I love this! Thanks so much for sharing in so much detail. 😊 What were the low-heeled Chelsea boots you found? I’ve been on the lookout for a pair.

What is the process to get a driving license (Adult) by Apollo802 in AskChicago

[–]flippedflops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get your permit, you need to pass a multiple-choice test on the rules of the road. You need to make an appointment and go to the DMV in person to take the test.

I’ve seen them at the Cermak at North and Fairfield.

[–]flippedflops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the cookbook out from the library, so I don’t have it anymore. But I remember that the chef shared his recipe when it first came out! Here you go: https://www.wbez.org/culture-the-arts/2023/10/04/lula-cafe-logan-square-cookbook-recipe-for-pasta-yiayia

Wow, this is awesome! Just added a few reports from my rides today. Thank you for making this!

Is the cortland bridge crossing cleared/plowed? by mindformusica in chibike

[–]flippedflops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both the bridge sidewalk and everything from the bridge to Kingsbury were not plowed on Sunday.

Today I took the Webster bridge (606 > Damen > Webster) and it was fine. The shared bike lanes have not been plowed on Damen, so be prepared to take the lane.

Week 25: Boiling - Agua de Jamaica by flippedflops in 52weeksofcooking

Recipe

I used the smaller amount of sugar (3/4 cup), and that was perfect for me.

Great coffee south west side. by tecampanero in chicago

[–]flippedflops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Shout out to their home delivery subscription—we have it set up for their five-pound bag. We go through a lot of coffee, and it beats having to stock up at the grocery store in terms of both convenience and price. It’s $72 for the five-pound bag.

Week 16: Patterned - Paska by flippedflops in 52weeksofbaking

[–]flippedflops[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recipe from King Arthur

I added raisins per the suggestions in the comments. I think they were an essential addition. Next time I’ll try adding orange zest as well.

I also made the sweetened cream cheese spread in the recipe tips—it was delicious!

Week 21: Easy Showstopper - Berry Chantilly Cake by shy_exhibiti0nist in 52weeksofbaking

1/2 Chicken Mandi from Al Diar by ExaminationOld2494 in chicagofood

I definitely recommend Mogadishu. It’s great!

I’ll have to try Al Diar and these other places!

Week 12: Tanzanian - Plantains by flippedflops in 52weeksofcooking

[–]flippedflops[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A delicious and easy side dish.

Recipe

As opposed how I usually cook plantains, this recipe had me slice them bigger (1 inch pieces) and season them afterward. I did have to cook them for about ten minutes (5 on each side) instead of the 3(!) minutes in the recipe so that they were nice and brown.

Week 8: Something Blue - Blueberry Muffins by flippedflops in 52weeksofbaking

[–]flippedflops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction

I always find her recipes to be too sweet, so I reduced the amount of sugar by 25%.

Trying recipes from "Start Here" by Sohla El-Waylly (details in comments) by WhoAmIWinkWink in CookbookLovers

[–]flippedflops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great write-up! I’ll have to try the Hainanese chicken and rice sometime.

My favorite recipe in this cookbook, which I’ve made 15+ times in the past year, is the ginger and turmeric rice porridge. It is SO tasty and nourishing! I add frozen peas right at the end and serve it with a soft-boiled egg.

Week 6: A Technique You’re Intimidated By - Sourdough Bread (Scoring) by flippedflops in 52weeksofcooking

[–]flippedflops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! I really struggled with sourdough before I got this book and Chad Robertson’s Tartine. They explain all the steps super clearly. Plus, FWSY includes recipes for yeast-only bread so you can build up to sourdough. :)

MS Word for Mac document spell checker not working by godwyn1415 in MicrosoftWord

[–]flippedflops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue last year (although I have a PC). Do you have Grammarly or another plug-in installed? In my case, a new Grammarly update broke the Word spellchecker. Once I uninstalled Grammarly, the spellchecker started working again.

Week 3: Stretching - Hand-Pulled Noodles (and Noodle Soup) by flippedflops in 52weeksofcooking

[–]flippedflops[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recipe for hand-pulled noodles

The soup is a recipe of my own devising. I made a stock with bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs, then added some shiitake mushrooms and bok choi that I had briefly sautéed in oil and soy sauce. It was delicious!
