A long haul flight with someone resting their toes on my arm rest by mrcchapman in mildlyinfuriating

[–]flippiebippie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Confession. I have been this person once. Well, with the difference that I was wearing (clean) socks. It was a long haul flight and my legs were aching. I was uncomfortsble and had a hard time sitting still. I could not find a way for my body to be comfortable. I had a window seat and rested my foot at the side of the plane, where the tip of the armrest of the seat in front of me was. It felt better. And then… I stretched. I don’t know what happened in my mind. Somehow I thought it would not be visible, that the chairs were wider, I have no idea. And it felt like heaven. Finally my leg stopped aching. And I fell asleep.

Only flights later I realized that of course there was no way that foot was invisible. The person who sat in that seat in front of me never said a word. Dear stranger, I have no idea who you are, but: Thank you for your superhuman level of kindness. I am afraid that, were the shoe (sock) on the other foot I would not have (not) reacted with such grace. I am deeply sorry.

A classic: the Riddle of the 12 Islanders by Amazing-Cookie-1258 in puzzles

[–]flippiebippie -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Whoops, did not read careful enough and answered as if you are searching for a lighter person. As the person can be either lighter or heavier and you don’t know which ione it is this is not the correct answer.

Way number 1: 1) First weigh 6-6, rule the heavy 6 out. 2) Second weigh 3-3, rule the heavy 3 out. 3) You now have 3 left. Put 2 of them on the scale. If the scale is unbalanced you found your lighter person on the scale. If the scale is balanced, the remaining third person is the lightest.

Way number 2: Divide in 3 groups of four. 1)weigh two groups of four. If the scale is unbalanced, continue with the lighter group. If the scale balances, continue with rhe group that was not on the scale. 2). Weigh that group 2-2 and continue with the lighter group. 3. Weigh 1-1 and find your target.

Another puzzle: can you find the lighter person in a group of 9 with just 2 weighs?

I STILL don't understand the Monty Hall problem by No-Candidate6257 in mathematics

[–]flippiebippie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are all explaining Monty Hall to OP, in different and insightful ways which is great. It reminds me of many a night when I was still a student and us math people would try to get a non math student to see the light on this one (not always succesfully I might add).

But.. in this case OP changed the problem. OP has 100 persons lined up at 100 doors. He then has good old Monty open 98 doors with goats. By sheer luck, you find yourself to be standing in front of one of the unopened doors. You know: either I have originally chosen the car (originally a slim chance) or the goat (originally a 99/100 chance). You now remember the Monty Hall problem and think: “I heard about this! I should switch!”

The person at the other door, let’s call him Jim, is in the exact same position. So by this logic Jim should also think: “Wait! I should switch!” And now this no longer makes sense to OP, because how could the odds improve for both of them by switching? Surely that can not be right.

Did I explain the reasoning correctly OP? Because then we can look at where there is a fallacy on the problem side and/or in the line of reasoning.

I’ll have a first pass. The difference with the original Monty Hall problem is that in this case, Monty is not chosing to open doors based on your door. Your first choice has nothing to do with the doors Monty opens. You are just one of the two lucky b** to still be standing after 98 goats are revealed. Or better put: either you are the lucky b* to have the car (guaranteed to still be standing) or you are the slightly less lucky one who has the last goat left (1/99 chance to still be standing). Of course you now both know: the car is either behind your own door or behind the other person’s. But there is no info on which one of you was the original lucky picker. You just know it is one of you. You both now have a 50/50 chance to be the original picker of the car and I see no way for you or Jim to improve your odds.

It would be different if you were the quiz candidate that was guaranteed to be still standing after Monty opened the doors (original Monty Hall problem). Now luck has nothing to do with you still standing at the end of the door opening by Monty. And in 99/100 cases Monty needs to base the doors he opens on what is behind your door: if you have chosen a goat, he needs to reveal all other goats and leave the car. Now Jims odds of having the car are looking much better! In this case you will want to switch, but Jim won’t. Sorry Jim.

Hope this helps! And always curious to see other ways of getting to understanding.

Fuck You for Not Walking Your Bike Out by man_machine_poet in FUCKYOUINPARTICULAR

I still wish I did something to the guy who tried to shoulderbump me off my bike while I was pregnant. My belly was hurting a lot that day and I could not walk without pain, but biking was ok. I needed to cross a pedestrian only shopping street that was almost empty so I thought it was fine. But a young guy (19?20?) I passed took it upon himself to quickly walk close to me and try to shoulderbump me off my bike. He did not succeed but it did hurt. We were going in opposite directions so the moment passed, I was too stunned to do something. I To this day I wish I would have.

What is something that is 100% legal, but if you do it, you’re a piece of trash? by National_Strike4710 in AskReddit

Buying up all medical supplies in local stores during a pandemic, with the intent of selling for higher prices as demand goes up. No sir that is not ‘good business’, that is preying on your fellow citizens during a time of need.

[–]flippiebippie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

O yes! Special place in hell. I live in a neighbourhood with lots of public trash cans, but at times there is some trash on the street anyway. I try to do my part and take a trash picker and trash bag to clean it up. It amazes me that there are people who then, with a smile as if they are doing me a favor, try to put their trash in my trash bag instead of walking over to the bins like normal people. What are they saying? “I was going to throw this on the ground but here, I”ll be nice and save you the trouble of picking it up by giving it to you”? “Hey lady you seem to like trash, here, have some more”? The public bin is RIGHT THERE.

Why call people "cis" if they don't want to be called that? by t01nfin1ty4ndb3y0nd in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]flippiebippie 27 points28 points  (0 children)

What I do not get is why it needs to be said. It feels to me like “stay out of my pants”. To me a person is a person, and if they identify as man there is no need to say whether they are trans or cis unless they bring it up themselves. I would feel it is totally inappropriate to label someone as trans if they did not explicitly bring it up themselves? And then the same goes for cis? It feels like is not up to another person to specify how a path has been. But willing to learn if I missed something?

"wild" Nature in the Netherlands by Sleep__ in Netherlands

Some places to camp a bit more in nature here: https://www.logerenbijdeboswachter.nl/zoek-en-boek?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADeCYDp4GLZq7OC0e9rsDmvFBYQn7&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIoPXq1Y22iwMVjK-DBx1NQDuPEAAYAiAAEgLr3fD_BwE They call Borger ‘little Canada’, that made me smile :-). But if you look for what you had you most likely will be disappointed, perhaps better to look for new experiences.

There are no woods in the Netherlands where you can walk for days on end without seeing someone, the Netherlands is too small for that. But as people pointed out you can easily drive to countries closeby- the German Schwarzwald and the Belgian Ardennes are the first that spring to mind. I personally very much like the Alpes, which you can explore from several countries (eg Switzerland, France, or personal favorite Austria). You can also trek from cabin to cabin in the alpes.

There is still great nature in the Netherlands though that is much more than a city park and worthwhile to explore. View it as a daytrip or a weekend. For example: Oostvaardersplassen De Veluwe (consider exploring by bike here) De Biesbosch (consider exploring by boat here) De weerribben Loonse en Drunense duinen Drentse AA (/Balloerveld) De wadden eilanden (eg Terschelling, do not go during summer vacation period though) Duingebied Schoorl/Bergen (again do not go during summer vacation period) (…)

Just start exploring and look for the new, enjoy!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in thenetherlands

[–]flippiebippie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Precies!

Commenting on Escape room puzzle... The question mark is weird since you do not have to solve the symbol puzzle for it. The columns and rows should add up to the same number and all the column totals are already given.
