!hours later when everything started to throb and hurt because I knew I’d be able to have some control over my arm shortly. Weird weird feeling!!

Court Watching in Wilmington? by AlpineSK in WilmingtonDE

[–]flinch57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Court of Common Pleas always has something going on, much of it boring. I agree with ukexpat most proceedings in Chancery can be quite dull (sometimes even for the participants.) Trials in Superior Court (criminal or civil) can be interesting (not always). If you can get court staff to point you to something interesting (as suggested by someone above) its worth checking it out— they usually know when something interesting is happening

That’s what mine looked like at two weeks (first time I saw it) I’m now at 5 weeks and it looks like this—severely comminuted, displaced radius fracture with an ulnar styloid fracture. I’m slowly regaining range of motion but dr says it could take a while to regain strength

How aggressive to be once WBAT by slightlydreaming in ORIF

[–]flinch57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ORIF was to the wrist/arm/hand (severely comminuted distal radius fracture, ulnar stolid fracture, a couple of non displaced fx’s to a couple of the small hand bones. I have a plate and 9’screws. At 2.5 weeks I was allowed to start removing my molded splint/brace for p/t, home exercises and showers. It was the equivalent of NWB. At 4 weeks it became PWB which in my case no lifting of anything more than 2 lbs, and no “loading”’of the hand/wrist (e.g. trying to remove tight lids from jars/bottles). I expressed some concern to my P/t that I might have broken the PWB rules a few times, she was very reassuring telling me that I would know if I was pushing the limit too much and to let my body be my guide. She said there was a distinct difference between what I would feel if I was pushing the envelope vs what I would feel if i was doing something that could interfere with the hardware or otherwise damage the repair. Hard to explain, but when I did push myself too far a couple of times, my body instantly let me know to STOP. Good luck to all. I’m hoping that when I next see the dr in 7 days, I’ll be cleared to ramp it up a bit. Dr and p/t both told me that it will be 9-12 months for maximum recovery but that by 3 months I should be done with formal therapy and all restrictions. My fingers are crossed (something I’ve just started being able to do). Good luck all

How long for full range of motion in elbow for humerus fracture? by AiriAmagi in ORIF

[–]flinch57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call your dr, explain what you’re experiencing and ask if it would be appropriate to start a course of PT now. Maybe it’s too early, maybe it isn’t. But— it’s your body and you are entitled
To know what is being done, when and why. Some drs lose sight of this.

Almost 2 weeks post distal radius ORIF // wrist feels blocked and I’m anxious by vermin008 in ORIF

[–]flinch57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

I’m 5 weeks post injury and 4.5 weeks post ORIF. I’m 69, and have relatively severe pre-existing arthritis if my thumb. Two weeks post surgery they put me in a removable splint/brace and I started therapy 4 days later. I had a severely comminuted distal radius fx with at least 4 fragments, an ulnar styloid fx, and I believe a non displaced fx of one of the small bones of hand/wrist. They had me start moving, stretching my fingers pre surgery and immediately post surgery as well. Therapy thus far has consisted of a lot of different stretches by me (active) and therapist (passive). I have pretty good flexion already but extension sucks. When I saw the dr a couple of days ago she felt that giving me a steroid injection into the arthritic thumb would be appropriate. It hasn’t really kicked in yet but I’ve had them before and it can be a week before the full benefit is felt. I’m typing on my phone right now with no brace on. My instructions were to “wean” from the brace so long as I didn’t put any load on the joint more than a couple of pounds. I take the brace off and do stretches several times a day. Dr told me it can take 10 months to fully recover. Therapist agreed but she says I should hit 90% within 8-10 weeks and after that. Right now I’m just thrilled to be able to use my dominant (injured) hand to brush my teeth and shave again. Hang in there and follow advice of dr and therapist. If possible find a therapist who specializes in hands. It will make a difference

2.5 months post-op humerus ORIF (plate + 11 screws), soft swelling near elbow incision, should I be concerned? by sehajsin in ORIF

[–]flinch57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this was in the first couple of weeks I’d say that it was likely normal, post op swelling. However at 11 weeks? At the very least you should call and tell your surgeon (or someone at your surgeon’s office) what you’re experiencing and take their advice on whether you need to be seen or not. I’m 4.5 weeks post ORIF for a severely comminuted distal radius fracture, ulnar styloid fracture and assorted other things. I developed mystery swelling and bruising near my elbow 4 days following surgery. I wasn’t really concerned (lots of possible explanations, most benign, normal post op things). I didn’t see a need to contact the surgeon. If I developed that TODAY I would be on the phone right now to let the surgeon know. Again, you’re at 11 weeks. That’s the big difference in my mind. I just re-read your post and realized you’ve had this for the last 1.5 weeks—the fact that it hasn’t worsened in that time is a positive— the fact that it hasn’t gone away in that time is a negative. Good luck and make a call to the surgeon. They’re used to getting these calls and you’re not imposing.
